What a great Cuban/Columbian restaurant! My mother and I arrived today (Sat) right before the lunch rush. FYI, if you're dining in, you seat yourself. The server was so helpful and kind and offered a lot of helpful information and suggestions, since this was our first visit. TIP: the menu posted on their website is old and some of the items like the Chorizo Burger are no longer offered. I thought I prepared by studying that menu, but .. it was the wrong one! :-) Anyway, after some help from the server, I went with the Columbian Dinner, with Picadillo beef, a fried egg, and sautéed vegetables and the Savory Tostone as my sides. I had no idea what a Tostone was, but the server explained it was plantains that were twice fried. My mother ordered a Picadillo beef bowl, without the bell peppers and cilantro. Everything was SO good. The Tostone was crunchy and went so well with the beef and rice. Warning for all you picky eaters, the beef does have some seasoning and olives cooked in it, but olives are like my favorite thing ever, so I thought it was fantastic. Since I had told the server I liked spicy food, she brought me a cup of their Habanero sauce. She said a little goes a long way, so at first I was nervous, barely dipping one fork prong in it. I eventually realized though, it was spicy, but not as hot as my mother-in-law's food, which is basically like eating hellfire and brimstone. Still, anyone who has trouble with spicy food should be careful with the Habanero sauce! Another tip, when you finish eating, you go up to the cashier when you're ready to pay. I was kinda waiting on a ticket or something, but you don't have to do that here. Highly recommend Hector's Kitchen!!

Hidden gem alert. I don't know how I never knew about this place but I found it recently and I'm glad I did. Old school lunch counter vibes with a limited menu of a few things that they do really well, the burger being the main attraction. Pro tip on that burger: don't order a double. It's too big. The single burger is a substantial portion and will do the job of filling you up no matter how hungry you are. Plenty of indoor seating, private parking lot, near the airport, and the place is run by an older couple who have apparently been in business here for decades, perfecting the art of burger making. If you're doing a tour of local burger joints or you're near the airport looking for some real food, this place needs to be on your radar. Don't be hungry in this area and pass it by.

What they're known for:

While I'm the Promised Land, I asked my little sister where I should eat and without much hesitation she said Debris. And also instructed me on what to get. I made my way downtown and was warmly greeted (this is the South after all) and told to sit wherever I wanted. The very adorable waitress came over and took my drink order, and when she returned, I told her this was my Virgin Voyage. She began to tell me about specials but I said my sister said I should order: "The Bowl" and I should get the Fish Of The Day (lucky for me it was Red Fish) fried or blackened (I chose the ladder) with Collards and Cheese Grits and a side of Fried Okra. The adorable waitress said she's correct, she has been here before. My food arrives and it is a lot even by Southern Meat And Three standards. I dive right in and I'll Be DAMNED (in my Florida Evens Voice) it was delicious! My first thought was "those Greens taste like Miss Emma Mae been cooking all day!" My second thought was "this is the South so it could be some guy named Brian who's been cooking with his MeMa since he was six". Again I can't accurately express how wonderfully delicious that bowl of was during my visit. As I tried my best to subdue the moans coming out of me, the waitress approached and asked how is the food. I relayed it is delicious. She said "I know right! Our Chef is Brian, The Whitest name I know but he can cook!" Yes, I told her about my clairvoyance and she thought it was cute and funny. My comment not me. Another spot with that Old Mobile feel! I will be back on my next trip home.

4. Payne's Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain

Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt

Scottsboro, AL

What they're known for:

There is something wrong with our family. We can go all summer without an ice cream craving, then winter comes and we eat it by the bucket. Nobody likes the same thing, so Payne's is a blessing because their flavour varieties are a mix of fun modern faves and classic loves (they even have rum raisin). And their topping seem endless. The people are great too. Always friendly, right across from the courthouse, and the food is as good as the desserts. A mix of classic soda fountain and 50s diner! I love the time warp and the fact I can still get in and out quickly.

Food is always great. We always eat in rather than take out. The staff is friendly and we like the fact that the decor inside is basic. It's the great food that keeps us coming back. A couple suggestions for the staff. Remember the importance of keeping the floors swept, tables clean, drink area clean and trash emptied when full. Keep the AC on during the warm months. We love you Mr. Fred!

Hot bar food selection is awesome!!! On any weekday, there are about 5 different meats, numerous vegetables and casseroles, cornbread muffins (plain or Mexican), delicious tea or soft drinks. The noon hour is busy, busy, so parking is hard to find. Kitchen closes around 2 or 3:00 pm. The store, meat market and wine shop is open much later.
