The number and type of special events on offer in many regions have grown at a rapid rate in recent years (Janiskee 1996). Special events now form an integral component of the tourism product in many regions. Although the level of research into special events has also grown during this decade, little analysis of the supply of special events has been conducted (Getz, Murphy and Smee 1994). This study involved an in-depth analysis of Victoria's special event calendar in order to explore trends in the temporal, spatial and thematic offering of events in the state. It was found that there were statistically significant differences in the thematic and temporal offerings in the various tourism regions in the state. It was concluded that an ongoing systematic analysis of this type could lead to more effective utilisation of event related infrastructure and a better match of event offerings to event demand.
