== Functions to try out, refresh ==
== Sister projects ==

I created a [[Template:Main page/sandbox|sandbox]] where the links are in a grid style layout with larger icons and font size to make it easier to navigate. This design is similar to [[commons:]] and [[en:]]. Thoughts on adding to the main template? [[User:Terasail|<span style="color:#088; font-weight:800;">Terasail</span>]][[User talk:Terasail|<span style="color:#000;">'''[✉️]'''</span>]] 16:38, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

:Thanks! That looks great. I've copied the (I think clear improvements) across. [[User:Quiddity (WMF)|Quiddity (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Quiddity (WMF)|talk]]) 19:07, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

== Glossary link ==

The Glossary was moved from Meta here, so the ''[[metawiki:Special:MyLanguage/Abstract Wikipedia/Glossary|Glossary]]'' link should now go to [[Special:MyLanguage/Wikifunctions:Glossary]] instead. [[User:Mormegil|Mormegil]] ([[User talk:Mormegil|talk]]) 07:37, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

== Descriptions for links to other projects ==

At the moment I see above the links to the other projects at the lower end of the main page the following text: "Wikifunctions is part of the non-profit, multilingual, free-content Wikimedia family.". I prefer a more neutral one that is for example used at English Wikibooks: "Wikibooks is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, which also hosts:". When I think about usages of the name family I think about companies who are also sometimes using this name to describe the collaboration of the people and the atmosphere at their company. So I have bad associations with this name as there are companies who are using this name where I do not agree with the way how they treat their employees. What do you think about this alternative name.--[[User:Hogü-456|Hogü-456]] ([[User talk:Hogü-456|talk]]) 20:59, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

:Hi Hogü-456. The same wording is used [[d:|Wikidata]] and [[c:|Commons]]. I understand the perspective about companies who misuse the term, but we've used "family" for the collection of wikis for decades! (see also "sister project"). See also related usages such as [[m:Tree of Wikimedia wikis by language family]]. Personally, I also believe we should be careful to not let people who mis-use a term, take control of that term. I hope that helps. [[User:Quiddity (WMF)|Quiddity (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Quiddity (WMF)|talk]]) 21:18, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

== Background, translations, video, and content ==

'''Background context''': We started the project off with a relatively simple design and content for the Main Page. It was drafted on beta-Wikifunctions (and help requested [[metawiki:Abstract_Wikipedia/Updates/2023-07-20|in the Newsletter]]), with some great additions from @[[User:Terasail|Terasail]], and a lot of inspiration from [[d:|Wikidata]]'s Main Page. I used the [[mw:|MediaWiki]] Main Page structure as the basis for it, because that had semi-recently been overhauled so I knew the code was uptodate, and it was properly translatable, plus the aesthetics were minimal. [I like "minimal" personally, and I didn't want to impose any particular aesthetic on the page]. So far, it's seems to be generally working out. I suggest keeping that overall structure and aesthetic for now [partly because I've been through ''many'' complex and frustrating redesign processes for Main Pages over the years!], but it's up to you.

''Note'': '''Translations''': It is now possible to translate [[Template:Main page]]! Sorry for the delay with marking that up. <small>(I was having trouble getting them to display properly yesterday, and was going to ask for your help today, but @[[User:Ameisenigel|Ameisenigel]] noticed and [https://www.wikifunctions.org/w/index.php?title=Wikifunctions:Main_Page&diff=prev&oldid=36603 fixed] it. Thank you!)</small>

''Question'': '''Video''' (and other possible content additions): I'd like to add [[:File:Wikifunctions in 7 minutes.webm]] (with its translatable captions) into the Main Page, because I've seen many people remark ~"''Oh, the project makes a lot more sense to me after watching that!''". I think it is helpful for people who prefer learning via video/audio to have it easily discoverable, and [[Outreach:]] wiki has done this for years. But I'm not sure where to locate it within the page layout. Do you have any thoughts/suggestions? Perhaps the page needs a new content-block to balance it out (it uses a 2-column design in larger windows), or just generally? E.g. "Communication" as Wikidata has? Or something else?

I hope these notes help. [[User:Quiddity (WMF)|Quiddity (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Quiddity (WMF)|talk]]) 18:57, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

:The sister projects are not translatable but in template references that aren't defined in the call. I'd rather have them marked in [[Template:Main page]] so all translations can be found in one place.

:Since the multilingual projects handle their main pages differently, the Commons, Wikispecies and Meta links need to be translated, whereas Wikidata, Incubator and MediaWiki do not. /[[User:Autom|Autom]] ([[User talk:Autom|talk]]) 19:42, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
::Ah, thank you. {{done}}
::For the labels: I think I've done so in the most efficient way. I was tempted to use the [https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/WikimediaMessages/+/refs/heads/master/i18n/wikimediaprojectnames/en.json wikimediaprojectnames] from translatewiki for the names of the 6 multilingual projects, but as you wrote it's probably best to keep them all in one place to avoid confusion.
::For the links: I've added e.g. <code><nowiki>b:{{int:lang}}:</nowiki></code> to the monolingual projects to save translation effort. There's probably a better way to format that so that the English version doesn't link to <code>''x'':en:</code>, but it should work for now. == Redirect all zh-* variants to zh ==

The Translate extension disables all zh-* variants in favor of zh, as specified in <code>$wgTranslateDisabledTargetLanguages</code> (see [[phab:T39338]]). So if a zh-* variant is selected as the user language, [[Template:Main page/zh]] should be displayed. This can be handled similarly to how it's done on Wikidata (see the source code of [[d:Wikidata:Main Page]]). [[User:Stevenliuyi|Stevenliuyi]] ([[User talk:Stevenliuyi|talk]]) 07:30, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

:But how would you deal with concrete term differences? The terms differ dramatically in China, HK, and Taiwan. [[User:MilkyDefer|<span style="color:#09C">Milky</span>]][[User talk:MilkyDefer|'''<span style="color:#F09">Defer</span>''']] 09:51, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
::LanguageConverter is actually available on all zh translated pages, enabling the use of <code>-{}-</code> syntax and allowing variant changes on pages like [[Template:Main page/zh]]. The issue here is that when the translated page is transcluded, the variant cannot be changed anymore. I think this issue can be tackled by using [[mw:Template:LC zh]], as done on [[mw:Template:Main page/zh]]. Hi, I wish replacing the Wikiversity logo in the template by this logo : <nowiki>[[:File:Wikiversity logo 2017.svg]]</nowiki>. == Favicon ==

Why does the favicon display with a hazy white border? Can this be fixed? (I think I found the file [https://www.wikifunctions.org/static/favicon/wikifunctions.ico, but I can't find that in search].) Cheers, [[User:Edward-Woodrow|Edward-Woodrow]] ([[User talk:Edward-Woodrow|talk]]) 00:25, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

:Yup, there are two related issues with the favicon - outlines tracked at [[phab:T326094]] and similarity tracked at [[phab:T343597]]. Both require some related areas of expertise, hence they haven't been quickly fixed already. -- [[User:Quiddity (WMF)|Quiddity (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Quiddity (WMF)|talk]]) 00:48, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
::Thanks for the info, {{u|Quiddity (WMF)}}. I looked at the .ico file, and it looks like the reason there's a white border is that there's a white border. (I mean, it isn't a weird display problem. We just need to remove a few pixels.) Once someone figures out how to edit the file, we just have to remove the outline; it will display the same on white because the background is transparent, and will hopefully look good on black. :::I've created a high-contrast version of the favicon, without any blurring or white outlines (the blue became slightly modified for contrast reasons), if that's any help. ::::Thanks! Perhaps you could add it to a comment in that Phabricator task? (drag-and-drop within the comment box there should work, or there's a toolbar button to upload). ::::::Fortunately, the changes I made are easily replicate. Just [https://www.wikifunctions.org/static/favicon/wikifunctions.ico download the .ico file], and remove the white pixels (and make a few cosmetic changes) in GIMP or a related application of your choice, and all should be well. == Move "WFI7M" video to own box ==

Should the "Wikifunctions in 7 minutes" be moved to its own box on the main page to stop the unevenness that is there currently. See [[Template:Main page/sandbox]] for an example of how this could look. == Missing new line in "Functions to try out" section ==

Hi, I noticed this minor issue when I translated the page into Japanese. The last line "More functions..." in the "Functions to try out" section is expected to be at the beginning of the line. But there is no new line before the "More Functions". I guess the translate-related tag prevents the new line from being inserted but not sure how to fix it. Could someone check the wiki syntax? == Paver Base ==

Do you want to improve the look, use, and accessibility of your yard for entertaining? Install hardscaping, such as patios and walkways; using a paver base makes this easy!  It's easier for your friends and family to enjoy the outdoors and know where to go when you divide your yard into designated sections. Crushed gravel mixtures are commonly used as paver bases, offering a sturdy platform for interlocking pavers. However, this mixture functions effectively as an outdoor surface all by itself and doesn't require any other building materials.

Because you won't require a jackhammer to remove or rearrange the [https://modutile.com/product/permeable-plastic-pavers-24x24/ paver base] if you change your mind about the design of your walkways, homeowners prefer that it is less permanent than concrete. Unlike larger stones like gravel, the aggregate typically ranges in size from three-quarters of an inch to dust, meaning that when compacted, the material locks together. The Pavestone paver base is available in bags or in larger quantities.

I suggest we switch up some of our "functions to try out", as they are a bit dated and not all the most interesting to try. If you have suggestions of functions that casual users would find interesting to try (including any currently listed), please add them to the list below. --[[User:99of9|99of9]] ([[User talk:99of9|talk]]) 02:53, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
The most popular stone for this purpose is crushed limestone, yet regional variations may occur in the product's composition and hue. For example, designating a specific place for a BBQ grill helps keep smoke from disturbing visitors in a sitting area. A private, romantic area is created by separating the fire pit from the main patio. Using a paver base makes creating these demarcated areas simple and affordable. Because of its size, this material works better than gravel and has an attractive appearance.

Spread the paver foundation until it reaches the tops of the forms once the soil inside the forms is at the proper height. Because it is closely packed together, the finished outdoor surface will be hard, sturdy, and resistant to spreading into the surrounding area. Good idea. We should probably have a page dedicated to function exploration and link to that instead of the catalogue.
Functions that have links on the Main Page should have good performance characteristics. I’m not sure is prime (Z12427) and English cardinal (Z13587) are good candidates, because new users might be inclined to try a large number. Of those listed, I should think remove duplicates (Z13078) would be okay (because setting up long lists would require significant effort from the user) and get English weekday from date (Z13163) might be fine if we could limit the year entered and validate the month and day numbers.
It would be good if the latest suitable function of the week could be included. GrounderUK (talk) 08:44, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
