File mover

User:Gpkp

Hello. Requesting perm. I've been renaming files in Commons from around a year. Now I am interested to contribute in Wiki too. --Gpkp [utc] 18:19, 13 August 2021 (UTC) Gpkp [utc] 18:19, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gpkp, I actually lean to oppose here. I see no recent rename requests (but do share if I missed any) and your uploads are all CamelCase, for example File:DefenceScienceAndTechnologyLaboratory.png, File:W.WallaceClelandImage.jpg, File:MithuAurAapa.jpg and File:UniteHealthShareMinistries.jpg. What files would you want to rename and what would you rename them to? Are you aware of the differences between enwiki and Commons moving guidelines? If you are interested in moving files, you can use LuckyRename to aid in making requests. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 20:00, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz:; I agree if you decline the request based on the fact that I have not made any rename requests. By the way I like to confirm that I wont rename files in CamelCase pattern if I am in a place to rename files (based on the fact that I've not named or renamed any files in CamelCase pattern in Commons)
Answering the queries: I wanted to rename files listed in: Category:Wikipedia files requiring renaming. About the differences between enwiki and Commons moving guidelines: There are quite a few more criteria in Wiki, being on: misleading names, generic bio-names, Disambiguate files, pejorative/offensive, shadowing a Commons file-name.
Requesting your opinion...
--Gpkp [utc] 06:00, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gpkp, I don't know. The consistent use of CamelCase in your uploads is odd, but if you won't do that when moving files I guess that's not an immediate problem. Will you use a gadget/userscript that automatically performs replacements? LuckyRename (linked above) is the only one I'm aware of, the Commons gadget doesn't work here. When I applied for file mover I wanted to work on the category just like you, as a result the category is now empty most of the time. Here are some files from another maintenance list (they shadow a Commons file or redirect), what would you rename these to and why?
It's okay to cheat by using the Feelin' Lucky button in LuckyRename, somewhat over half of the suggestions are fine as-is. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 10:05, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz:; I will be honest in answering by not using the script; I will rename files as:
files desired rename my notes
File:Haunts of The Brethren of the Coast (map).jpg Haunts of "The Brethren of the Coast".jpg I am aware of WP:FMNN #2, as not to rename it
File:Unidentified potted Haworthia (2008).jpg Unidentified Haworthia.jpg or
Haworthia (2008).jpg
It seems to me that better not to rename it until
unless someone mentions species name in category or description
File:Hebrew keyboard layout (alt key combinations in blue).png Hebrew keyboard layout1.png
Hebrew keyboard layout3.png or:
Hebrew keyboard layout (windows).png
numericals without spaces just because to match WP:FNC#6 harmonize
File:Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe (1926).jpg Hobbs and Sutcliffe (1926).jpg or
Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe (1926).jpg
I am aware that the file should not be renamed until the license-missing issue is fixed
File:Heinrich Bär (Luftwaffe flying ace, born 1913).jpg Heinrich Bär (1944).jpg I am aware that the files are ineligible to be transferred to Commons because of incompitable license
File:The Help (2011 film).jpg The Help (2011 film) poster.jpg
File:Henderson's Boys (book series) logo.jpg Henderson's Boys.jpg or
Henderson's Boys (novel series) logo.jpg
File:Himilo Qaran (political party) logo.jpg Himilo Qaran (political party) logo.jpg
File:Homer Sprague (writer, abolitionist, lieutenant colonel, born 1829).jpg Homer Baxter Sprague (1880).jpg or
Homer Baxter Sprague headshot.jpg
File:Hotel Polen (1977 fire).jpg Hotel Polen, Amsterdam, Netherlands.jpg or
File:Hotel Polen (before 1977 fire).jpg

The reason behind my renaming pattern is to avoid shadowing a Commons file-name, by: ,
*including year the file was created, or
*the full name/location of the subject, or
*including small description of subject, or type of image

Gpkp, I absolutely encourage cheating. Similar to using machine translation you still need to be able to recognize poor suggestions but the suggestions make for a bit more consistency in filenames. The table shows you understand the policy very well. I'd personally avoid using double quotes (") in filenames as they can interfere with some scripts and are illegal if a Windows user tries to save the file to their computer. If you'll replace existing usage (either by hand or using a gadget/userscript) I fully support your application. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 19:50, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz:; Many thanks for your help, suggestions and support! Appreciate your assistance. On the last file in question, I prefer renaming:
Hauntsofthebrethren.jpg to: Haunts of The Brethren of the Coast (map).jpg.
By the way, I've requested renames for the files you have suggested. It would be more helpful for me if you could provide the link to the maintenance list, which you mentioned earlier in this thread.
--Gpkp [utc] 07:50, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gpkp, you put the {{Rename media}} template in the wrong place.. it doesn't belong in the description and a <br> even less so. Just saying, with LuckyRename you couldn't have gotten that wrong. The maintenance is low priority and I chip away at it slowly. Requesting renames for everything on the list won't be helping much. Right now it's more work because I have to remove that <br> everywhere. Now I notice you're inserting them here as well. Why? And you forgot to answer: will you replace existing usage when renaming/use a gadget/userscript that replaces existing usage? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 11:23, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also a bit confused as to why you included "(windows)" in the suggested name for File:Hebrew keyboard layout (alt key combinations in blue).png. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:07, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz:; Answering the queries: I inserted the rename-media tag in the description because, its mentioned in the template's usage section as: the template has to be placed on the file description page. I will replace existing usage once-while renaming. I included 'windows' because, just to keep it simple in renaming, and, as the keyboard's usage is with windows operating system. --Gpkp [utc] 06:43, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gpkp, I clarified the documentation for {{Rename media}}. What do you mean by "I will replace existing usage once"? Is there any other way than once? The keyboard isn't for Windows, it's just a PC keyboard which generally has a Windows key regardless of what operating system is used. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 10:43, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Gpkp: Are you still seeking this permission? I note that you've not filed a rename request since this conversation went stale. Anarchyte (talk) 10:12, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Anarchyte: I am seeking this permission. Requesting to grant if I am eligible. I couldnt find a 'maintanance list' which I requested earlier in this thread. --Gpkp [utc] 07:02, 9 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done as a month trial to allow you to polish any problems you might still have. I have no concern that you would misuse the tool. Anarchyte (talk) 11:06, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would love the file mover rights because it will help reduce work load for other movers and to help move/rename files that desires such. I have come across quite a number of files that needs to be renamed(though I may have forgotten such names) but I saw one today that I would have been able to to do if only I had the rights. Idoghor Melody (talk) 16:41, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Idoghor Melody: I'm not seeing any instances of file rename requests filed by you. Could you please give us some examples of where you would use this role? Anarchyte (talk) 09:54, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Anarchyte: Check this file, the name of the file does not match with the image or the article it is being used for. I noticed the mistakes the uploader made and fixed one (as at that time, the name of the article in the summary was different which I fixed to the name it should be). It was obvious that the uploader made a mistake regarding the name which was supposed to be "The Good Husband" or "The Good Husband (2020 Nigerian movie) Poster". --Comr Melody Idoghor (talk) 10:45, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I usually uploaded multiple files such as logos and title cards, and sometimes the file name I uploaded needs to be changed (if the file name is incorrect or the owner of the said logo uploaded changed something like "Date of the program for the said logo"). I want to request to be a file mover so that I can do things such as I mentioned aside from tagging {{rename media}} at my uploaded logos or title cards.
