Message from WikiProject Wikify

A message from WikiProject Wikify!

Thanks for participating in the October 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive! We made significant progress, wikifying hundreds of articles. However, the backlog still needs a large amount of effort--discussions about the next drive (in December) are underway. Until then, happy editing!

Thanks, it was in large part thanks to you. Since that past I put all of the character pages up for Good Topic nomination (though for some reason everyone that has come to the page wants to talk about episode notability and not whether those articles meet GT criteria). But again, JL wouldn't be on the list, and as such I wouldn't have been able to nominate them, without your copy editing. Thanks again.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 13:03, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In case you're considering shooting more fruits: I started a rough compilation of current and most needed fruit FPs at the link above. Happy for others to list good candidates that they find, or to use it as a guide. It's very disordered right now, but I thought you might want to know about it and possibly find use anyway. GOCE Elections

Hi Diannaa and The Utahraptor, I would like to draw your attention to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators and Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/2011. Please share your thoughts and comments on the Coordinators project page. Thanks! – S Masters (talk) 04:47, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for getting this started. Everything looks brilliant, and I already have a discussion thread I want to start on the talk page! --Diannaa (Talk) 04:54, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! See you there. – S Masters (talk) 04:57, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My thanks

Hi, just wanted to say, firstly, thanks for putting up the Australian English template on Mary MacKillop after, I assume, seeing my edit summary. It was something I was meaning to do when I reverted but it completely slipped my mind. Secondly, I was quite impressed with the way you handled yourself in relation to the move proposals (also on Mary MacKillop). I've seen quite a few move proposals where the editor that suggested the move has become quite argumentative when consensus has gone against them and I just thought I'd say that you handled yourself with aplomb throughout and that, although I opposed the move, I do think that in time (not sure when) the move will become necessary. Jenks24 (talk) 12:28, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did do that after seeing your your edit summary. :-) Well, the thing about democracy is that we need to hear everyone out, and I am not always right. I think that it was the proper thing to do as it has become her official name, but since others disagree, then we have to wait. Maybe in a year or so when the official name is used everywhere, this position might change. But thanks for your very kind words, I really appreciate it, and it put a smile on my face. :-) – S Masters (talk) 01:17, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

November midway newsletter

A first draft of the midway point newsletter is available at User:The Utahraptor/Goce newsletters for further editing. Thanks. I think the Bot is available for delivery this time. --Diannaa (Talk) 02:26, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thank you. – S Masters (talk) 03:08, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since frequently going over the different lists of GOCE members is pretty tedious, I think we should create a project subpage at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletter sign-up. This way, we won't have to do the tedious work of repeatedly digging for GOCE members. And any member can opt-out of it at any time. Thoughts? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:57, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Neat idea. I think it's better calling it /Mailing List instead. We can then manually include everyone there first, arrange it in alphabetical order, and allow anyone to remove themselves if they want. Alternatively, it is a lot less work using AWB(?), as it can pull data from a page. We did use it a while ago, but I don't know how to use it myself, despite having downloaded the program. If someone can teach me, I don't mind helping to send things out. – S Masters (talk) 14:20, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ask Noraft for help. He's experienced with AWB. I'll get started compiling the list. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:23, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but I am really busy and traveling overseas tomorrow, so maybe later in the week. – S Masters (talk) 14:35, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Look out for copyedit typo's

Hey, thanks for your help copyediting - you may want to double-check your copyedits for typo's, as i noticed that you had inadvertently introduced one in This edit. Again, thanks for copyediting "my" article, your version is nicer and i know how irritatingly persistent typing habits can be. Ajbpearce (talk) 17:08, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I'm very sorry for that. It doesn't normally happen (or I hope it doesn't). I guess my eyes are too tired now from copyediting all day (including a 16,000 word article), and I should stop for today. – S Masters (talk) 17:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch, I'm not sure i've ever seen a nominally start class article with 250! citations before. You have my thanks & sympathy! Ajbpearce (talk) 17:20, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a thought

I saw that we have a symbol for the coordinators. I was wondering if you would like to make that into a top icon? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:03, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm thinking of changing them as they were copied from MILHIST. Give me a few days to upload the new ones. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 13:20, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thank you very much for going through the article thoroughly enough to eliminate spaces. It is very much appreciated. If I could just intrude on your time once more, do you think this article is ready for a nomination to GA status? If not, what do you think it needs? Also, any suggestions about how to make it even better would be appreciated too. Thanks in advance! Chipmunkdavis (talk) 17:16, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to go through the article again as I was not happy with the numerous repetition of words, in particular, "Malaysia/Malaysian" and "Celebrate/s". I have given it another once over and have tried to reduce these. If you see some more, please do rephrase the sentences. For example, I found three consecutive sentences that all had Malaysia in it, making it extremely repetitive and completely unnecessary. But otherwise, yes, I enjoyed the article. I think as long as you have addressed all the points brought up in the PR (or was it a GAN?), then you should try to go for a GA. It should be very close to GA standards, if not already there. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 08:20, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it pops up 440 times on google find (although that includes references etc.). I'll cut that down now, especially in the lede! Chipmunkdavis (talk) 09:06, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Multiples of 5000 word articles

In the current GoCE drive, do articles with a word count of a multiple of 5000 words (e.g. 10635) count as that many articles of 5000 words? In other words, would a 10635 word article count as two 5000 word articles or just one, and would a 19533 word article count as 3 5000 word articles? Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:27, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you are correct. For the 5K+ Leaderboard, articles are counted in multiples of 5K. So, a 19,533 word article counts as 3 entries for the 5K+ category. – SMasters (talk) 17:32, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I've put back the "multiple issues" template here because I think they are still there. Eg no sources, language/grammar/syntax problems, unencyclopaedic content. I'm not at all unsympathetic - I'm a UK based Neopagan myself - but there's a lot more to be done here. I'll try and copyedit a bit myself to show willing, but without sources this article will struggle and someone needs to find them! Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 20:41, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Claude Arabo and other AWB changes

Hi - I see your change to the article on Claude Arabo is just moving white space. Per the AWB rules of use, this shouldn't be done ("Avoid making insignificant or inconsequential edits such as only adding or removing some white space"). I've noticed this on other articles you've edited today. Please refrain from making this trivial changes. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 17:55, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Noted, I've ticked that box so that it will skip these. Cheers. SMasters (talk) 17:59, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Don't really see the point in this edit either. Lugnuts (talk) 19:24, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Geoffrey Freeman Allen

Hi, re this edit - how does AWB manage to misspell the name of the article's subject? --Redrose64 (talk) 21:45, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, not sure why that happened, I have fixed the typo. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 01:02, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jeremy Auger

After a raid on the Desire2Learn article by some and subsequent deletion, many references to this major multinational company and major player in the eLearning field have become defunct on wikipedia. This also leaves notables like Mr. Auger and other company officers as not referenced by other articles. At the same time many competing and other company articles exist without any more than a mention they merely exist. Articles do not usually start out with a multitude of facts and statistics and need a chance to grow. It would seem the article for the person mentioned is slated to go on the chopping block, the same way as the Desire2Learn article, eventually, despite being a international player in the emerging eLearning field. Should we move on to Bill Gates and a few others?--173.35.12.158 (talk) 04:34, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to make. I am going through every article that is a biography of a living person, and trying to cleanup the article and place appropriate tags if necessary. Much of the work is semi-automated. The tagging done is not for the article to be deleted. If the article is an orphan, it will be tagged as such. If the person is so prominent, then surely more can be done in terms of linking him/her. Have they not worked anywhere else besides this company? – SMasters (talk) 04:41, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

His previous history is unknown and is probably a new player in the Internet eLearniing field. He is a key player in the company Desire2learn, which I believe to be the second largest of it's kind in the world. The corporation has some legal history with Blackboard Inc. and I am guessing there is still dirty politics in the background. The Desire2Learn article was removed from wikipedia and the company's officers appear to be on the chopping block, also. Perhaps these notables do not care about wikipedia enough to contribute or bother objecting. A simple google search for any of these names will show over 90K hits for d2l inc. and 215K for Mr. Auger. It would seem due to some unknown agenda wikipedia may be left out of this information loop on some of this biographies. Perhaps not being a USA based company has some bearing on this issue. Many other article talks have registered complaints by a multitude of user editors as this becomes apparent in some cases. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.35.12.158 (talk) 03:34, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As I have explained, I did not tag the article for deletion. The article is an orphan, and so will be tagged as such. However, having taken a good look at the article I can see why it might be tagged for deletion in the future. If you want an article to be in Wikipedia, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules here. Please take a look and familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's deletion policy. The company you mentioned probably got deleted due to original research, and lack of reliable sources. There is no hidden agenda. Many non-U.S. companies which are properly sourced can be found in Wikipedia. If you don't want an article deleted, make sure that it complies with the rules, so there is no valid reason for the deletion to take place. Hope this helps. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 05:53, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Plaintext list of GOCE-ers

I see you're sending out notices—do you have a plaintext list of users? If so, could you get it to me somehow? ǝɥʇM0N0farewell 01:11, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes I do. What will you use the list for? Will you be using AWB? If you are, I can tell you how to generate the list. If not, I'm not sure how I can get it to you. Any suggestions? – SMasters (talk) 02:39, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to use it for Contribution Team work, targeting users based on interests. I have AWB, so I could generate it that way - how did you do so? ǝɥʇM0N0farewell 03:23, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, great. The first thing is to select the source as "Links on page" and grab the GOCE mailing list. After you have done that, "convert to talk pages" via "List". Then, you need to grab our membership lists from here and here, adding them to your list. If you want participants from our drives, you can also grab them from each drive page (go to the months you want to grab from). After that, "Filter" the list to only include "User talk:" and check remove duplicates. Also, please remove HJ Mitchell, OlEnglish, Ling.Nut and OhanaUnited from the list as they do not wish to receive any Guild communication. Will this work for you? – SMasters (talk) 04:01, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE elections

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

Elections are currently underway for our inaugural Guild coordinators. The voting period will run for 14 days: 00:01 UTC, Friday 1 December – 23:59 UTC, Tuesday 14 December. All GOCE members in good standing, as well as past participants of any of the Guild's Backlog elimination drives, are eligible to vote. There are six candidates vying for four positions. The candidate with the highest number of votes will become the Lead Coordinator, therefore, your vote really matters! Cast your vote today.

Sugested change to Limbo_(video_game)

Helle SMasters,

I'm not an accompished wikipedia editor and I'm an employee og Playdead, developer of LIMBO, so it's not appropriate for me to do edits, I presume.

I would, however, like to propose a change to the article such that the game tagline, which is currently cited as

"Unsure of his sister's fate, a boy enters the unknown."
with ref to ^ a b c Westbrook, Logan (2001-03-26). "PAX East 2010 Hands On: Limbo". The Escapist. Retrieved 2010-07-23.

is changed to the correct phrase, which is:

"Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy enters LIMBO."
Which can be seen on the download page on Xbox Live Arcade and e.g. on http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/limbo

Best wishes, Mads -- Mads Wibroe, Producer Playdead mads@playdeadgames.com

Madswibroe (talk) 10:08, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mads, Although it is not recommended or ideal, you can make minor, non-controversial edits if you provide a disclosure statement, as long as they are properly sourced. Have a look at declaring an interest. However, I have helped you correct the tagline as per your request. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 11:15, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
