Sitenotice?

Is the sitenotice disappeared or something? I tried everything (MediaWiki:Sitenotice id, logging out, ...) but nothing helps... What's the problem? SPQRobin 18:44, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

It seems al wikis with disabled cache of pages like special:Wantedpages have no Sidnotice anymore. Same story at Limburgish Wiktionair. --Ooswesthoesbes 20:16, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

The site notices are automatically replaced by the new CentralNotice. It was only visible on the English Wikipedia at first for development and debugging, but it still disabled the site notices on other wikis. It should be visible everywhere now. Brion Vibber, the developer, hoped to make site notices work at the same time by today, though I'm not sure if he's succeeded yet. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:15:44, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

As on Incubator we sometimes need to move many pages (prefix changes, wrong iso code before) and then also text replacements, e.g. from "wikt/" to "wt/", or delete many pages when a test project was moved to an own subdomain or a quite large test should be deleted, it's faster (and easier) to do this by bot. So I propose we have a bot which has a "command list" on wiki, which can be edited (who would have thought that) to make that bot doing this (so not everybody needs to register an own bot).

About extremaduran request

Hi, community! It's the first time i write here, and well, i have two questions:

• On the one hand, what have we got to do now? I mean, extremaduran contributors are asking me for the reasons extremaduran wikipedia is not yet aproved. The interface is almost translated (85%) and we have more than 300 articles. Each new article we create, is more work to do later, exporting files... so, should we continue translating articles? or it's better if we start translating other proyects? (like Commons, which main page is alredy translated)...
• On the other hand, we've seen the message "Don't forget to add a prefix to categories!"... ups... i think this message have been written for extremaduran wikipedia... we didn't know it, so sorry for the inconvenience. At the moment, move all categories would be very dificult (there are too many articles to change), so, if nobody oppose, we won't create new categories, and we will delete all those categories when the wikipedia is created.

• You can work further, but I will ask to the langcom (which approves the tests) to look to this test project. About moving the pages when the site is created, that's really no work *if* you don't start to copy them when the site is created, but wait on someone (me for example) to export and import them.
• You don't need to say sorry, because first there was a text on the main page saying that you don't need to add a prefix to categories, but we changed that because otherwise they will not be imported, or there can be a category for two test projects. I would say, try to move them, but if you don't want to do that, you don't have to do it.

If a site is created, there is a text on the main page to invite you to start. But actually this is totally wrong. I'm working on this to change this. I'll request to change the text on the main pages of new created sites and I'm working on a help page which explains all steps to do, including when the site is created. Better coordination for importing/exporting from/to Incubator

We have two important projects:

• Incubator:Coordination for importing closed projects - when an inactive site is locked/closed

This is a good question because I think that more wikis in simplified languages could be made to give more accessibility to those whose first language's wikipedia has less contribution and to help in language learning. French, German and Spanish might be good canditates: if English with its two million article can give 20,000 articles in Simple English, we might expect that languages with over 300,000 articles give about 3,000 articles each, which is more than many small wikis. skh Shakhordoy Wikipedia

The 'skh = Shakhordoy Wikipedia' looks a bit strange. 'skh' is the ISO 639-3 code for "Sikule" http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=skh , a language from Indonesia.

The incubator articles are about kaukasian/Georgian themes.

I cannot find a correct code for "Shakhordoy" nor anything about the language itself.

Re-enable uploads for bureaucrats

Currently uploading is completely disabled on Incubator; you need to upload on Commons (see Incubator:Upload for more info). The problem is, we have a logo which could need to be changed, though this will be rarely. So the solution would be: re-enable uploading, but restrict this to bureaucrats.    Did you read what I wrote about the author's rights? Why test admins should use Commons only if their wikis allow licenses not allowed on Commons? Say there was some new project in en. Enwikis allow fair use. So why couldn't they be able to upload such images here? Of course following some rules (which is one of the reasons only sysops could), such as those images must meet the allowed licenses on such language wikis, they can't be used elsewhere and will be deleted after the project isn't here etc...

I logged in as User:SPQRobot who has sysop+bot access and he seems to be able to upload files (didn't test it, I just see the "normal" upload form). If users click on "Upload file" they will go the Special:Upload where they can see just one sentence "This action is restricted to bureaucrats". I'd propose to set $wgUploadNavigationUrl = 'http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incubator:Upload'; so they will go to Incubator:Upload where there is more info and instructions. Esperanto keyboard support via special:Gadgets

m:wikt:yi:MediaWiki:Gadget-EoMagicalConversion and m:wikt:yi:MediaWiki:Gadget-EoMagicalConversion.js support the Esperanto magical conversion to the editor. (source 1 → source 2). Such an option would be very useful in order to be able to edit Esperanto texts at this projects from any device even without Esperanto keyboard. It is working also at w:ps:special:Gadgets. Please install the EoMagicalConversion gadget at this project.

Sorry, but Not done - there is the MediaWiki:Edittools system, so this is unneeded. Exemption doctrine policy

Hello. As you might know, the Wikimedia Foundation approved a resolution concerning non-free images more than a year ago. The resolution says that unless Wikimedia projects create an exemption doctrine policy (EDP) for non-free images, all of those images shall be deleted by March 23, 2008 (which was a few days ago). We'd now like to gather information from the projects about their exemption policies in one place so we can check their validity, and if images on those projects are in accordance with the Foundation's resolution. Your project is one of these we don't have information about, so it'd be great if you could add it to the page listing all EDPs, meta:Non-free_content. If you have any questions about the page or don't have an EDP yet and want one, you can use the appropriate talkpage on Meta or just contact me directly on Meta or by e-mail (however, please note that I'm just a volunteer and therefore not in a position to give any official advice). Thanks for your cooperation!

My personal opinion now: I would strongly advise against implementing an EDP on Incubator. In my opinion, using unfree images is against the mission of Wikimedia and encouraging new wikis to use them would only cause problems later for them: they would have to create an EDP on their own and solve image copyright issues, while now they can just easily use images from Wikimedia Commons only and not worry about these things. If you decide to not create any EDP here, it might be useful to move images from incubator to commons; I can help with that if needed. — Timichal 19:20, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Unuseful test projects

I'd like to know: what should be done about test projects on incubator which have few chance to develop? For example the Gronings wp/gos and Drents wp/drt test projects. Both are subdivisions of Nedersaksisch nds-nl:, which has a project since two years and is of course accepting Gronings and Drents contributions. Invented language codes

I suggest to strictly not use plain invented language codes. The chance to create possible conflicts in the future apeears too high to me.

An example of a code which imho should not be used as it currently is, is rde being used for a Ruhrdeutsch Wikipedia proposal at the moment.

Instead of inventing code rde, we should be using either

• qrd — an ISO 639-2 code for private use, or a similar one, or
• gem-NW-Ruhrgebiet — ISO 639-2 other Germanic, ISO 3166-DE area Northrhine-Westphalia, and invented (slightly incorrect and imprecise) subdivision Ruhrgebiet, or
• deu-NW-ruhr — ISO 639-2 Standard German, ISO 3166-DE area Northrhine-Westphalia, and invented subdivision having a shorter name.

licenses of new projects

No new projects are started unless the license of the new project is both GFDL and CC-by-sa. The easiest way of making sure that new projects can be created is to relicense the Incubator itself.

Renaming main pages of tests

IIRC, it has been proposed several times to rename Main Pages from e.g. "Wp/nl" to "Wp/nl/Hoofdpagina". The part "Hoofdpagina" should correspond to the message MediaWiki:Mainpage/nl, as translated in the MediaWiki software.

This would have the following advantages:

• On "Wp/nl" we could include a template with information on e.g. whether the language code is valid, and the status (open, approved, ...) of the test.
• The last time I imported new created wikis, I experienced that the main page needed another specific fix (or you fix it in the XML file, or you move the page after importing). This would save another large part of the time we spend on importing ;-)
• Probaby more...

I tried to make a kind of example at Wp/en and Wp/en/Main Page :D.

Just an add-on: The page name after the prefix should correspond to the MediaWiki:Mainpage in such language by default but not enforced since some wikis put their main page into Project: or Portal: namespaces.
