Wozniak stinks, says Dancing judge
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak last night shot back with 'I'm still standing' after being blasted by the 'Dancing With the Stars' judges for a performance that one said 'really stunk.' Read more...

Review: The new MacBook Air, now with extra SSD goodness
If the first MacBook Air was a revolutionary take on the Apple laptop line, the new version is an evolutionary advance that offers a noticeable speed boost and better storage options. And the top-end model is a lot cheaper than it was when it debuted in January.

SongGenie 1.1
If you've got lots of music files with incomplete or missing artist, album, or song tags, and you want to spare yourself the time of figuring out what those tags should be, SongGenie can help tidy up your music library. The program analyzes all your tracks using "acoustic fingerprints" to compare them with information in the online MusicIP database, which contains some 8 million tracks (and apparently works with MusicBrainz.org), to find missing tags or discrepancies.

Time Capsule
The 2009 version of Apple's Time Capsule combines the mundane tasks of networking, file sharing, and backups into one device, and it includes some cool new features to boot. Time Capsule, basically an Airport Extreme base station with a 500GB or 1TB internal hard drive, is designed to be a wireless Time Machine target for one or more Macs as well as a NAS (network attached storage) device.

Latest iMovie update adds stealthy features, fixes
Whenever Apple releases minor updates to its software offerings, you'll find us poking lighthearted jabs at the company for having extremely terse and standardized release notes. It's pretty much a given, for example, to see the phrase "improves overall stability" on the release notes of all Apple software updates. But sometimes the company slips actual new features into updates under that cover of darkness, as with the recently released 8.0.1 update for iMovie.

Review: Apple's new Airport Extreme gets dual-band Wi-Fi
Apple's new Airport Extreme wireless router looks just like its predecessor, but now offers dual-band networking for people with a mixed-wireless environment and "guest networking" for wireless visitors.

FastMac U-Charge laptop battery charger
Many road warriors carry a spare laptop battery with them so they can extend their work time away from a power source (assuming their laptop uses a removable battery, of course; two of Apple's recent models do not). But while multiple batteries are useful when working, they present a challenge when charging: You can charge only one at a time inside your laptop, and if you're actually using your laptop, charging takes longer because the laptop itself grabs a good amount of the power.

AccountEdge 2009
AccountEdge 2009 is the first release of the financial accounting package in several years that offers more than minor tweaks to the back end of the application or cosmetic interface changes to the front end. While the 2007 update brought revisions to the code base, making AccountEdge a Universal application, and the 2008 version streamlined the interface, giving users a more unified experience, neither of those updates offered much in the way of new features, tangible change, or increased value to longtime users of the program.

Review: Apple's Mac Mini offers versatility, better graphics
Apple's Mac Mini, the least-expensive Mac available, still offers all of the versatility users have come to love. And with improved Nvidia graphics and a SuperDrive available now in the $599 model, it still makes sense economically -- as long as you don't trick it out.

iClip Lyrics 1.3.3
If you've never manually added lyrics to a track in iTunes, the process goes like this: You select the track, choose File: Get Info, click on the Lyrics tab in the Info window, type or paste the lyrics into the large text field, and then click on OK. It's not a difficult task, but it's a hassle to perform more than occasionally--let alone to do it for every track in your iTunes library. Which is too bad, because once you've added lyrics, they aren't confined to iTunes's Info window; you can also view them on your iPod or iPhone.

Rethinking MacHeist
Although in previous years I'd only watched from the sidelines, I decided to give into the temptation and purchase the MacHeist bundle this year. Thirteen great Mac applications (iSale, Picturesque, SousChef, World of Goo, PhoneView, LittleSnapper, Acorn, Kinemac, WireTap Studio, Big Bang Board Games, BoinxTV, The Hit List, and Espresso), the combined value of which comes up to US$975.70, are being sold for the ridiculously low price of $39--seriously, who could resist the urge?

Apple's all-in-one iMac hits the sweet spot of style and performance -- and the stunning 24-in. model starts at $300 less than before.
