Amidst the lake levels plummeting below 10 per cent, which is the lowest in three years, due to the intense summer in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday announced a water cut in the city from May 30 as a precautionary measure.

According to the civic body, a 5 per cent cut in water supply will be introduced from Thursday and it will be further raised to 10 per cent from June 5.

On Saturday, the water stock in the seven lakes which supply water to the city dipped to 9.69 per cent. In 2023, the lake levels on the same day had touched 15.10 per cent, while in 2022, the water stock stood at 19.95 per cent.

In light of the fast depleting lake levels, the civic body took the decision to implement the water cut, considering the increasing rate of evaporation.

“The 5 per cent and 10 per cent reduction will also be applicable to the water supply given to Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation, and other villages by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), from the due date respectively,” read a civic bulletin.

Festive offer

Senior BMC officials maintained that there was no need for panic as the civic body has also got the state government’s irrigation department nod to use a reserve water stock of 1.37 lakh MLD from Bhatsa Dam, and 91,130 lakh MLD from Upper Vaitarna Dam, in case of dire a situation.

“Furthermore, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted the timely arrival of the monsoon this year, which is also a positive thing,” said an official.
