The Springer Spaniel Louis is in fact Tilda Swinton's dog.
The hotel is the former ancestral home of Julie's mother, Rosalind. As was common in post-war Britain, rising taxes and economic shifts saw many such homes being sold and converted into country hotels as was this one. One of the exceptions was the 19th century ancestral home of Tilda Swinton herself which, having undergone understandable changes, continues to be in the family.
The name of the hotel in the film is "Moel Famau Hall". Moel Famau is a Welsh name whose meaning is not entirely clear, but is sometimes translated as "Hill of Mothers".
On her bedside table (01:05) Julie has a copy of Marion Milner's "On Not Being Able to Paint", a psychoanalytic examination of creativity and its impediments.
Julie places gifts for her mother in a drawer (00:06) including a box of rose and violet creams from Fortnum and Mason.
