What made "Motivation" a standout from New Jersey bedroom producer Clams Casino's recent beat tape was its uncanny combination of New York bap and something even more sinister and screwed; the track's fist-pumping synth stabs and woozy, yo-yo'd melody are the stuff of darkest magic. So it's understandable for followers to hear a little Motivation II: The Reckoning in "Gorilla", the closing track to Clammy's new Rainforest EP-- both songs conjure a ghostly holler from somewhere south of purgatory. "Gorilla" is a more introspective affair, though, perhaps due to the fact that it was made with the purpose of being an instrumental piece unto itself. ("Motivation"-- as well as all of Clams' pre-Rainforest material-- was originally produced as beat to rap over.) And while it's not impossible to imagine some grizzled vet going hard on "Gorilla"'s brute animosity, you wouldn't dare upset its atmosphere.
