Roster moves

The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

  • Reinstated from the 15-day injured list: RHP Paul Sewald (left oblique strain)
  • After Sunday’s game optioned to Triple-A Reno: RHP Scott McGough

Definitely good to have Sewald back, and hopefully he can bring the same stabilizing influence to the Arizona bullpen, as he did after his arrival from Seattle last season. Interesting to see the team has apparently had enough of McGough: I’m guessing he accepted an assignment to Triple-A, though I don’t know the exact details of his contract. However, it’s not all good news, with the move which was NOT made also of note. We were expecting Alek Thomas to return as well, but he apparently had a setback after running the bases over the weekend, and has instead gone back to Phoenix for further evaluation and an MRI.

However, also good to see Zac Gallen back, having last pitched on April 26th. The team was apparently erring on the side of caution after he experienced a hamstring tweak during that start. But if the team is going to make its way back up through the pack and into contention, then having a fit, productive Gallen is going to be a big part, especially without Merrill Kelly in the rotation.
