Aboriginal Studies Press (ASP) is Australia’s leading publisher of Indigenous studies. We’re the publishing arm of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).

We publish up to ten new titles annually and choose outstanding writing that promotes an understanding of Australian Indigenous cultures.

Published in 1997 this volume celebrates the life and work of one of Australia’s foremost anthropologists, Les Hiatt. He was an extraordinary scholar of Australian Aboriginal societies who promoted Australian Aboriginal studies within both the academic world and within the wider public for almost 50 years.

This publication is a free download in memory of Les Hiatt, Foundation Member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, and the Institute’s President and Chairman of Council from 1974–82. Hiatt was an Honorary Visiting Fellow at AIATSIS since 1998.

Jukurrpa - pronounced joo'-kur-pa (with the 'oo' as in put') is the Warlpiri spelling of the word which means 'Dreaming;, 'Story' or 'Law' in some Central Australian languages. (It is also spelt Tjukurpa in Pitjantjatjara and Tjukurrpa in Pintupi). All life and laws by which people live were created in the Jukurrpa by the ancestral beings who made the land and whose essence remains in the land.
