Sindone

Il Volto Santo di Lucca, custodito nella Cattedrale di San Martino, fino circa un anno fa, era uno dei tanti crocifissi di cui è costellata l’intera Europa, ma dal giugno 2020 si è potuto accertare sia la più antica scultura lignea dell’occidente.

Nei testi di alcuni sindonologi si trova citata una frase attribuita a un autore che viene definito come uno specialista del radiocarbonio: Michaël Winter. La frase viene usata con l'intenzione di screditare l'attendibilità dei test di datazione. Le affermazioni dei sindonologi sono false a diversi livelli.

According to the Gospels, Jesus suffered the flagellation before his crucifixion. The texts do not clarify the form and materials of the scourge that was utilized. Since the beginnings of the modern era, several commentators have speculated about the scourge's form, on the basis of the Greek-Roman literary evidence and with reference to flagellation relics. In the last few centuries, scholars have provided new indications that are exemplified in great dictionaries and encyclopedic works of Greek-Roman archaeology and antiquities, as well as in the consultation works available to biblical scholars. However, a close re-examination of the whole evidence compels us to dismiss nearly all data and to conclude that we know almost nothing about the materials and form of the scourge used at Jesus' time.

La fede è storia, e, in virtù di ciò, richiede che nei suoi confronti ci si rivolga con un approccio critico-scientifico.
Tuttavia la stessa fede rivela come tale appressamento risulti insufficiente e limitato, ovvero da compensare e corroborare, in quanto questa è considerazione del Signore Gesù Cristo a partire dalla sua comunione col Padre e con lo Spirito.

Il volume è il frutto di una serie di conferenze multidisciplinari tenutesi nel corso dell’anno 2018–2019 presso la Pontificia Facoltà Teologica dell’Italia Meridionale, Sezione San Tommaso d’Aquino e incentrate sul tema “Il volto di Gesù rivelatore del Padre”. Il mistero cristiano dell’incarnazione offre l’opportunità di poter contemplare in qualche modo direttamente Dio: una possibilità “rivoluzionaria” che sbaraglia i tentativi intellettuali, mistici e misterici di entrare in contatto con il divino che hanno caratterizzato tutte le religioni. Gli studi che rendono ricco e interessante il volume ben rappresentano la poliedricità di accostamenti possibili al mistero di Gesù.

The volume is the result of a series of multidisciplinary conferences held during the year 2018-2019 at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy, St. Thomas Aquinas Section, and focused on the theme "The face of Jesus reveals the Father". The Christian mystery of the Incarnation offers the opportunity to contemplate in some way God directly: a "revolutionary" possibility that defeats the intellectual, mystical and mysteric attempts to get in touch with the divine that have characterized all religions. The studies that make the volume rich and interesting well represent the versatility of possible approaches to the mystery of Jesus.

L’elaborato in questione parte da un’idea alquanto ardita: porre a raffronto, mantenendo sempre come fondale l’osservazione della Sindone, le risurrezioni presenti nel Nuovo Testamento, con la Risurrezione per antonomasia, ovvero quella di Gesù.

Dopo aver trasferito la propria capitale da Chambéry a Torino nell’anno 1563, «Era mente del duca di Savoia Emanuele Filiberto, ricuperati suoi stati […], di avere presso di sè la Sindone […] che ordinariamente lo teneva in Ciamberì». A Chambéry, infatti, «non pareva molto sicuro [il sacro Sindone] per li continui tumulti delli Hugonotti ne paesi vicini della Francia, et Delfinato».

When initiating a conversation with someone about the Shroud of Turin, often I discover the person knows little if anything about it.  This is especially true among Protestants.  Many of those who do know something have dismissed it as a fake due to the widely published results of a radiocarbon experiment in 1988 which dated the cloth to be medieval (1290-1360 AD).  However, due to evidence that has surfaced from forensic science and historical research over the past forty years, more and more people are arriving at a spectacularly different conclusion.  This paper will present evidence for authenticity.  It will explain why the Shroud of Turin is most likely the actual burial cloth that once covered the corpse of Jesus and, remarkably, why the cloth provides us with visual, physical evidence for life after death!

Abstract

La somiglianza tra il volto sindonico e la maggior parte delle raffigurazioni di Cristo conosciute nell’arte, sia orientale che occidentale, è evidente e non può essere attribuita a un puro caso; deve essere il risultato di una dipendenza, mediata o immediata, di un’immagine dall’altra e di tutte da una fonte comune. Si possono individuare sulla Sindone parecchi elementi non regolari, difficilmente attribuibili alla fantasia degli artisti, che fanno capire come le antiche raffigurazioni del volto di Cristo dipendano dalla venerata reliquia.  È lecito pensare che nei primi tempi della Chiesa la Sindone sia stata tenuta nascosta per diversi motivi. In questo periodo per la raffigurazione di Cristo furono usati soltanto simboli o furono applicate alla figura di Cristo sembianze derivate da altre religioni. Dopo la vittoria del Cristianesimo, sancita da Costantino nel 313 con l’editto di Milano, cominciò a diffondersi un’immagine nuova del volto di Gesù, che viene caratterizzato dalla barba non troppo lunga, dai baffi, dal volto stretto, alto e maestoso, dai capelli lunghi, che cadono sulle spalle e talvolta mostrano una riga centrale che li divide. Numerose testimonianze, sia scritte che iconografiche, confermano che a Edessa (l’odierna Şanliurfa, nella Turchia sud-orientale) esisteva un’impronta lasciata da Gesù su una stoffa con il suo sudore e il suo sangue. Questo sacro telo, nascosto per secoli e ritrovato nel VI secolo, divenne il modello ispiratore per l’iconografia di Cristo. Tutte le leggende, le tradizioni, gli accenni all’esistenza di una tale immagine sono preziosi per ricostruire un itinerario della Sindone nei secoli oscuri che precedono la sua comparsa in Europa e comprendere come mai ci siano tanti riferimenti all’esistenza di un’immagine di Cristo su un panno.

The debate concerning the instrument that was used to hit the Man of the Shroud’s body during the flagellation is now strongest than ever. Several hypotheses are following one other: some scholars, after a careful analysis of the bloodstains on the Turin Shroud, could rebuild, with a good grade of certainty, the shape of this terrible torture tool. Other scholars hint at an example of flagrum that would have been found in the Roman town of Ercolano (Haerculanum), or to another one that would be preserved at the Diocletian Thermal Bath Museum, but those statements often lack of precise references.
A research of the effective historical evidences of this tool (including a survey through archaeological, linguistic, and artistic witnesses), conducted with the help of some of the main Cultural Institution of Lazio and Campania, seems to allow casting new light on this matter.
From the analysis of those data, it seems possible to conclude that the flagrum in the Roman era (and, to be more precise, in the 1st century) existed indeed, and it was a terrible torture tool.
The research aim is to open some new perspectives for the studies of a problem that does not involve only the Shroud, but several cultural disciplines like History, Archaeology, Linguistics and Iconography.

Critics and skeptics make a strong argument against the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin with this simple observation: The Biblical writers failed to mention such a marvelous treasure!  However, due to the threat of confiscation and destruction of the Shroud by enemies, a plausible inference can be made that early Church leaders would want to keep the Shroud’s existence a secret from outsiders.  This paper provides brief analyses of statements from within the New Testament that might be “veiled” or “cryptic” references to what we know today as the Shroud of Turin.  Six passages are especially strong candidates in that regard.  Elsewhere the author has written an extensive exegesis on each of those six passages.  This paper is intended to serve as an introduction to those Biblical texts, while also making mention of several additional, minor textual candidates.

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth bearing the front and back body images of what appears to be a crucified man. Although it is considered one of the archaeological objects most studied in history, nobody has been able to replicate the microscopic complexity of the chemical and physical characteristics of its faint images. After countless attempts, the inability to replicate the image on the Shroud prevents formulating a reliable hypothesis on the process of the image formation.
In this paper we summarize the state-of-the art of the scientific research on the Shroud, from the multidisciplinary STuRP analyses (1978) to the radiocarbon dating (1988), from biological clues to the linen irradiation experiments at the ENEA, till the illusory perception of low contrast stains on the Shroud.
As detailed in this paper, despite huge scientific efforts, the Shroud is still “a challenge to our intelligence”, a remarkable object whose scientific analyses lead to many clues, but any proof.

Nella seconda parte vengono identificati una serie di elementi figurativi specifici, tipici della Crocifissione. Da questa selezione viene costituita la struttura di un database che verrà popolato con un campione di opere  – Crocifissi e Crocifissioni – di un’area geografica circoscritta. Verranno quindi presentati gli elementi costitutivi della struttura del database, la ragione della scelta geografica, l’elenco dei luoghi e delle opere incluse, e l’analisi dei dati raccolti.

Dopo una introduzione elementare alla generazione e decadimento dell'isotopo C-14, commentiamo alcune ragioni per cui la radio-datazione tramite conteggio di C-14  di un tessuto di cui non si conosce la storia né le condizioni in cui è stato conservato e manipolato comporta un elevato rischio di ottenere una età sbagliata.
Cerchiamo inoltre di valutare l'affidabilità delle misure di radio-datazione della Sindone di Torino del 1988 alla luce di alcuni recenti risultati di analisi statistica robusta, i quali hanno evidenziato sia un gradiente spaziale monotono di età  (forse dovuto  alla presenza di un contaminante) sia la mancata datazione di uno dei lembi dati al laboratorio di Tucson, che è stata tenuta segreta per 22 anni, rivelando una importante inesattezza nell'articolo di Nature del 1989. Queste osservazioni gettano un'ombra sull'affidabilità della misura, e sull'etica scientifica di almeno uno dei tre laboratori che hanno effettuato la misura di radio-datazione della Sindone.

The publication of a considerable volume containing the Acts of two congresses which were held in Wien and Würzburg, about the images of Christ both of Eastern and Western origins, reopens the discussion regarding such images, especially the so-called acheiropoieta, that is "not made by human hands". A special mention goes to the Image of Camuliana, the Mandylion of Edessa, the Veronica, the Shroud of Turin and the Veil of Manoppello. Some studies are excellent, but once again the evidence is partially distorted by the fervent believers in the authenticity of the Shroud.

Based on an abundance of scientific and historical evidence that has surfaced in recent years, the author believes the Shroud of Turin is the genuine burial cloth that Joseph of Arimathea purchased and used to wrap the body of Jesus.  Peter and “the disciple whom Jesus loved” found the tomb empty of a corpse on Resurrection Day.  However, when they found the funeral linens, something about their appearance caused the disciple to “believe” (John 20.8).  The cloth was stained with blood and had been defiled by its contact with a corpse.  Why then wasn’t the Shroud viewed as “unclean,” discarded and buried?  Why did the early Church treasure this piece of linen and seek to safeguard it from opponents and enemies of the Faith?  How did they come to perceive this cloth?  What beliefs became attached to it?  In a former paper  the author attempted to show that the early Christians likely perceived the Shroud as being the miraculous “sign of Jonah” that Jesus promised.  In this paper he will seek to demonstrate that the early Christians also identified Jesus’ Shroud, typologically, with being a “tabernacle.”  The “sacred tent” (σκηνή) of the Shroud enabled Jesus to make the transition from His earthy existence into the Holy of Holies of the heavenly Sanctuary to present the sacrificial offering of His own blood.  Furthermore, again typologically, the Shroud was identified with His royal-priestly robe, having been consecrated by His sacrificial blood!  The earthly Shroud was a “type and shadow” of the heavenly robe!  With its miraculous image, the Shroud was viewed as being a link between the earthly and heavenly realities.

Shrouds have long held a special place among the sacred relics of Christendom. In the Middle Ages, shrouds, like holy relics, were the prize possessions of churches and cities.
Cloaked in mystery, these artifacts have long been objects of reverence and awe, as well as sources of debates, quarrels, thefts, and excommunications. Shrouds—so some claim—provide visible testimony to faith. One in particular has drawn the interest of scholars, clergy, and the public alike: the Shroud of Turin.
In The Shroud of Turin, Andrea Nicolotti chronicles the history of this famous cloth, including its circuitous journey from the French village of Lirey to its home in the Italian city of Turin, as well as the fantastical claims surrounding its origin and modern scientific efforts to prove or disprove its authenticity.
Full of intrigue and mystery,  The Shroud of Turin dismantles hypotheses that cannot survive the rigors of historical analysis. Nicolotti directly addresses the thorny problem of the authenticity of the relic and the difficult relationship between history, faith, and science.

In the Middle Ages, there was a great variety of shrouds venerated in different parts of the Christian world. The Sudarium of Oviedo, woven around the eighth century AD, is recorded in the sources as from the last quarter of the eleventh century and is one of the relics preserved in the cathedral of the city. Its existence can be considered one of the effects of the joint efforts that the clergy and the political power made to provide a historical and propagandistic legitimation to the supremacy of Oviedo’s bishopric. In the last fifty years, as a result of the powerful propaganda carried out by some exponents of a pseudo-science known as “syndonology”, the Sudarium of Oviedo enjoys a growing fame, especially in the media, and it is presented as if it were an authentic relic, that is, as the true shroud that wrapped the head of Jesus of Nazareth.

A couple of recently published papers imply that researchers should consider the possibility that the Shroud of Turin plays an important role in the exegetical, historical and scientific inquiry. This would promote theological and epistemological reflections based upon the purportedly unusual ontological features of the Shroud itself, such as the confirmatory evidence of its nonhuman origins. Moreover, some scientific findings would seem to exclude the possibility of the relic being an artifact. In this study, we propose a completely different approach, denying any possible documentary role of the Shroud in the fields of biblical exegesis and the history of early Christianity. In addition, I focus on the pseudoscientific unreliability of the products of the “sindonological” research programme.

Alcuni saggi recentemente pubblicati invitano gli studiosi a prendere in considerazione la possibilità che la Sindone di Torino possa svolgere un ruolo importante all’interno della ricerca esegetica, storica e scientifica. Ciò dovrebbe stimolare una riflessione epistemologica e teologica basata su supposte caratteristiche inconsuete della Sindone stessa, fra cui l’evidenza della sua origine non umana. Certe risultanze scientifiche, inoltre, parrebbero escludere la possibilità che la reliquia sia un artefatto. Nel presente studio si propone un approccio del tutto diverso, negando alla Sindone qualsiasi ruolo nell’ambito dell’esegesi biblica e della storia del cristianesimo antico. Infine si sottolinea l’inattendibilità pseudoscientifica dei prodotti della ricerca “sindonologica”.

Lo storico Andrea Nicolotti pretende di far piazza pulita di tutte le «leggende» sorte intorno al Sacro Lino di Torino: un falso bello e buono che va smascherato una volta per tutte usando le armi della ricerca storica. Peccato che tra quelle armi non ci dovrebbero essere alcune cose che invece Nicolotti usa a man bassa: sarcasmo e disprezzo per chi non la pensa come lui (i vituperati «sindonologi»), fonti e ricerche di segno opposto ignorate, incursioni avventate in campi lontani come quelli della scienza. Insomma, il classico «libro a tesi», ovviamente incensato dai maggiori quotidiani, che una nota studiosa della Sindone ha letto per «Storia in Rete».

What specifically was "the sign of Jonah" that we find Jesus promising in two of the Four Gospels? The interpretation and identification of that Sign has been debated and has been somewhat of a riddle. Even so, the three related passages do reveal identifying markers whereby the genuine Sign of Jonah should become evident. These markers should form a set of criteria so that the genuine Sign can be distinguished from false contenders. This paper will argue that, following the Ascension of Jesus, His burial cloth (bearing its extraordinary miraculous image) was the Father's witness, His gracious gift for every doubting Thomas, and was intended to be the Sign of Jonah for every ensuing generation. Next to love, the image on the Shroud is the supreme apologetic for the Church!

Nel buio dei secoli antichi, si accende qua e là per la Sindone qualche luce che illumina il suo travagliato percorso. Compito dello storico è cercare queste fiaccole e ricostruire, attraverso di esse, un percorso verosimile. Questo ci si aspetterebbe da Andrea Nicolotti, professore associato del Dipartimento di Studi Storici dell’Università degli Studi di Torino, che ha pubblicato un corposo volume (502 pagine) intitolato The Shroud of Turin – The History and Legends of the World’s Most Famous Relic (Baylor University Press 2019). L’opera è la versione inglese, ampliata e aggiornata, di Sindone – Storia e leggende di una reliquia controversa (Einaudi 2015, pp. 370). 
Il volume si presenta con un apparato notevole. Tutto fa pensare a un’opera di ampio respiro, completa, documentata e oggettiva. Chi ha già letto altri libri di Nicolotti conosce, però, la sua attitudine demolitrice: la sua interpretazione delle fonti è sempre contraria all’autenticità della Sindone ed è continuamente ripetuta la negazione di qualsiasi possibilità che la reliquia sia il lenzuolo funebre di Cristo. Egli si affanna a spegnere qualsiasi luce, affinché il buio sia totale. Nicolotti opera una sistematica esaltazione degli studiosi che ritengono falsa la Sindone, persone da lui presentate come affidabili, e una altrettanto sistematica denigrazione di chi la ritiene autentica, bollato come sindonologo che fa pseudoscienza. In realtà le sue critiche alle affermazioni esagerate sono giuste, ma lui respinge costantemente tutte le affermazioni favorevoli all’autenticità della Sindone e questo non è condivisibile.
Ci sono abbastanza ombre per chi non vuole ammettere che la Sindone provenga dal sepolcro di Gesù, è vero, ma c’è abbastanza luce per sostenere che abbia avvolto il suo corpo. La storia da sola non permette di far prevalere la luce, ma non stiamo discutendo di un oggetto non più esistente: il telo c’è ancora e le indagini scientifiche condotte su di esso propendono per la sua autenticità. Solo la celebre analisi radiocarbonica del 1988 sembrava andare in direzione opposta, ma la validità di quel test – come è ormai noto - è stata ampiamente smentita.
