Mind the closing doors: catch a film in Old Street Station
‘I’m going underground (going underground)…’ Those aren’t my words, but the words of Paul Weller and his Jam pals. What the Modfather couldn’t possibly have imagined back in the olden days (did they even have electric trains then?) was that he could one day be going underground to watch an actual film.
That day has arrived. Next month, pop-up cinema geniuses Press Play have managed to persuade TfL to let them screen five films on the Underground, a first of its kind. Old Street Station will be the venue for two screenings every night from August 6-10 including ‘Fight Club’, ‘The Italian Job’, ‘Casablanca’, ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Lock Stock….’
Don’t worry, you won’t be disturbed by commuters wandering in front of the screen as it’s not actually on the platform but a unit in the station. However, organisers promise to create an intimate experience complete with comfy seats, a pop-up bar and treats from the likes of Propercorn, Urban Fruit and Spun Candy.
Move fast though, only 40 tickets will be available for each screening otherwise you’ll be ‘down in the tube station at midnight’ but unable to watch the film (is anyone else freaked out that The Jam seemed to have foreseen this event 30 years ago?).
