When the autumn leaves are falling,
Gently falling, gently falling down,
One recalls the pleasant springtime,
When the leaves were green instead of brown;
Yet when birds and flowers desert us,
Made to leave when cold winds blow,
Then we see the dead leaves falling,
Gently falling, gently falling down.
Brown leaves are gently falling,
Falling, yes, falling down,
Floating so lightly,
Floating down, down, down;
Brown leaves fall lightly and gently,
Lightly and gently down,
Making the sweetest of music,
While they are floating down.
They are like the golded sunshine,
Tints of almost every hue each hast,
Far and wide the breezes take them,
Into every little nook they’re cast;
O I weep to see them scattered,
On the moldy ground to lie,
They are pearled with snows from heaven,
Gently falling, falling from the sky.
