When it comes to hackers we tend to think they’re just creating their exploits for the thrill of it. When we think about Internet scams though, we immediately think (know) profit is the main motive. We read about credit card numbers getting pilfered, identities stolen and bank accounts getting hijacked, but do we ever think about how much the miscreants are actually pulling in for their efforts.

Government grants to counter ID theft
Yesterday the Justice Department announced that $1.7 million in grants will be made available to help ease the burden on local, regional and national organizations and agencies that help victims of identity theft. This governmentexecutive.com article "Justice details grants to help victims of ID theft" by Andrew Noyes, points out that agencies will be getting access to grant money to improve their efforts in aiding victims - nearly 20 million people in 2006 alone.

Lawmakers step up to the plate !
I can see why the bill mentioned here in Grant's article "Senate passes cybercrime bill aimed at victim restitution" was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate. Right now only companies and official agencies can seek prosecution of criminals who threaten to shut down or damage computers.
