Sixten Jernberg was a Swedish Cross-Country Skier, winner of four Olympic gold medals and four gold medals in the World Championships.
Sixten was born in Lima parish 6 February 1929 to Karl Gustaf Einar Jernberg and his wife Märta Valentina in Ytternäs.[1] In an interview from 2010, Sixten Jernberg describes his first home as a two-room hovel, half cottage and half cowshed, where one would not even be allowed to keep cows today.[2] There were eventually nine children in the family, although by then they had moved to a better house.
When Sixten was very young, about twelve years old, he started assisting in a blacksmith's shop, bringing the pay home to his mother to help with the household economy. In 1949 after winning a district championship in cross-country skiing, he dropped his other sport, ice hockey, and got seriously into skiing. He worked as a lumber jack, and in addition to this physically demanding job he trained every day by cross-country running or skiing, depending on the season. A regime of such frequent training was not the general model in the early fifties, so Sixten regarded the training camps of the Swedish National Team more as rest and recreation compared to his own habits. He was extremely strongwilled and just never gave up. These traits naturally contributed to his successes. They also led him to compete - and win - when he was unwell. At 81 he admits that his stubborn will may have been detrimental to his health, in the long run.[2]
Sixten Jernberg married Kerstin Marianne Nilsson 2 November 1956.[3] They had three children.[4]
Sixten Edy Jernberg died in Ytternäs, Lima, Dalarna, Sverige 14 July 2012, 83 years old.[5]
