EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN Ms Samriti Mona
MEANING OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN TRADITIONAL CONCEPT Exceptional children are those children who deviate from average (normal) children to the extent that they cannot receive classroom instruction in regular school MODERN CONCEPT Exceptional children are those children who differ so much from average (normal) children in their mental, physical, emotional and social characteristics that may require modification of school environment or special (supplementary) educational services in order to develop to their maximum capacity.  Today, emphasis is on ‘environment’ and ‘special services’ and not on ‘special schools’ for almost all types of exceptional children. Ms Samriti Mona

Four Key Terms Impairment= the loss or reduced function of a body part of organ Disability= Exists when an impairment limits the ability to perform certain tasks Handicap= a problem encountered when interacting with the environment *not all children with a disability are handicapped Ms Samriti Mona
History of special education The early history of special education started with  hearing handicapped  In 1555 Spanish monk  Pedro Ponce De Leon  taught deaf children to read, write and speak In 1767  Thomas Braidwood  opened first school for deaf in Edinburgh. In 1778  Samuel Heinicke  developed the Oral method emphasing Lip reading and speaking skill in Germany In 1847 Government of USA opened the school for deaf children which is known as  American School for Deaf. Ms Samriti Mona
Cont…… Valentine Hong  was the first person who start giving education to Blind & he opened the school for blind named as “ The National Institution for Blind” in Paris. Louise Braille  developed the system of Braille Frank Hall developed the Braille type writer Braille printing system was standardized Internationally in 1932. Ms Samriti Mona
Cont…. Education for MR began with the effort of French Physician Dr Itard Decroly in Belgium develop curriculum of MR in 20 th  century and established school throughout Europe. In 1848 the first residential school for MR was opened in Massachusetts. Ms Samriti Mona
Indian Scenario  1 st  school for Hearing Impairment was opened in Bombay in 1885. 1 st  school for VH was opened in Amritsar in 1887. Ms Samriti Mona

MEANING OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN TRADITIONAL CONCEPT Exceptional children are those children who deviate from average (normal) children to the extent that they cannot receive classroom instruction in regular school MODERN CONCEPT Exceptional children are those children who differ so much from average (normal) children in their mental, physical, emotional and social characteristics that may require modification of school environment or special (supplementary) educational services in order to develop to their maximum capacity. Today, emphasis is on ‘environment’ and ‘special services’ and not on ‘special schools’ for almost all types of exceptional children. Ms Samriti Mona

History of special education The early history of special education started with hearing handicapped In 1555 Spanish monk Pedro Ponce De Leon taught deaf children to read, write and speak In 1767 Thomas Braidwood opened first school for deaf in Edinburgh. In 1778 Samuel Heinicke developed the Oral method emphasing Lip reading and speaking skill in Germany In 1847 Government of USA opened the school for deaf children which is known as American School for Deaf.
