Through its exhibitions and programs, Palm Springs Air Museum in Palm Springs, California, educates visitors on the role of air power in preserving American liberties. Supported by volunteers, many of whom are war veterans and serve as docents, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit leases from the city 17 acres abutting Palm Springs International Airport, on which it has built and maintains a visitor center and collection of hangars.

In addition to aircraft displayed inside and out, exhibitions include vintage vehicles (including the Willys Jeep); models of planes and ships; turrets and engines; military uniforms, medals, arms, and survival gear; reconnaissance cameras; photographs, drawings, and paintings (including murals); documentary coverage accompanying items grouped in topics; and memorabilia, including 1940s-era wedding gowns made from silk and nylon parachutes.

On Saturdays, the museum opens the cockpit of one of its aircraft (selected in rotation) so that visitors can sit at the controls and pose for pictures, while docents are on hand to provide historical background and answer questions. Also on Saturdays, the museum offers a one-hour lecture presentation on a specific topic. Past lecturers of note include astronauts Walter Schirra and Sally Ride.

Beginnings

Dated January 5, 1994, the Organizational Certificate of Incorporation for Palm Springs Air Museum was signed by Harold N. (”Pete”) Madison, Charles H. Mayer, and Bill Byrne — the former two being members of the city’s airport commission. A former P-38 pilot, Madison contacted his friend, Robert J. Pond, a Navy Air Corps World War II veteran, who had been collecting and rebuilding warbirds and classic cars and helped established the Planes of Fame East Museum (closed in 1997) in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.[1] After community leaders and enthusiasts raised $3.5 million, they leased a 10-acre parcel of land in September of 1994.[2] The museum opened on Veterans Day (November 11) in 1996.

Hangars

The museum encompasses five themed hangars:

The Pacific Hangar highlights include a Pearl Harbor diorama with narration by television journalist Tom Brokaw; ship and submarine models; an interactive, lighted map; and a tribute to USO-tour icon Bob Hope, who not only maintained a home in Palm Springs but also actively participated in local philanthropic causes.

The European Hangar showcases tributes to the Tuskegee Airmen and women in aviation (Palm Springs Air Museum Productions premiered its “Women in Aviation” documentary film on PBS in March of 2023).[3] Also in this space is a walk-in F-16 Fighting Falcon flight simulator.

The B-17 hangar houses the museum’s largest aircraft: a Boeing B-17G bomber (“Miss Angela”), measuring just under 68 feet in length and with a wingspan of 103 feet 9 inches, that is available for interior tours. The hangar further encompasses the museum’s Victory Canteen café.

The Korea/Vietnam Hangar includes a “Presidents Who Served” exhibition and display of more than 1,000 POW/MIA bracelets, accompanied by access to an index, prisoner-of-war videos, and digital articles.

The F-117A Hangar shelters the museum’s Lockheed Martin F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter “Black Devil” and provides a War on Terror timeline beginning September 11, 2001.

Visitor Center

Palm Springs Air Museum’s visitor center includes a gift shop; a theater showing documentary films throughout the day and incorporating display cases of model planes; and an upper-level resource center that includes flight-simulator stations and more than 12,500 books, magazines (including every issue of Life magazine from 1936 through 1972 and bound copies of Time magazine from 1930 to 1937), DVDs, and video interviews with veterans (an ongoing project involves collecting oral histories that are then sent to the U.S. Library of Congress).
