Rashid Pelpuo confirmed as Sports Minister

President John Evans Atta Mills has confirmed Hon. Alhaji Rashid Pelpuo, Member of Parliament for Wa Central Constituency in the Upper West region, as the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Rashid Pelpuo until his confirmation as the substantive minister has been acting in that capacity for the past four months.

The position became vacant in June, 2009 when Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak resigned to battle allegations of financial malfeasance.

Then Chief Accountant of the ministry, Adim Odoom, accused Alhaji Muntaka of spending over $12,000 dollars belonging to the ministry on his child’s pampers.

He was also alleged to have traveled with his girl friend to Ivory Coast for the final match between Ghana and Congo in the CHAN tournament.

According to Mr Odoom, Alhaji Muntaka took unilateral decision and had no respect for the procedures in the ministry. He was again accused of having given out a VW Passat vehicle to his wife without the prior knowledge of his directors.

However, the matter triggered widespread criticism and condemnations from members of the public and some top government officials, who at the time said the minister’s action goes contrary to promises the NDC made during the 2008 election campaign.

Against that backdrop, the Member of Parliament for Asawase Constituency finally succumbed to the pressures of the general public and relinquished his position by tendering in his resignation to President Mills.
