Project idea

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) performs research in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, in particular Indonesia and the Dutch Caribbean. The organization is keen to contribute to the geographical gap of Wikimedia. However, they do not have the skills. Within Wikipedia, there exists a gap in content describing topics in South Asia and the (Dutch) Caribbean, particularly those that fall in gender and race categories. Similarly, while historical and notable content exists, it has not been incorporated into Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects. There is already an upcoming community in the Netherlands through the Wiki Goes Caribbean project and the Research Project on the letters of Ki Hadjar. This community still needs support in order be self sufficient. Most Staff members and students at KITLV/University of Leiden remain untrained and do not contribute regularly to Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects. For those that are contributors very few are women or people from communities in South Asia and the (Dutch) Caribbean. In addition, structural projects which entail Wikimedia in Education are a rarity in the Netherlands. Though there have been several educational projects in the Netherlands in the past and some teachers who use it on their own accord. Wikimedia in Education is not as strongly developed as Wikimedia in GLAMs. An underlying note is that within Academic life there is still much prejudice towards using Wikimedia or open sources in academic research. Academics still frown

What is your solution?

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
The solution is in two parts.

Firstly, there is both a huge amount of content and knowledge available in KITLV that can be made available under an open license to bridge the geogap on South-Asia and the Caribbean.A Wikimedian-in-Residence will actively reach out to the community at KITLV and train the staff and students to become active contributors to Wikimedia projects. By building their Wikimedia skill set their expertise will make a helpful contribution to the geogap. Building this skill set; and Integration and solidifying of Wikimedia into the curriculum and research projects will be done by creating educational modules for staff and students, but also other events. This will help the community around these topics grow. Teaching and research go hand-in-hand, especially in academic life. This is the second part of the solution.By providing an example that Wikimedia and research are compatible it will ease resistance to using Wikimedia in research. KITLV is willing to supervise the research project Letters from Tamansiswa Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum library. With this part of the project. We want to corroborate the claim that the Open source community, and especially Wikimedia, is valuable to Academic life and that it is possible to publish an academic paper based on such sources. The KITLV is willing to host and supervise the Wikipedian in residence and provide A workspace Access to Library resources, print and electronic collections, and technological infrastructure Teaching and learning spaces for conducting face-to-face instructional sessions with small and larger groups Opportunities to interact with staff and students Space in curriculums for Wikimedia Responsibilities Be available to commit 20 hours per week to the residency. On-site attendance is expected for the majority of the residency. Facilitate partnership between the Wikimedia community and KITLV Build capacity for KITLV to work with Wikimedia on projects. Promote understanding of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia commons, Wikidata, and the open movement among the KITLV community (students, faculty and staff, including library personnel) through workshops and events. Assist staff and students wishing to integrate Wikipedia into their teaching and learning activities. Coordinate events, such as edit-a-thons, that bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement.

Project goals

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. A meaningful addition to bridging the Geogap on several Wikimedia projects
  2. Promote understanding and skillsets of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia commons, Wikidata, and the open movement among the KITLV community (students, faculty and staff, including library personnel) through workshops and events.
  3. As a result of the Wikipedian in Residence at KITLV an academic ecosystem is created where the Wikimedia Projects are an integral part of the courses

Project impact

How will you know if you have met your goals?

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

The Responsibilities of the WiR will be

  1. Be available to commit 20 hours per week to the residency. On-site attendance is expected for the majority of the residency.
  2. Facilitate partnership between the Wikimedia community and KITLV
  3. Build capacity for KITLV to work with Wikimedia on projects.
  4. Promote understanding of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia commons, Wikidata, and the open movement among the KITLV community (students, faculty and staff, including library personnel) through workshops and events.
  5. Assist staff and students wishing to integrate Wikipedia into their teaching and learning activities.
  6. Coordinate events, such as edit-a-thons, that bring Wikipedians on-site to work with staff on content creation and improvement.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Project goals

  • Community Engagement
  • Recruit and train the staff and students of the KITLV and surrounding educational communities to become active contributors to Wikimedia projects.
  • Organize meet-ups, contests, social media, and edit-a-thons to solidify local Wikimedians and recruit new contributors. Initiate the training of staff and students to equip them with skills to add to Wikimedia projects.
  • To invite staff and students to improve or create content related to those topic areas identified as important to this project.
  • Engage departments and colleges at the University that have the interest in these topic areas and provide training to new contributors.
  • Engage and provide training to student organizations who also have an interest in adding content.

Wikimedia in Education

  • Organize and integrate two modules of workshops for staff and students. A#llow students to get ECTS/credits from the course
  • Integrate usage and content creation on Wikimedia-projects in other courses.
  • Consult with Staff and students and use their assessments in identifying those articles that need to be improved or created.
  • Open Colloquia for all staff and students of Leiden University.

Project plan

Activities

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
The creation and implementation of the educational courses will take most of the time and this will require creating awareness of the possibilities of Wikimedia within an academic environment

As a result of the Wikipedian in Residence at KITLV an academic ecosystem is created where the Wikimedia Projects are an integral part of the courses. The courses and activities will facilitate partnership between the Wikimedia community and KITLV and build capacity for KITLV to work with Wikimedia on projects.

The project will promote understanding of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia commons, Wikidata, and the open movement among the KITLV community (students, faculty and staff, including library personnel) through workshops and events. With this project we want to corroborate the claim that the Open source community, and especially Wikimedia, is valuable to Academic life and that it is possible to publish an academic paper based on such sources.

We will also achieve a solid set of training skills that will foster the Education Program in the next generation of professors interested in assessing their courses with the creation and enhancement of Wikipedia articles.
