Ryan Gravenberch: “We Have To Finish The League Well Now”

The Dutch midfielder touched on the squad’s disappointment after dropping points to West Ham, and moving on with preparations for Spurs.

West Ham United v Liverpool FC - Premier League

The old saying goes that March is “in like a lion, out like a lamb”. The feels and apt way to describe the month of April for Liverpool. The Reds came into the month with high hopes for both Europa League and Premier League titles. In the end, they finished the month like meek lambs after dropping points in four of the six Premier League matches in April.

The latest disappointment, and last match of the month, came on Saturday as Liverpool dropped a late lead to finish with a draw to West Ham. One of the few standouts of the match, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, highlighted the disappointment within the squad with the result.

“We wanted to win and we didn’t do it, so we’re disappointed. Now the league will be really difficult and also we are out of Europe. We have to finish the league well now.”

The draw came on the heels of a demoralizing loss to crosstown rivals Everton in one of the worst performances of the season. Gravenberch feels to back-to-back results with dropped points is a big blow after being all but mathematically eliminated from the title race.

“It was a really hard [week]. Of course as a player you want to win prizes and now it will be really difficult. You have to keep dreaming and keep believing always, but it will be really hard for us. Everyone is disappointed because we wanted to win [at West Ham].”

While the Liverpool players and backroom staff are all unhappy with the result, they must now refocus for a pesky Spurs side that play with high energy and without abandon.

“Everybody is disappointed. But we have to go [forward] now. Tottenham is this week and we have to prepare for that – and we will do. We have to prepare well for them and we have to believe and we have to win that game.”
