I think I remember a scene in the X movie when Kamui jumped near a Coca Cola sign, and it was a so noticeable I am still sure it was product placement.

An odd case is Code Geass. It's pretty famous for it's Pizza Hut tie ins, but for the home release all the Pizza Hut logos were replaced.

I think Inuyasha was the first series I watched that prominently featured a spoofed brand. Always got a kick out of Kagome and her friends heading down to the local WacDnalds. You can't beat Space Dandy's galaxy-ruling Gogol Empire, either. Then we have a case like Code Geass, which had blatant legitimate product placement by Pizza Hut (though it was sadly replaced for the US release.)
Aww, sniped within a minute. |

Space Dandy also had the Boobies restaurant chain, which I assumed was a reference to Hooters.

Too bad about the trademark thing. I always felt it cool if or when anime showcased name brand stuff. Made me think whatever was going on happened in our world.

I can't remember what show it was, but I distinctly recall a can of soda with Cola written in Coca Cola cursive sitting on top of what looked clearly like a distorted Pepsi globe. The various McDonald's ones are always the most entertaining to see though.

An episode of the Cat Girl Nuku Nuku OVA had Nuku working for a short time at Benny's.

The way Girlish Number danced around mentioning LINE (the messaging app) was so ridiculous and amusing that I'm sure it's a parody of this practice of not using trademarked names. It went around mentioning "that popular messaging app" and talking about "IDs" and even showed LINE clearly opened on a smartphone. Basically everything but mentioning the name.

It's one thing if it's for parodic purposes if the series/movie isn't meant to be taken entirely seriously. But what about other titles if the purpose wasn't parodic? My question is--why don't they just make up their own brand names for products that characters use? They don't have to be anything epic or memorable, they could even be staff in-jokes (which is what Pixar does). In my opinion, considering the story is taking place in a fictional world or an alternative version of our own world, that option is far less distracting than making up words that sound similar to brand names that we know. |

Not for the likes of GunBuster! Its background artists were clearly attentive to matters more important than copyrights. |

At least in the USA, there might not be as much an issue if it became a generic trademark.

Excellent info Justin.
I didn't know that their was so much thorough work behind getting permission to clear these matters up. |

I got a kick out of seeing my favorite bourbon make an appearance in the Captain Tylor OVAs. They changed the coloring of the label, but it was otherwise very recognizable.
On the other hand, I found it distracting to see some scenes in Fairy Tail where bottles of alcohol were clearly based on real brands. Considering the entire setting is fictional, seeing that was a bit distracting. |
