Following on the success of the “10 Years” series which features Thailand and Hong Kong editions among others, comes the latest iteration which sees five Burmese filmmakers coming together to conceptualize on the future they envision for their country. The anthology series of five short films is a visual package of this combined thought space, packaged in stylistic arthouse omnibus which is “10 Years Myanmar”.
Ten Years Myanmar is screening at Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival
The first film is “A City of Bougainvillea” by Thaiddhi. A blossoming love between a young couple sees them enjoying sweet nothings atop the city heights. But there is an uncomfortable silence in the air- for the boy might not even be real. The movie that starts of the anthology is perhaps the most poignant one. A morose and dark take on identity and belonging, which is rife with symbolism and leaves a lot to interpretat.

"The Boy and the Heron" was released in Japan back in July, and it had one of the greatest marketing strategies of all time, in my opinion. There was one poster featuring a close-up drawing of a white and blue heron that had oddly human eyes peeking out from its beak. And that was it. No string of publicity stills, no trailers, no TV spots. Nothing. You had a poster, a release date, and that name Hayao Miyazaki, one of the most beloved filmmakers on the planet supposedly making his final film. The gambit paid off, and the film is doing splendidly in Japan.
I was hoping that this marketing tactic would be adopted around the world, but that isn't the case. We now have a few stills from the movie, like the one seen above, and now, we even have a teaser trailer for Miyazaki's latest. As someone who...

After its strong opening weekend, Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is shaping up to be a historically frontloaded superhero film at the box office, plummeting 69% in its second weekend to $32 million.
Given its mixed reviews and audience reception, analysts and rival distributors were not expecting the third “Ant-Man” movie to make more than $40 million this weekend. But barring a much stronger-than-expected Sunday, this movie will have the largest second-weekend drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the largest drop for any superhero movie with a $100 million-plus opening since the 69.6% drop of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016.
With a 10-day total of $164 million, “Quantumania” should have enough momentum to cross the $200 million mark at the domestic box office. But with such a steep drop it is now questionable whether the film will have enough fuel against stiff March blockbuster competition to even pass the...

Hong Kong protest films “Revolution of Our Times” and “May You Stay Forever Young” will have their British premiere in March at a new film festival organized by artists and culture sector workers who have relocated to the U.K.
Ng Ka-leung, a producer and director of Hong Kong dystopian anthology “Ten Years,” and documentary filmmaker and writer Wong Ching, co-curators of Hong Kong Film Festival U.K. 2022, said the festival is more than just about screening films that can no longer be shown in their hometown due to political changes.
It is organized by Hong Kong Umbrella Community, a U.K.-based body co-founded by Nathan Law, a former Hong Kong lawmaker who is now living in exile in Britain. The inaugural edition of the festival is funded by private donors, but event organizers hoped to raise funds from other sources for future editions.

Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin aren’t just the brains — and brawn — behind “Magic Mike.” They’ve built up their company Free Association into a place to go for innovative storytelling, including the road trip movie “Dog” (which opens on Feb. 18), which they co-directed; the Starz TV series “Step Up: Highwater”; and the thriller “Pussy Island,” which will be Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut.
“I think it’s a good partnership,” says Steven Soderbergh, who is directing “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which Tatum will star in and Carolin wrote. “I think they have a shared sense of people and how the world works.”

“The Falls,” Taiwan’s Oscar contender and a timely drama about the trauma of home quarantine, emerged as the unsurprising winner at the Golden Horse Film Awards in Taipei on Saturday.
And, in a bold decision that has the potential to enrage Mainland Chinese authorities, the prize for best documentary feature was awarded to “Revolution of Our Times.” The film chronicles the brutality of the political crackdown on the streets of Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020.
“The Falls,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, tells the tale of a mother and daughter cooped up in an apartment during a quarantine. It is directed by Chung Mong-hong, who previously directed “Parking” and “A Sun.”
At the award ceremony “The Falls” earned four prizes, including best narrative feature, best original screenplay, best actress and best original score.

Twenty years ago, on July 1st 1997, the UK handed-over sovereignty of Hong Kong back to China, with a fifty years grace period, before Chinese laws would take effect. With this being the case, Shanghai-born Hong Kong resident Wong Kar-wai went to great lengths to ensure his latest work, “Happy Together”, was released before this date, although his reasons may not appear clear at face value.
“Happy Together” is screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival
Tony Leung Chui-wai and Leslie Cheung star as Lai and Ho respectively: a gay couple travelling across Argentina, somewhat lost of direction, winding up in Buenos Aires in low paid jobs. Their hope is to reach the Iguazu Falls in the north of the country, but the lack of funds and the constant bickering in their on-off relationship prevents them from ever reaching a happy ending. As their time in Buenos Aires continues, the pair...

Hong Kong legislators on Wednesday approved an amended law that will allow film censorship on the basis of national security considerations. It does not cover the online screening of movies, though a government minister described that omission as a “loophole.”
The revision to the law is the latest operation to tighten the government grip on civil society, artistic and speech freedoms in the country.
The city’s legislative council — in which there are no opposing forces — amended the Film Censorship Bill by a show of hands to give movie censors the task of vetting content for violations of a draconian national security law written and imposed by Beijing in July 2020.
The National Security Law bans anything that is deemed to be or incite secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces. Under the film censorship amendment, violators screening unauthorized films may face punishments including fines up to $129,000 (Hk$1 million) and three years in prison.

Hong Kong is to introduce a new film censorship law that could send anyone responsible for illegal screenings to jail for up to three years. Offenders could also be liable to a Hk$1 million fine.
The new law is intended to codify national security concerns that were introduced into the city’s film classification ordinance as recently as June.
The moves were announced by the government’s commerce secretary Edward Yau at a press conference on Tuesday.
As well as codifying the Film Censorship Authority’s powers and duties regarding national security, the new law will allow the government to appoint an official representative to the Board of Review and do away with non-official members.
It will also cancel a film distributor or exhibitor’s right to appeal against a board decision if the decision is made on national security grounds.

Kiwi Chow, the Hong Kong-based director of the controversial “Revolution of Our Times” documentary that screened on the penultimate day of the Cannes Film Festival, says he has disposed of his interests in the film.
“Revolution,” which takes its title from a pro-democracy protest slogan, chronicles the popular uprising in Hong Kong that started in mid-2019 and the government’s strongarmed suppression of the movement. Cannes gave the film its world premiere towards the end of the festival and without any fanfare in order to minimize any possible diplomatic reaction that would hurt Chinese filmmakers present at the fest or impact the ongoing events. The public reaction from Beijing has been muted.
Chow said on Thursday, however, that he has sold the copyright of “Revolution of Our Times” to a European distributor. He said he has also disposed of all his footage from the 150-minute picture.
“It’s a kind of risk assessment.

Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” proved to be another highlight in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the person earning real raves is the film’s star, Simon Rex.
American audiences might better know him as Dirt Nasty from the “Scary Movie” franchise of films, but critics have called him “terrific” and “sensational” and said that he has earned his “Uncut Gems” moment for his performance as a washed-up porn star who is trying to groom a younger girl in the art. One Twitter user even suggested that Cannes should award him the Best Actor prize for his work.
“Give Simon Rex the Best Actor award. Sean Baker is a national treasure. I was glued to his twisted red state Americana vision for almost its entire two hours,” critic Jordan Ruimy wrote.

In a late move, the Cannes Film Festival has announced the addition of a new film to its official line-up. The documentary, “Revolution of Our Times,” depicts recent political and social events in Hong Kong, and will play on Friday in a special screening.
Cannes this year is chock full of issue-led programming about climate change, crises in Africa, diversity and equality. Few topics are as pressing or complex as the ideological clash between the liberal west and China’s modern brand of Communist-badged totalitarianism.
The front line in this undeclared war is Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to Chinese control 24 years ago. While the territory was supposed to have been given a “high degree of autonomy” for a period of 50 years, and to have operated under the “one country-two systems principle,” the last few years have seen China’s “comprehensive jurisdiction” introduced and enforced in uncompromising fashion.

In the world of Asian cinema, Hong Kong has cultivated a reputation for punching above its weight. Once producing 300 films a year, the small territory hatched global martial arts superstars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen. It nurtured the visions of auteur Wong Kar Wai and put itself on the map with compelling crime thrillers like “Infernal Affairs” — remade by Martin Scorsese as Oscar winner “The Departed” — and Johnnie To’s “Election.”
These days, however, the Hong Kong cinema scene is getting a disturbing reboot. Beijing’s increasing political control, especially the draconian National Security Law that curtails freedom of expression, passed last June, has accelerated the mounting challenges.
“The Nsl feels like the beginning of the end. Internationally, and even regionally, Hong Kong as a film hub is now in danger,” says San Diego State University professor Brian Hu, whose research has centered on...

Can people with mental illnesses be in a healthy relationship? And once in one, can they sustain that relationship over a period of time, without harming themselves or their partners physically or emotionally? In his follow-up to his debut “A Complicated Story” and to arguably the best segment of the anthology “Ten Years”, director Kiwi Chow asks and attempts to answer all these questions and more.

Well, guys, we did it. After five long, emotionally manipulative weeks, the American Idol Season 19 auditions have come to an end — and no one is more tired than Katy Perry’s cow-print suit. (Rest easy, old friend. Your me-moo-ry will live on forever.)
Let’s start with Sunday’s surprise guest stars, which ultimately yielded polar opposite results: First, Season 18 finalist Francisco Martin dropped by to support his brother (and plug his new single), joining him in harmony for a performance of Season 17 runner-up Alejandro Aranda’s “10 Years.” (Yes, synergy!) Unfortunately, Martin took the lead on this one, which...

Aly & Aj have shared a new performance of their recent single “Listen!!!” from an appearance on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee that airs Wednesday, March 10th, at 10:30 p.m. Et.
“Listen!!!” is a pristine blast of pop-rock with shimmering guitar lines and a rough-around-the-edges bass that adds just the right amount of grit. “Night after night I express what I feared from the start,” Aly & Aj sang on Full Frontal as masked dancers moved on the screen behind them. “That your heart would never listen/I’m feeling like...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

“My Missing Valentine,” a fantasy comedy drama directed by Chen Yu-hsun, won the top prize at the 57th edition of Golden Horse Awards. It collected four further prizes, including best director and best screenplay on Saturday at an in-person ceremony in Taipei.
Best actress and best supporting actress awards both went to the 81-year-old veteran Chen Shu-fang for her performances in “Little Big Women” and “Dear Tenant” respectively. The emotional Chen said this was her first time walking the red carpet to attend the awards ceremony and she had not expected to go on stage twice in one night.
Chen’s “Dear Tenant” co-star Mo Tzu-yi won his first Golden Horse best actor for his performance in the unusual family drama, in which he plays a character looking after the relatives of his deceased boyfriend.

2016 has been very interesting year for all of the sinophone world, with a plethora of very interesting productions, both cinematically (Tharlo) and in terms of controversy (Ten Years). Art-house and Hk action could not be missing, while Derek Tsang directed a very impressive drama (SoulMate).
With a focus on diversity, here are the best Sinophone films of 2016, in random order. Some films may have premiered in 2015, but since they became widely known in 2016, are also included. Films like “The Tenants Downastairs”, “Godspeed” and “The Summer is Gone” seem like films that could have also been included, but since I have not watched them, I could not put them in this list.
1. Ten Years (Ng Ka-leung)
Despite the fact that it was produced on a budget of merely Hk$500,000, with a cast and crew mainly comprised of volunteers, “Ten Years” was one of the most successful films of the last years,...

Omnibus film projects looking at possible future political and cultural changes are somewhat en vogue in South-East Asia at the moment, notably the “Ten Years” series, starting in Hong Kong, going to Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. As yet, a “Ten Years Korea” hasn’t been released, but the Koreans have taken it upon themselves to create their own project, away from the franchise. Featuring a trio of shorts from Ji-young Boo, Yi-kwan Kang and Seo-yoon Kim, “Let Us Meet Now” is a heartfelt plea for better relations between the two Koreas.
“Let Us Meet Now” will screen at Florence Korean Film Festival 2020

Paramount Pictures has landed the spec script “The Aliens Are Stealing Our Weed” with Gina Rodriguez attached to star, sources tell Variety.
“The Eternals” scribe Ryan Firpo penned the script. Rodriguez will also produce under her I Can and I Will banner alongside Kaz and Ryan Firpo’s Badlands. Molly Breeskin will executive produce through I Can and I Will.
The story follows Candice (Rodriguez) and Izzy, two hapless pot growers who, after their entire crop of weed inexplicably goes missing, uncover an alien conspiracy to steal the planet’s marijuana supply.
Sources say studio execs felt the story fell in line with other Paramount comedies like “Anchorman,” “Airplane!” and “Blazing Saddles,” and moved quickly to acquire it.
The project also gives Rodriguez another star vehicle in her development slate after her breakout role on the CW series “Jane the Virgin,” which won her a Golden Globe in 2015.

For a quiet and humble soul, “American Idol” Season 17 runner-up Alejandro Aranda is making a big splash this week. He announced on his Instagram account that, in addition to his sold-out seven-date summer tour that starts on July 8, he will also do a 28-date lineup of concerts in October and November.
Aranda, 25, has also signed with Hollywood Records and has been recording an album. And one of Pomona, Calif., favorite sons just released a new single, “Tonight,” an alt-rock love ballad that he performed on the “Idol” finale. It was co-written by his mentor, Twin Shadow, who made an appearance on the reality competition show as well. Aranda performed a total of seven original songs on the show, more than any other contestant previously. The other titles: “Out Loud,” “Cholo Love,” “10 Years,” “Poison,” “Blesser” and “Millennial Love.” “Tonight” is available to stream and download.

Country cutie Laine Hardy, who is busy recording an album in Nashville, might have taken the show’s title on the 17th season of “American Idol.” But runner-up Alejandro Aranda claimed the hearts of the show’s fans with his soulful singing voice, terrific guitar work and especially the seven original songs that he performed on the show. Hayao Miyazaki needs no special introduction. The Japanese filmmaker, second after Kurosawa to receive the honorary Oscar for his outstanding motion picture achievements, has appealed to a broad international audience, winning many hearts belonging not only to anime enthusiasts. Few times already he has announced his retirement, but none of those announcements proved permanent in effect. It seems he just can’t stop making movies and creativity pulsates in his veins.
The documentarist, Kaku Arakawa, had a rare opportunity to get an insight into the master’s creative process. After meeting the director in 2005, he was allowed to shadow him at work (and even outside the Ghibli studio during more private moments) to register hours of behind-the-scenes material. The only condition was that he had to film all by himself, with no other crew members. The 4-episode TV miniseries “10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki” made for the national Japanese broadcaster Nhk is the result.

The days of “American Idol” being known as a “karaoke show,” as Katy Perry referred to it, are over. And it’s all thanks to Alejandro Aranda.
Even though this 25-year-old musician from Pomona, California didn’t win Season 17 — he came in second place to country singer Laine Hardy — Alejandro’s lasting impression on ABC’s perennial reality TV show will be felt for years to come. Because he stayed true to himself as an artist week after week, we can all expect to see more original songs, more talented musicians and more singer-songwriters in future seasons. And we can’t wait.

Hey, "American Idol" fans. Happy Sunday! Tonight, May 19, 2019 was indeed the big night! Finale night! That's right, guys. This long season finally came to a freaking end tonight, and a winner was revealed. All Of the final three contestants: Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg performed two, new songs. They also took part in some artist collaborations. Tonight's Live finale lasted a freaking, full three hours. That's the first in its history. I guess ABC is a lot more generous with their airtime than Fox ever wanted to be. To kick off the show, Judge Lionel Richie, mentor Bobby Bones and a whole bunch of other people hit up the stage to sing, “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Eventually, the top ten Idol contestants returned to join Lionel on stage. After all of that, Laine Hardy hit the stage to sing his first song of the night, which was, "Home" by Marc Broussard.

Hollywood Week — or “Hell Week,” according to that little devil Ryan Seacrest — continued on Monday’s American Idol, which ended with one contestant threatening (nay, promising!) to pee on the floor. And after sitting through this episode, I could relate.
These poor children were put through the wringer, forced to sing and dance and smile on mere minutes of sleep. They were treated like… like… well, like children in Hollywood, to be honest.
But unlike the episode, which forced the contestants to wait until the last possible moment to learn their fates, we’re going straight to the results:

The clutch of Asian films in this year’s Cannes Official Selection isn’t the biggest ever but may be one of the most anticipated in recent years.
