Les choristes (2004)
Life is beautiful 2.0
I heard a song on the radio a few days ago, BENNETT - Vois sur ton chemin. Looked it up on youtube, listened to it non stop, left a comment, got a reply by a random German person saying that it's the soundtrack of movie that is a great movie. And here I am. If this isn't the epitome of internet I don't know what is. A few random acts led to me discovering this masterpiece!
Beautiful film, great actors and score. Its setting really brought me back to Life is Beautiful. So happy to have seen this, and it will forever stay with me. Even at our worst maybe we can create something beautiful, that is the message of this film for me.
Irena's Vow (2023)
Schindler meets Parasite
Went in blind and came out speechless. Had no idea it was a true story. So strong and compelling. The story is quite simple really. Schindler's List meets Parasite is the first thing that came to my mind when the movie ended.
The main character is so well cast, she tells the whole story with her eyes alone. Dougray Scott plays it very well, hadn't seen him since Mission Impossible 2! Overall I can't think of anyone that didn't convince me. I wouldn't cut any scene to make it shorter. Very gripping score as well.
6.3 does not do this film justice, believe me. I just hope this film will get more attention somehow.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Much better than expected!
Wow, what a thrill!! Old school fun movie night, edge of your seat action, over much to quickly.
I, like many others here, didn't have high hopes for this one going in. But oh boy did it deliver and more. You just don't want it to end, that's a hallmark of a good movie in my book.
It all feels so real, which adds to the excitement overall. Not a word spoken too much, beautiful scenery and great action scenes. In a CGI world that is the world today, it's actually a breath of fresh air to see them go through the trouble of actually flying.
Hats of to all the team working on this film, they created a instant classic.
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)
Jaw dropped
I'm not easily blown away by movies, but this one had me speechless and in awe from start to finish. I can't figure out why. Is it just a fluke? Or is it everything combined? I think the latter. It grabs you from the get go and doesn't let go. Everything feels high end about this production, and that is a surprise. The acting, camera work, set design, script...top notch. Especially for a straight to dvd picture. Honestly I didn't take Scott Adkins seriously until now. How he conveys the pain he is going through is beyond acting. If this movie were to come out now in 2024 it would smash the box offices for sure. I mean the way the unisols are introduced, super cool, the gripping first scene, JCVD as the bad guy and so on. Thank you for this surprise of a master piece.
De uskyldige (2021)
The new Meryl Streep
Was watching this movie with a friend of mine, we are both huge in to movies over 30 years. All we were talking about was the performance by Alva. SIMPLY STUNNING! I was convinced that Anna was a real autistic girl. I hope this movie will get the recognition it deserves. As for the story, it's not your straight forward everyday thriller/horror. There is room for your imagination to fill in the gaps, which is an oddity nowadays.
Reservation Dogs (2021)
So good it hurts
I the real question that comes to mind; Are they even aware of the masterpiece they are creating?! Or could it be just as simple as keeping it real? By far the realest show I have ever seen, the only thing that would come close is 'The Grizzlies'. "Life is comedy from afar and a tragedy up close". So funny at times, well written and great acting. Instantly fell in love with Willie. Solid 10 any day of the week.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Best opening sequence ever
Have to say I was blown away by the opening scenes, one of the best I have ever seen. It's an introduction of biblical scale, more storyline development in the opening 5 minutes than in most 2 hour movies. Fantastic mood/scene setter.
Loki (2021)
How come everyone is a comedian?
It's not the best show ever but certainly has the cinema feel, high quality storyline and good actors. My only complaint is why when marvel is doing tv everyone is a comedian all of a sudden? It's starting to get insulting to me as the viewer. It's so obvious that it had to have been some sort of corporate meeting decision; let's do jokes like sitcoms because that's what tv is!? Ease of with the desperate attempts to write jokes in every scene. Otherwise a solid 8 and a great exploration of the Loki character.
Ragnarok (2020)
Powerful
Had wet eyes at the end of episode 1 and was left blown away. It's powerful stuff. I don't know how they do it but lately it seems everything coming out of Norway is just mind blowing good goose bumps stuff. This one is no exception. Great camera work, character exploration and writing.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Really bad
This movie is so bad that I am wondering what the decision making process is like in Hollywood for making and releasing a movie. Not funny at all, which is hard to achieve with this cast. Is everyone just surrounded with 'yes -men'? Not one person in the whole process said "This is complete garbage!"?
They should have made it more like a 'where are they now' docu, which it basically is. Lack of creativity is really shocking to be honest. Everyone from the '80's movie is brought out for 5 sec, is that supposed to be funny?
What made me smile just for a second was sadly quickly followed by a cringe worthy appearance. The introduction of General Izzi for me was the slightly funny bit, but the following dance by said general makes you cry. Leslie Jones, I love her, is just a mismatch for this cast as are Morgan Freeman and Wesley Snipes. They appear like a cartoon sketch.
On the whole I'm hugely disappointed, an obvious money motivated release.
WandaVision (2021)
They played a dangerous game
The rating of this show as it stands is a direct result of the first 3 episodes. I, like everyone else was like; what in the world is this!? Again only the first 3 episodes. I had basically given up, but forced myself to watch the 4th outing. Oh boy was it worth the wait. It went from a joke to a solid 10 in a couple of minutes. So yes I think it's a dangerous game to play by the studio, even though you somehow felt that this couldn't be 'it'. I think a lot of people have given up. What a shame, because after ep. 4 you just know it's going to be a great show, high quality storyline and great actors. Can't wait for the next one.
Gisaengchung (2019)
A real surprise.
Honestly I was reluctant to watch this movie for a long time. Because I felt Joker should have cleaned up at the Oscars. But after seeing this I fully understand the academy's decision. What a masterpiece of storytelling. It simply has every ingredient a perfect movie needs. Excitement, laughter and crying it's all in there.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Encore!
Simply brilliant, as in brilliant simplicity. As is evident from the other reviews this isn't for everyone. It's not your typical blockbuster blow them up Hollywood series. I love the character building, the score, the filming locations and the cast. You just get so involved with every single character that I reluctantly watched the last episode not wanting it to end. And what an ending. It's definitely a 'thinker'. I want more!
1917 (2019)
Could have been so much more
I just didn't get it. It's hard to see where the 100 million budget went to. I expected so much more than this film delivered. Lack of story, character building and action becomes painfully obvious when the credits roll on, that was it!?
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
The end of Tarantino
I watched this with a friend, we are huge movie fans and Tarantino fans. At the end we looked at each other and simultaneous said "What the hell were they thinking". He (Tarantino) thinks casting big names, making a hype will make it work? No sir, this is end of career, reputation and brain. Total scam of a picture. What were they thinking? How can DiCaprio and Pacino agree to do this to their respected resume. Just for a paycheck? A joke really and a bad one sadly. It's like Tarantino is empty, nothing left. That in it's self is a harsh but true reality after seeing this movie. But how can great actors agree to be in such a bad movie, that is what really baffled us. It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Pacino is a Hollywood clown? DiCaprio is the action star? Pitt plays second fiddle?
I'm not one to think conspiracy but this 7.9 sure smells funny to me, all the 10 star reviews have 1500+ likes, the 5 stars and lower not so much. That's the Hollywood machine working for you I guess.
The Grizzlies (2018)
Speechless
Truly left speechless after the credits rolled on screen. Had no idea this was based on a true story. Send chills down my spine. I cried, laughed, and was shocked. Astonishing performance by the actors. This film deserves so much more exposure than it has gotten. 9/10
Haunt (2019)
Turn the lights off and enjoy.
What a pleasant surprise! Went in completely in the blind, no ad no trailer nothing. And boy did I get my monies worth. Another masterpiece by Eli Roth (although I don't think he can take all the credit). It's been a long time since I've seen such an unpredictable horror flick. Just merciless action, gore and the twists keep on coming like you wouldn't believe. It's always a good sign when you are disappointed when the movie is finished so soon, like I was at the end. Top shelf movie with a B class cast, definitely a recipe for success. It's a bit too soon to call this the horror of the year, especially since horror season is around the corner, but for sure this will make it in my top 5 of the year.
Still (2018)
Beautifully shot, deep story
Much better than expected. It has a calm feel to it but manages to keep you hooked to the end with suspense. Not one word is said to much, bit of a thinker in the end because of it. I just loved how the story unravels. As I'm typing this review I can't help to think about the dept of the story and how it lets the viewer guess about the motives of the main characters. For example: do they take a liking in the blond girl at random or do they want to heal her...? Great camerawork has to be said. It's one of those movies you just wish would get more attention. Magic Moonshine!
Future Man (2017)
DP meets Terminator
Words can not describe how awesome this show is. It has everything! I can't help to think that Deadpool and Terminator had something to do with this masterpiece. It is done right in every possible way. I'm halfway in season 1 but I'm already fearing the end of this show. This shouldn't end! Solid 10/10.
Jean-Claude Van Johnson: Pilot (2016)
I want more!
Great pilot, makes you hungry for more. High quality production in every aspect. It has everything a good show needs; funny/witty, action, romance. I love the camera work, it has a real "feel" to it somehow. There are some good actors which give the show some extra weight and class. But mostly it's JC being awesome in a slightly different (funny) way. Instantly hooked. Would make a good addition to amazon. Maybe to soon to call but could be JC's best acting job ever. I had not dared to dream that this would be this good. Surpassed all my expectations. Of course I might be a little biased having grown up adoring all of JC's work. But I really feel this is the next level for JC. All in all I would love to see more of this show and I think there is definitely potential for it to become a big hitter for amazon.
Blindspot (2015)
Catching and nail biting
Wow can't believe the negative reviews this show is getting! Can't agree with any of them.
Got hooked after the first 10 minutes of the pilot. Pretty original if you ask me. Specially the start on Times Square. I don't want this to end but I need to know where it's going, who she is, who did this to her and so on.
If you require immediate answers then no maybe this show is not made for you. But if you like a ride where you don't know what's coming, when it's coming, who is doing this and so on, then yes this is made for you. The story is compelling. Casting is done great as they didn't cast 'big names' which for me gives it a more believable twist. Acting is convincing and script is non-BS. It's just good entertainment. Can't wait for 2nd season!
