Mariya Abate is a copy editor for The Verge and joined the team in 2021. In addition to copy-editing tech news, features, and packages for the site, she assists with live tech event coverage, helps manage The Verge’s style guide, and copy-edits two Verge-owned newsletters, Hot Pod and Command Line.

Before becoming a copy editor, Mariya worked as a social media editor for NBCUniversal-owned news station NBC10 Boston, where she won a Massachusetts Broadcasters Association digital media award for producing a social media newscast called The Recap. Mariya has also worked as a sports writer, covering teams like the NBA’s Boston Celtics, the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, and the Georgia Bulldogs women’s basketball team. Her work has been featured in outlets like USA Today, Heavy.com, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Mariya lives in Atlanta with her husband, Wan, and her daughter, Sanai. In her free time, she enjoys writing short stories, attending concerts, or watching a shameful amount of reality TV.
