According to its linguistic classification, it belongs to the Southern Athabaskan branch of the Na-Dené language family. It is mainly spoken on the territory of the Navajo Nation and its surrounding areas.

The Navajo Nation spans the North-Eastern region of the State of Arizona as well as parts of New Mexico and Utah. Its capital is Tségháhoodzání (Window Rock).
