THE SCHOOL
What kind of school?
Ysgol Uwchradd Glan Clwyd is a Welsh-medium, comprehensive, community school for young people from 11-18 years old. All subjects at all levels (with the exception of English) are taught through the medium of Welsh. Where appropriate English may be used in order to ensure that pupils fully develop their competency in both languages.
Where?
The school is located in St. Asaph near the Cathedral. Ysgol Glan Clwyd moved to its present home in 1969 and occupies a pleasant open site with views of the Vale of Clwyd and Clwydian Hills. The school is housed in a mixture of old and new buildings and serves the school's community and the local community.
What area does it serve?
The school has a large catchment area which extends along the coastal belt from Abergele through Rhyl and Prestatyn to Holywell and includes the lower part of the Vale of Clwyd and surrounding hills south and beyond Denbigh. Numerous large and small primary schools feed Ysgol Glan Clwyd - they are both natural Welsh and designated Welsh schools. Learners also come from other primary schools.
The first of its kind
The school was established in 1956 and was the first Welsh-medium secondary school in Wales. It was originally located in Rhyl. Since this pioneering school was opened, a number of similar schools have opened throughout Wales and their number is still increasing. This is due to their success and the benefits of the type of education offered within them.
What is the school's basic philosophy?
* Welsh is the official language of the school and the language of communication at all times (except in the English lessons). All pupils should use Welsh regularly, therefore, for the benefit of their education.
* The aim of the school is to provide a warm Welsh environment in which every pupil is respected and in so doing encouraging self-respect and respect for others.
* All pupils at the school are given the same opportunity. Every pupil is of equal value and is to have the same attention and provision whatever his/her sex, background, age or ability. We aim to provide extra educational provision for the academically bright and we guarantee that provision to all pupils who experience learning difficulties.
* Parents/guardians are welcome to contact the school and arrange to visit to discuss any matter relating to the welfare and development of their child.
We aim to ensure that every pupil enjoys an equal share of the resources available in order to develop every individual to the full.
