Blackbox
German
editAlternative forms
editEtymology
editBorrowed from English black box.
Pronunciation
editNoun
editBlackbox f (genitive Blackbox, plural Blackboxen or Blackboxes)
- (aviation) black box; flight recorder
- Synonym: Flugschreiber
Usage notes
edit- The Duden prescribes that unadapted borrowings from English consisting of an adjective (that carries the stress) and a noun be written solid (Blackbox) or, alternatively, spaced (Black Box). The hyphenated spelling (Black-Box) is proscribed.[1]
- Blackbox refers especially to the protective box, while Flugschreiber refers especially to the recorders inside of it. Hence, die Blackbox bergen (“to recover the black box”), but den Flugschreiber auswerten (“to analyse the flight recorder”). Nevertheless, both terms are also used interchangeably.
- While the simplex Box has only the Germanised plural Boxen, the compound Blackbox also uses the English plural in -es.
