Creators

YouTube, Instagram, SoundCloud, and other online platforms are changing the way people create and consume media. The Verge's Creators section covers the people using these platforms, what they're making, and how those platforms are changing (for better and worse) in response to the vloggers, influencers, podcasters, photographers, musicians, educators, designers, and more who are using them. The Verge’s Creators section also looks at the way creators are able to turn their projects into careers — from Patreons and merch sales, to ads and Kickstarters — and the ways they’re forced to adapt to changing circumstances as platforms crack down on bad actors and respond to pressure from users and advertisers. New platforms are constantly emerging, and existing ones are ever-changing — what creators have to do to succeed is always going to look different from one year to the next.

Lofi beats to battle royale to.

The iconic Lofi Girl is now in Fortnite — or, at least, her room is. A new Fortnite map lets you run around the bedroom as if you were in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, collecting music notes and sneaking a look at what’s under the bed. It’s unsurprisingly pretty chill, except for some of the platforming sequences.

This plagiarism verdict could be bad news for AI companies.

A Luxembourg court found that Jeff Dieschburg’s “Turandot” painting — a near like-for-like copy of an image taken by photographer Jingna Zhang — violated copyright by referencing Zhang’s work without consent or attribution.

While this case isn’t directly connected to her anti-AI efforts, Zhang said the ruling is a win for individual copyright protection “in time of AI where our rights seem to be quickly eroding.”

Another Spotify podcast exec is leaving.

Julie McNamara, head of podcast studios, announced her departure on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. The company has seen a steady stream of exits as it pulls back on its podcast business.

McNamara’s departure follows deep layoffs at Spotify as well as cuts to its programming as it tries to make the podcasting department profitable.

Adult content creators are outsourcing some work to AI.

Managing an OnlyFans page is a lot of work: you have to make and share content, promote your page, and maintain relationships with subscribers. Business Insider spoke with OnlyFans creators who are using AI tools to do some of that work for them.

OpenAI keeps vaguely teasing GPT-5.

COO Brad Lightcap is speaking at Bloomberg’s Tech conference and was just asked when the next model is arriving. His answer hints that ChatGPT will evolve to act like an agent on your behalf or, at the very least, take on more of a persona.

“Will there be such a thing as a prompt engineer in 2026?” he says. “You don’t prompt engineer your friend.”

A deep dive into an AI content farm.

Product reviews attributed to AI-generated authors have appeared on sites for the The Los Angeles Times, Us Weekly, and many other outlets, according to a new report by Futurism.

The content was produced by AdVon Commerce, a digital marketing firm that was behind the Sports Illustrated and Gannett and USA Today AI debacles, as I reported previously.

IbisPaint now provides a built-in AI ‘sabotaging’ tool.

The digital illustration app has a new AI Disturbance feature that applies a “noise” layer to images to prevent generative AI models from accurately interpreting their art style.

It’s similar to Glaze, one of several tools that artists are utilizing to protect their work from generative AI mimicry, but without the hassle of jumping to separate software — something that may inspire rivaling art apps.

A before and after comparison of an image in IbisPaint with AI Disturbance applied.
Like Glaze, the tradeoff is a slight visual disturbance, but IbisPaint is the first art app I’ve seen to offer such a feature.

AI Met Gala pictures apparently fooled Katy Perry’s mom.

The singer reshared fake AI images of herself at the Met Gala — an event she didn’t attend — along with a text showing her own mom fell for the synthetic image that was circulating. The official Instagram account commented, “a TRUE goddess.” Unclear if the person running it realized it was AI.

Watch out for the AI Met Gala disinformation!

Wait, did Apple tease Zbrush for iPad?

Maxon announced in October that it will bring its beloved desktop 3D sculpting software to the platform this year, but our first look at it comes courtesy of Apple’s “Let Loose” iPad event.

There’s still no word on the release date or pricing. The UI looks really clean though, and it seemingly supports Zbrush’s Sculptris Pro mode, judging by the icon seen up top.

YouTube tests out using AI to skip to the good part.

Some YouTube Premium subscribers can now jump to the most-watched part of a video, only in the YouTube app, by double-tapping the right side of the screen (which normally skips ahead 10 seconds), then tapping a “Jump ahead” button that appears, according to 9to5Google.

To see if you have the feature and enable it, go to Settings > Try experimental new features.

Bluey fans in the US can finally watch that banned ‘mpreg’ episode.

Disney Plus has never hosted “Dad Baby” — likely because it depicts Bluey’s dad Bandit pretending to give birth to his daughter Bingo — but the entire episode is now available to watch online via the official Bluey YouTube channel.

Despite Dad Baby’s cult status, it's actually one of several episodes of the Australian children’s TV show hit with censorship.

Meta is “exploring” algorithm changes on Threads.

Instagram rolled out sprawling changes to how it ranks content this week — and some of those updates could be applied to Threads, says Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

The updates are around how content gets recommended, and Meta says small creators will have a better shot at breaking through.

“What are we doing here?”

Marques Brownlee asks, incredulously, about 14 minutes into his brutal review of the Rabbit R1, after going over the device’s features (or lack thereof).

The question segues into a rant about the miserable trend of new hardware, games, cars, and now “borderline non-functional” AI gadgets that release half-broken, with promises of something better down the line.

What will Instagram’s chatbot creator look like?

At the moment, it seems Meta’s “AI studio” will let people make private and public bots, tuned for duties like personal shopping, trip-planning, meme generation, and helping users “never miss a romantic connection.” (I assume that last one is designed to trawl Craigslist Missed Connections for you.)

Alessandro Paluzzi posted these screenshots in a thread where he’s been tracking the feature since January.

What happens to TikTok?

With the app facing another potential ban from the US, what would divesting it from ByteDance look like? And just how important is the algorithm?

Patreon weighs in on the potential TikTok ban.

The creator subscription platform markets itself as basically the opposite of the algorithm-driven TikTok — but that doesn’t mean Patreon is celebrating the forced divestment from ByteDance.

Banning TikTok just serves to further entrench YouTube and Instagram as the dominant platforms in this industry. But more competition is good for creators–it gives them more leverage and ultimately more control over their businesses.
