Too big for Scotland … so what next for the Old Firm?

Celtic are increasingly dominant over Rangers but both dwarf their rivals in Scotland. With no chance of joining a different league or competing financially with Europe’s elite the future for both clubs seems predictable

It is getting to the time of the year when English football receives a little reminder about the size of Celtic and Rangers. At the end of July thousands of fans will descend on The University of Carolina’s Kenan Stadium to watch a Manchester City exhibition match and at least half of the crowd will be there for Celtic, not City. For another summer friendly tens of thousands will fill Murrayfield when Manchester United play in Edinburgh, and about half of them will be there to see Rangers. There is a reason why invitations are sent to Glasgow for these occasions. The Old Firm are box office in their own right.
