KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  1. India lifted the T20 World Cup 2024
  2. The Men In Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final
  3. This is India's second T20 World Cup title
It was a triumphant T20 World Cup campaign as India finally ended their long wait to claim an ICC trophy after 11 years. The Men In Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs as Rohit Sharma led India to their second T20 World Cup title.
Emotions were pretty high as India was into their second ICC final within seven months after the disappointing ICC ODI World Cup final last year and there was no room for any kind of mistakes. Virat Kohli once again proved his class as his 59 ball 76 set the perfect stage for the Indian bowlers.
Hardik Pandya’s brilliant spell restricted South Africa to 169 as the Kensington Oval Barbados erupted in joy. Virat Kohli now has won every possible ICC trophy in the white ball format with a winning medal each in the Champions Trophy, ICC ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup.
But the 35 year old hasn’t tasted success in the World Test Championship yet, the new title in the long format introduced by ICC back in 2019. India reached the final on both occasions but went on to lose against New Zealand and Australia respectively.
Now Virat will have another shot at getting a hand at that coveted trophy as India are currently sitting top of the WTC standings. During the T20 World Cup celebrations in the Indian dressing room, Rahul Dravid reminded Virat that he still has a job to do. He said to the Indian batter, “All three whites ticked off. One red to go. Tick it.”
Alongside Virat, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja too hung up their boots from the shortest format and will now concentrate on the WTC trophy which has eluded them for a while.
Virat did guide India to the top of the ICC Test rankings during his captaincy stint. But the WTC trophy will be the last feather in his cap which would further reestablish his authority in the long format. India's next assignment will be a two match home Test series against Bangladesh.
