General Information
Trashigang is one of the largest dzongkhags in the country. It has three drungkhags viz Sakten, Thrimshing and Wamrong and 16 gewogs viz Bartsham, Bidung, Kanglung, Kangpara, Khaling, Lumang, Merak, Nanong, Phongmey, Radi, Sakten, Samkhar, Shongphu, Thrimshing, Yangneer and Uzarong with 8,464 houesholds.

Though the dzongkhag has over 93 kms of internal feeder roads, most settlements are still inaccessible by motor roads. Rough land terrain and scattered settlements make delivery of services difficult and costly.

With 52 schools, education coverage in the dzongkhag is fairly satisfactory. The gross primary enrolment rate is about 55. On the health front, the dzongkhag has achieved over 90% immunization coverage. Around 5,000 households have access to piped drinking water supply and 3,813 households have electricity. There are over 500 telephone lines, majority of which are in the urban centers.

Only about 15 percent of the total land area is under cultivation. Maize, wheat, paddy, mustard and barley are the main cereals grown in the dzongkhag. Limited arable land coupled with lack of farm infrastructure, in particular farm roads, have impact on farm productivity. Potatoes, vegetables, essential oils and woven local textiles are the main source of cash income. The nearest market for any farm surpluses is Samdrup Jongkhar which is about 200 kms away.
