Newcastle United announced on April 11 the extension of Joelinton’s contract, securing the Brazilian midfielder’s services for the foreseeable future at St. James’ Park under an undisclosed “long-term” deal.
The 27-year-old Brazil midfielder was one of the heftiest purchases by the pre-PIF ownership, arriving in Tyneside before the Saudi contingent did and expected to score goals from a forward position instead of eating the whole pitch as a box-to-box midfielder.
Joelinton has transitioned from a forward to a more influential box-to-box midfield role under Eddie Howe, who was the main catalyst for the South American reinvention after a tough start to his days in England.
Since then, JoJo has been integral to the team’s recent achievements, including a run to the Carabao Cup final and clinching a spot in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
After joining NUFC from Hoffenheim in 2019 for a then-record fee for the club, Joelinton has made 179 appearances and scored 25 goals. His improvement under Howe also earned Joelinton international recognition, culminating in a goal-scoring debut for Brazil in June 2023 in a game against Guinea.
Joelinton expressed his optimism for the future with the club, stating, “I feel great. I feel very happy and my family is happy.”
Howay Joelinton!
