M8D2: Ending a Deviant Career Upon successful completion of this activity, students will be able to: Identify ethical problems faced by individuals or communities and identify effective solutions Acquire a basic understanding of how to apply theories of deviance to their own personal and professional experiences Explain and critically evaluate contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice As you read part VIII of the textbook, listen to the podcast, and watch the YouTube video, think about how ending a deviant career is relatively easy for some, while for others, it is extremely difficult or even impossible. Think about Iceberg Slim’s description of his pimping career slowly winding down and ultimately fizzling out, while the prostitutes in Chapter 47 had to enlist law enforcement, who sometimes refused to help them, in order to escape their deviant careers. Also, consider ascribed deviance—people who are considered deviant because of some physical characteristic, such as the woman battling obesity (think about the YouTube video “Do You Still Feel Mentally Fat?”), diagnosis (Chapter 49), or Muslim-Americans, following the events of September 11, 2001. For these people, think about the serious changes in physical state and/or location they would need to make to escape their deviant identities. Think about the episode of “ Lockdown” we watched in Module 6 and the challenges associated with trying to shed the identity of a Mexican Mafia member? After reading Chapters 47 and 49, listening to “ Pimp Anthropology” and watching the YouTube Video, “Do you still Feel Mentally Fat?,” discuss how power and social status relate to the process of exiting a deviant career. Are there some deviant labels that come with more or less social status and power than others? Discuss how factors like the legal system, gender, race and disability impact the process of separating from one’s deviant career. Can you think of any ways educators, lawmakers, parents or public agencies can make exiting from a deviant career easier? .

Each of the first six sections of this text is organized to facilitate the process of learning about workplace diversity. Sections begin with learning goals and an introduction to the material that follows. Next, we provide an exercise on experiences that will help you to actively participate in the learning process by considering some new perspectives on diversity that are intended to challenge your knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about differences. Because diversity is an interdisciplinary topic, the essays and cases that follow were written by experts from business, psychology, anthropology, economics, and sociology. These articles are followed by additional opportunities for active learning: discussion questions, Diversity on the Web, and Writing Assignments. To provide linkages, each of these six sections ends with a unifying case and a set of integrative questions that cut across the articles in that section. The seventh section is intended to connect all of the course material together by providing three options for a capstone learning experience.

Often, we begin a diversity course by asking the question: “Who in this room is prejudiced? Raise your hand.” As expected, only a couple of students are willing to join the instructor and admit that they have some prejudices! At the end of the semester, we ask the same question and almost every hand in the room is raised. Why does this always happen? We have been socialized by family, society, and the media to think that prejudice is always negative, so it is easier to deny it. Then, why do most students raise their hands at the end of the semester? Because they now realize that everyone treats some people differently than others. It is very natural to prefer people like ourselves. Think about your friends. While they may be of mixed races and genders, are they all close to your age? Are there any people with a handicap in the group, and so on?
Basic to understandingthis text Section I is clarification of some terminology that is often used interchangeably in everyday conversation. Prejudice is a preconceived evaluative attitude based on a person’s social group membership. Prejudices can come from many sources such as our socialization, our peers, our life experiences, and especially the media and it can be positive, negative, and neutral. Executive Summary
In the aftermath of recent corporate scandals, managers and researchers have turned
their attention to questions of ethics management. We identify five common myths about
business ethics and provide responses that are grounded in theory, research, and
business examples. Although the scientific study of business ethics is relatively new,
theory and research exist that can guide executives who are trying to better manage
their employees' and their own ethical behavior. We recommend that ethical conduct be
managed proactively via explicit ethical leadership and conscious management of the
organization's ethical culture.
The twenty-first century has brought corporate eth-
ics scandals that have harmed millions of employ-
ees and investors, and sent shock waves through-
out the business world. The scandals have
produced "perp walks" and regulatory backlash,
and business ethics is once again a hot topic. Ac-
ademics and managers are asking: What caused
the recent rash of corporate wrongdoing, and what
can we do, if anything, to prevent similar trans-
gressions in the future? Perhaps because everyone
has opinions about ethics and personal reactions
to the scandals, a number of pat answers have
circulated that perpetuate a mythology of business
ethics management. In this article, we identify sev-
eral of these myths and respond to them based upon
knowledge grounded in research and practice.
Myth 1: It's Easy to Be Ethical
A 2002 newspaper article was entitled, "Corporate
ethics is simple: If something stinks, don't do it."
The article went on to suggest "the smell test" or "If
you don't want to tell your mom what you're really
doing . . . or read about it in the press, don't do it.''̂
The obvious suggestion is that being ethical in
business is easy if one wants to be ethical. A fur-
ther implication is that if it's easy, it doesn't need
to be managed. But that suggestion disregards the
complexity surrounding ethical decision-making,
especially in the context of business organizations.
Ethical Decisions Are Complex
First, ethical decisions aren't simple. They're com-
plex by definition. As they have for centuries, phi-
losophers argue about the best approaches to mak-
ing the right ethical decision. Students of business
ethics are taught to apply multiple normative
frameworks to tough dilemmas where values con-
flict. These include consequentialist frameworks
that consider the benefits and harms to society of a
potential decision or action, deontological frame-
works that emphasize the application of ethical
principles such as justice and rights, and virtue
ethics with its emphasis on the integrity of the
moral actor, among other approaches.^ But, in
the most challenging ethical dilemma situations,
the solutions provided by these approaches con-

Can you identify any principles of justice which are being or may be violated by participants in the fast-fashion industry? What principles are violated by the corporate decision-makers? By the employees? By the consumers?
As demonstrated in the film, some economists argue that conditions in garment factories, bad as they may be, are better opportunities for workers in “developing” countries than they would have otherwise. After watching this film, do you buy this argument? Even if the argument is true, does that mean that conditions should not be improved? How are women’s rights particularly affected?

Outside of the devastating destruction of the hurricane, the aftermath exacerbated the spread of cholera. Polluted water, sewage over flow, and the population relocated to living in close proximity contributed to the rapid spread of cholera. If left untreated cholera can be deadly. Proper sewage disposal and clean water is the best method to prevent the spread of this disease.
Roughly, 14,000 cases of cholera were reported after hurricane Matthew. The International Medical Corps provided aid in the treatment of cholera. "We also supported Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population’s (MSPP) oral cholera vaccination campaign, through which approximately 729,000 people were vaccinated. We provided operational support for the campaign, including payment and logistics for vaccinators, monitoring and evaluation capacity. In addition, we are operating seven mobile medical units focused on reaching remote and isolated communities, traveling by foot, canoe, and any means necessary to deliver health care and vital relief supplies.In addition to our Emergency Response Team’s Hurricane Matthew activities, our Haiti Country Team continues to implement ongoing health, nutrition, and WASH programs in Nord, Nord-este, Artibonite, and Ouest departments.(IMC, 2017)."
Other organization such as the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Military, the PanAmerican Health Organization, and the Center for Disease Control, sent medical supplies, clear water, and monetary funds to contributed to rebuilding the country. The United European Nations sent similar resources. All of the above organizations responses were appropriate. Sending medical supplies and medical professionals to aid in protecting the population of Haiti was effective in slowing the infection rates. The loss of hospitals were offset by the monetary and military support deployed. Four years later Haiti is still rebuilding from this devastating disaster.

Dan was a protestant minister, and Jane’s deceased husband had been a protestant minister. Both had lost their spouses. Jane’s first husband had suffered a catastrophic cerebral aneurysm 2 years earlier. Dan had conducted the funeral service for Jane’s husband. Dan’s wife had died of terminal cancer a little over a year earlier. Dan’s first wife had been a school counselor; Jane was a school teacher. Both had children in college. They shared a love for travel. Dan was retired but continued part-time employment, and Jane planned to continue teaching to qualify for retirement. Both were in great health and had more than adequate health benefits. Within the year they were married. Summer vacations were spent snorkeling in Hawaii, mountain climbing in national parks, and boating with family. After 7 years, Dan experienced major health problems: a quadruple cardiac bypass surgery, followed by surgery for pancreatic cancer. Jane’s plans to continue working were dropped so she could assist Dan to recover and then continue to travel with him and enjoy their remaining time together. Dan did recover—only to begin to exhibit the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. One of the early signs appeared the previous Christmas as they were hanging outdoor lights. To Jane’s dismay, she noted that Dan could not follow the sequential directions she gave him. As time passed, other signs appeared, such as some memory loss and confusion, frequent repeating of favorite phrases, sudden outbursts of anger, and decreased social involvement. Assessments resulted in the diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease. Dan was prescribed Aricept, and Jane began to prepare herself to face this new stage of their married life. She read literature about Alzheimer’s disease avidly and organized their home for physical and psychological safety. A kitchen blackboard displayed phone numbers and the daily schedule. Car keys were appropriately stowed. It was noted that she began to savor her time with Dan. Just sitting together with him on the sofa brought gentle expressions to her face. They continued to attend church services and functions but stopped their regular swims at their exercise facility when Dan left the dressing room naked one day. Within the year, Jane’s retired sister and brother-in-law relocated to a home a short walk from Jane’s. Their intent was to be on call to assist Jane in caring for Dan. Dan and Jane’s children did not live nearby so could only assist occasionally. As Dan’s symptoms intensified, a neighbor friend, Helen, began to relieve Jane for a few hours each week. At this time, Jane is still the primary dependent-care agent. She prides herself in mastering a dual shower; she showers Dan in his shower chair first, and then, while she showers, he sits on the near.

As time passed, other signs appeared, such as some memory loss and confusion, frequent repeating of favorite phrases, sudden outbursts of anger, and decreased social involvement. Assessments resulted in the diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease. Dan was prescribed Aricept, and Jane began to prepare herself to face this new stage of their married life. She read literature about Alzheimer’s disease avidly and organized their home for physical and psychological safety. A kitchen blackboard displayed phone numbers and the daily schedule. Car keys were appropriately stowed. It was noted that she began to savor her time with Dan. Just sitting together with him on the sofa brought gentle expressions to her face. They continued to attend church services and functions but stopped their regular swims at their exercise facility when Dan left the dressing room naked one day. Within the year, Jane’s retired sister and brother-in-law relocated to a home a short walk from Jane’s. Their intent was to be on call to assist Jane in caring for Dan. Dan and Jane’s children did not live nearby so could only assist occasionally. As Dan’s symptoms intensified, a neighbor friend, Helen, began to relieve Jane for a few hours each week. At this time, Jane is still the primary dependent-care agent. She prides herself in mastering a dual shower; she showers Dan in his shower chair first, and then, while she showers, he sits on the near.

The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome back to Bristol Roy Millard, of APM’s Assurance Interest Group on 9 July 2024, to talk about project reviews and hopefully answer all your questions.
Roy outlined his extensive career and his experience in setting up the APM’s Assurance Specific Interest Group, as they were known then.
Using Mentimeter, he asked a number of questions of the audience about their experience of project reviews and what they wanted to know.
Roy discussed what a project review was and examined a number of definitions, including APM’s Bok: “Project reviews take place throughout the project life cycle to check the likely or actual achievement of the objectives specified in the project management plan”
Why do we do project reviews? Different stakeholders will have different views about this, but usually it is about providing confidence that the project will deliver the expected outputs and benefits, that it is under control.
There are many types of project reviews, including peer reviews, internal audit, National Audit Office, IPA, etc.
Roy discussed the principles behind the Three Lines of Defence Model:, First line looks at management controls, policies, procedures, Second line at compliance, such as Gate reviews, QA, to check that controls are being followed, and third Line is independent external reviews for the organisations Board, such as Internal Audit or NAO audit.
Factors which affect project reviews include the scope, level of independence, customer of the review, team composition and time.
Project Audits are a special type of project review. They are generally more independent, formal with clear processes and audit trails, with a greater emphasis on compliance. Project reviews are generally more flexible and informal, but should be evidence based and have some level of independence.
Roy looked at 2 examples of where reviews went wrong, London Underground Sub-Surface Upgrade signalling contract, and London’s Garden Bridge. The former had poor 3 lines of defence, no internal audit and weak procurement skills, the latter was a Boris Johnson vanity project with no proper governance due to Johnson’s pressure and interference.
Roy discussed the principles of assurance reviews from APM’s Guide to Integrated Assurance (Free to Members), which include: independence, accountability, risk based, and impact, etc
Human factors are important in project reviews. The skills and knowledge of the review team, building trust with the project team to avoid defensiveness, body language, and team dynamics, which can only be assessed face to face, active listening, flexibility and objectively.
