We suggest that comprehensive research approaches that enact creative and empathic methods of inquiry are best suited to amplify our understanding and inform future design education.

In June 2020, L.L. McKinney, a Black author of young adult novels, began the #publishingpaidme hashtag to create a discussion on how the publishing industry treats Black authors: “what they’re paid. What the marketing is. How the books are treated. How one Black book not reaching its parameters casts a shadow on all Black books and all Black authors, and that’s not the same for our white counterparts.” (Grady 2020) McKinney’s call resulted in an online discussion across 65,000 tweets between authors of all races and the creation of a Google spreadsheet that collected information on over 2,000 titles.
While the conversation was originally meant to discuss the ethical value of book publishing, it became an economic assessment by authors of how publishers treated authors of color and women authors without a full analysis of the data collected. This paper would present the data collected from relevant tweets and the Google database to show not only the range of advances among participating authors split out by their race, gender, sexual orientation and the genre of their work, but also the publishers’ treatment of their titles in terms of deal announcements and pre-pub attention in industry publications. The paper is based on a multi-year project of cleaning and evaluating the collected data to assess what it reveals about the habits and strategies of American publishers in acquiring and promoting titles from a diverse group of authors across the literary, non-fiction, children’s, mystery, romance, and SFF genres.

Objective
To motivate the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) in
students of all ages in english.
What is the way forward
By racing their own cars, children will learn to design and manufacture to their own
objectives, reflecting on their experiences from previous races.
What abilities will the children obtain
The competition requires the children to work in a team and learn to organise their
activities, from initial design, planning, through to manufacture and testing. (Skills:
English, Design, Project management, finance proyect, Team working, leadership,
entrepreneurship, …..)
The activites that they will fulfil are based on their own initiative, with mentors and
ambassadors only overseeing their activities and guiding their actions.
The timescale involved is aimed at promoting reflective learning with the children making
their own decisions, testing the results and learning from the elements that they identify
to need improvement.

The Kid’s Kitcar Association was launched in October 2016.
We are currently developing three kid’s cars with 4 groups of children and the
participation of their families. Two of these cars are using the oficial Goblin and
F24 kits, while the third is based on the research of different chassis designs.
We are presenting these activities to schools and colleges.
We presented our activities at the Maker Fair in Bilbao (november 2016),
promoting the activities of the kid’s kitcar team, so parents and teachers
understood that Children from 9 years of age can manufacture and race their
own cars.

The basis of the challenge across four distinct age groups is the same – to design, build and race a single seat race car.
This starts with 9-11 year olds who build the ‘Goblin’ car from a supplied kit and then create their own bodywork to complete the car. This project can often be the first time these children have used simple hand tools and worked with electricity and motors. The cars and their drivers are then put through a series of tests at one of our regional events with prizes awarded to top cars.
The next stage is IET Formula 24, the senior school class, although also competed in by youth groups, Young Engineers clubs, and even police forces and fire brigades.
The challenge here is to use either a supplied kit car or, using supplied motor and batteries only, to build a car within Greenpower’s safety regulations to compete in a 90 minute race, aiming to be the car that completes the furthest distance within that time on just one set of batteries.
Marketing is an important part of the project, to attract sponsorship from local companies and organisations.
Teamwork is also crucial both throughout the design and build and race, with three drivers required in each race.
IET Formula 24+ for sixth form colleges, University Technical Colleges (UTC’s), Universities and company apprentice or graduate schemes.
Cars are built to the same regulations as IET Formula 24, but the shorter races mean the older drivers can attain higher speeds. Races form part of a 9-round championship with teams attending a minimum of three races a year.

By 2020 the UK will need 830,000 new engineers and 450,000 technicians.
Curriculum enrichment is a key factor in providing young people a real life experience of the application of STEM subjects.
The Audit Commission recommended recognition of Special Educational Needs/Vulnerable pupil’s achievements beyond the academic sphere. Best practice includes providing vocational life skills opportunities for these young people.

90% of our participants at GCSE level want to follow a career in engineering (28% above comparative projects).

100% of primary school teachers said the activity had changed their view on Design & Technology.
27% reported improved grades, 47% reported improved behaviour.

Employees can get involved with mentoring school teams, or as volunteers at local events. The project is very rewarding for volunteers.

Software is designed specifically for the Greenpower projects at school with the chassis and specific modelling figures available.
Slides are prepared for teachers to show students how to use the Solid Edge tools via the development of their Greenpower projects.
Greenpower doesn’t just provide engineers for the automotive industry.
Participating in the Greenpower programme starts developing the recognised professional engineering competences from a Young age.
