Why take russian course?

It is accepted to distinguish common-literary russian language and language of fiction. Influence of language of fiction on common-literary language is very great. In Russian language are presented local dialects, a different sort slangs, also informal conversation, popular speech.
Presently in system of Russian there are significant changes - in its semantic system, stylistics, the dictionary, types of word-combinations. On supervision of specialists in Russian philology, deviations from norms and traditions of the literary language standard became prominent feature of a modern condition of language. Borders of a literary language have appeared washed away, norms weakened. Russian has entered into a new century in a varying historical condition, and the speech based on it became individualized, rich and expressive.
In each alive language there is a big layer of international lexicon. The huge sizes of Russia, its intensive contacts with many countries in the East, the South and the West, its open spaces and its history have led to very big number of loans and in Russian. More often this phenomenon should be considered not as lack, but as advantage, as process of enrichment of languages. Russian has appeared capable to adopt and reinterpret a word and concepts from other languages - both east, and western.

Russian language is spoken by 280 million people; it ranks with English and Chinese as one of the three major world languages. Over a quarter of the world's scientific literature is published in Russian. With the end of the Cold War, Russia has opened its door to international businesses, banking, mass media, culture, and entertainment. Thousands of Russians travel to the United States for business and pleasure each year, and thousands more have made the United States their home. The demand today for professionals who know Russian language is great and is growing.

Although with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the motivations to learn Russian language may appear to have lessened, nothing could be further from the truth. Russia is still a country rich in many ways: literature, drama, music, and culture. In addition, for the West, Russian language will continue to be the medium of exchange with the former republics of the Soviet Union, at least until their own languages gain a larger following in this country.

Here are just a few of the many reasons to learn Russian in Russia:

  • Russian - language of science. Today Russian is widely used outside Russia. It is applied as language of a science - means of dialogue, means of coding and storage of universal knowledge (60-70% of all world information is published in English and Russian languages). Russian also is a necessary accessory of world systems of the communications (broadcasts, air- and space communication, etc.).
Russian and other world languages are characterized by public functions. For example, they carry out a role of lingus franca, i.e. the intermediary in distribution of a level of knowledge to the different countries; become languages of diplomacy, international trade, transport, tourism. Besides such languages are characterized also by their conscious choice for studying and use (for example, a recognition their subject of teaching at schools and high schools of the majority of the countries; de jure recognition as a working language in the international organizations, etc.)
  • Language of Russian culture. Russian became advanced, rich, opened in the potentialities, ordered, historically balanced language, capable to serve all needs - not only national, but also universal. It has occured in many respects owing to creativity of Russian people, Russian scientists, policy, technics, culture and in бульшей degrees of the literature that was the main source of development, processing and polishing for Russian. The universal importance of fiction, all culture created in certain language, is of great importance at assignment to language of the status "world".
  • Government, politics and international relations. It is necessary to tell, that Russian language on open CIS spaces has resisted, and its authority is connected today not with pressure, but only with its advantages and needs. Russian language continues to play the important role in all spheres in the CIS countries and, first of all, in sphere of culture. Russian is irreplaceable and in the field of interethnic dialogue. The knowledge of Russian is a positive part of that heritage which remains on the post-soviet space.
  • Proficiency in Russian language is essential for entering Russian University.. Russia has a long-standing tradition in high-quality education for all citizens. It probably has also one of the best mass-education systems in the world producing a literacy rate (98%) exceeding most Western European countries. Education is split into a compulsory Basic Education, and ongoing Higher Education. Proficiency in the language of instruction is essential to successful study. Consequently, foreign students must attend a Russian language course and pass the final examination in order to be qualified for admission. Where another language is the language of instruction for a particular course, students will also be required to prove their proficiency in this language. Foreign students will be required to attend a preparatory course which involves study in the Russian language and in relevant academic subjects. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for admission to state-allocated study places for which tuition fees are not charged.
