Biography

Notables Project
Johann Struensee is Notable.

J.F. Struensee was born in Germany. He was educated in Halle and worked after that as a physician in Altona. In 1768, Struensee became physician to the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark , and after having travelled with the King, he moved to Copenhagen.[1]
Struensee was very active in the Enlightenment Movement, and while he was able to use his power as maître des requêtes, or privy councillor for the King, he abolished unpaid labor, torture, and censorship of the press. He also instated mandatory smallpox inoculations funded by the state, as well as homes for orphan children where they would be well-cared for.[2]He was the first person to describe foot-and-mouth disease in cattle and how to prevent its spread. Struensee founded a rational form of medicine, wrote a book about pharmaceuticals, and drove out unscrupulous quacks and scam artists. The dilapidated orphanage, the Hiobshospital Altona, the insane asylum, and prisons were all targets for his reform efforts. He also established schools for the training of midwives, physicians, and veterinarians. He also set up vaccination clinics.[3]
He became the lover of Queen Caroline-Mathilde and it is generally accepted that he was the biological father of Princess Louise Augusta of Denmark[4].

Should "livlæge" be in the suffix field? It means physician which was his occupation which is in the biography.
