To highlight Jain heritage sites of Khandagiri and Udaygiri

BHUBANESWAR: Former Indian ambassador to America Lalit Mansingh and eminent musician Raghunath Panigrahi would be conferred the Kharavela Samman and K.N.Memorial Samman for the year 2009 respectively during the ensuing seventh annual Kharavela festival here. The event is being hosted at the foothills of the historic

Khandagiri hills here by the city-based K. N. Foundation and supported by the departments of culture, tourism and Panchayati Raj of the State government besides Eastern Zonal Cultural centre, Kolkata.

Announcing the awards, Culture Minister S.N.Patro, chairperson of the festival committee, said that the festival scheduled to be held from February 3 to 6 has been designed to promote Bhubaneswar as a city of culture and heritage besides highlighting the ancient Jain heritage sites of the Khandagiri and Udaygiri hills as major tourists’ destinations. The ancient Magha mela being organised at the same site coincides with the festival that attracts a huge turnout of visitors, he added. Kharavela Samman, named after the famed emperor Kharavela of ancient Orissa, is being conferred on an eminent Oriya every year for making a significant contribution to further Orissa’s image and interests internationally.

Similarly, the K.N.Memorial Samman has been instituted in memory of the father of the founder of the K.N.Foundation to honour an eminent Oriya in the field of culture.

Committee secretary J. Badapanda said that the six-day festival would showcase about 500 artistes representing folk, tribal and classical genres from 14 Indian states. An Odissi troupe from the US is also performing in the event, he added.

The department of sports and youth affairs is collaborating with the hosts this year in presenting various martial arts traditions of Orissa.
