Sisaket (Thai: ศรีสะเกษ, RTGSSi Sa Ket, pronounced [sǐː sàʔ kèːt]) is the town (thesaban mueang) in northeast Thailand that is the capital of Sisaket Province. It incorporates sub-districts (tambon) Mueang Nuea and Mueang Tai and parts of Nong Khrok, Phon Kha, Ya Plong, and Pho, all in Mueang Sisaket District. As of 2008 it had a population of 39,679.[1]

Si is the Thai honorific derived from the Sanskrit title of veneration Sri, and Sisaket is sometimes transliterated as Srisaket, Sri Saket, Si Saket, or Si Sa Ket. The traditional name is Sri Nakhon Lamduan (ศรีนครลำดวน), honored in the name of the Sri Nakhon Lamduan Stadium (สนามกีฬาศรีนครลำดวน), home ground of the Sisaket F.C.

History

The municipality was created in 1936, then named Khu Khan, which was then the name of the province.[2] In 1939 it was renamed Sisaket, following the renaming of the province the year before.[3]

Transportation

Sisaket is on the north-eastern railway line from Bangkok's grand central station, Hua Lamphong Railway Station (หัวลำโพง) to Warin Chamrap (วารินชำราบ), and also has frequent service to and from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (often called Mo Chit Mai หมอชิดใหม่), with bus connections to all the northern and northeastern provinces. Sleeper trains with ordinary fans that were affordable were replaced by air-conditioned trains. Unfortunately, is it cheaper to fly now, a one-way ticket by sleeper train with airconditioning is now almost 1,000 baht for one way. The distance from Sisaket to the capital city Bangkok driving the 226 highway is 570 km. It's always wise to buy your train tickets a few days before traveling.
