Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski’s imaginary friends have a date with Paramount+. Paramount Pictures’ If is set to begin streaming on the platform on July 9 in the U.S. and Canada. International Paramount+ markets will be announced at a later date.
If debuted at No. 1 at the domestic box office in May and has since grossed more than $185 million worldwide.
Written, directed by and starring Krasinski and Reynolds, the film poses the question: Ever wonder where your imaginary friends go when they’re no longer in your brain? The title doubles as both a cryptic description and an abbreviation for “Imaginary Friends.”
The film follows a young girl (Cailey Fleming) who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends, known as Ifs. She embarks on a magical journey to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids, before they disappear.
Steve Carell voices a large purple creature named Blue. In addition to Krasinski,...

The film, released in May, follows a young girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) who’s going through a hard time as her dad (John Krasinski) is in the hospital. “If” was written and directed by Krasinski in a shift in genres for the filmmaker following his hugely successful horror films “A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II.” Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, Bradley Cooper, George Clooney and Jon Stewart all lend their voices to the IFs.
The movie received mixed reviews from fans and critics, it earned a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and 88% audience score.

Would theaters even be operating if not for animated films? It’s a fair question, heavily reinforced by this weekend when “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) combined to gross $105 million.
So far in 2024, animated features have grossed a little under $1 billion, more than 25 percent of the total gross. Take that amount away, it’s hard to imagine most theaters staying afloat. That’s a big increase from 2023, when similar releases made up around 18 percent.
The sixth entry in the “Despicable Me/Minions” franchise grossed about $75 million for the three day weekend, $122.6 million total for five days to take #1 with ease. “Inside Out 2” took second with $30 million, down only 48 percent despite strong new competition. That comes to more than two thirds of the $157 million total.

As Pixar’s sequel unexpectedly becomes the fastest-ever $1bn movie, and with Despicable Me 4 poised to top the box office, film-makers reveal the secrets of their successes – and why adults are the new superfans of family films
Five weeks ago, Hollywood was in the doldrums. A succession of hotly tipped blockbusters – The Fall Guy, Furiosa, If – flopped. The mood was ominous. The last time early summer box-office takings had been so low was in 2000.
Today, considerably more cheerful records are being broken, thanks entirely to children’s films. Three weeks ago saw the release of Inside Out 2, Pixar’s sequel to its 2015 animation about the emotions jostling for supremacy in the head of an 11-year-old girl named Riley.

Families will not stop heading to the cinemas this week as Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 storms into summer with what’s looking like a $110M-$120M 5-day U.S./Canada opening at 4,000 theaters. This as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 remains strong after a third No. 1 weekend, that pic heading to half billion stateside before the week is up.
Already Despicable Me 4 has $25.5M from 20 offshore territories, led by Australia. With the addition of 52 markets on July 3 including Mexico, Spain and Brazil, the pic’s running overseas box office could jump to a total of $75M-$80M by Sunday. Those new markets look to deliver $45M-$50M for the weekend after debuting on July 3 including previews. All in, Despicable Me 4‘s global cume is bound to stand around $200M by Sunday.
DM4 is on a staggered release pattern abroad to take advantage of holiday play.

In the trailer for Prime Video’s Jackpot, John Cena and Awkwafina discover what it would be like if The Purge was real but only for people who play the lottery. Out Aug. 15, the film follows Awkwafina’s Katie — the proud owner of a winning lottery ticket with a bounty on her head — and Cena’s Noel, the amateur jackpot protector tasked with keeping her alive.
Jackpot takes place in 2030, only six years into the future, but it still feels a bit too close for comfort. Based in Los Angeles,...

Awkwafina and John Cena find that winning the lottery is not all it’s cracked up to be in the trailer for the action-comedy movie Jackpot!
The Amazon MGM Studios film from director Paul Feig begins streaming via Prime Video on Aug. 15. Set in Los Angeles in 2030, Jackpot! focuses on Katie (Awkwafina), a struggling actress who wins the lottery without realizing that the state of California grants everyone else until sundown to murder the winner and claim the prize money without consequences. Helping Katie to stay alive is an amateur lottery protection agent (Cena), who gets a cut of the cash if she survives.
“Katie, you won the lottery. Now, anyone with a losing ticket that kills you before sundown gets your money — legally,” Cena explains in the trailer. After Awkwafina replies that this sounds like murder, he clarifies, “Oh, not in California. It’s just a chance at the big time.

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. A decade ago, legendary director Hayao Miyazaki retired, sending Studio Ghibli’s team of animators to seek employment elsewhere. Those were dark, uncertain times for the industry, which explains why veteran Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura picked the word “ponoć” (which means “midnight” in Croatian) for his new studio: He wanted to convey a new dawn for some of the medium’s most talented artists.
No question, the spirit survived in Studio Ponoc’s first feature, “Mary and the Witch’s Flower,” as well as a series of shorts bundled under the title “Modest Heroes.” Anime fans breathed a collective sigh of relief. The magic they’d associated with Studio Ghibli would live on. And then Miyazaki changed his mind and made “The Boy and the Heron”. In an unexpected twist, the artists who’d come up working alongside Miyazaki now found themselves competing with him.

Paul Walker’s scenes in Fast & Furious 7 was done with VFX. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Fast & Furious franchise faced an unexpected and tragic challenge after actor Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner, died in a car accident in 2013. While the actor is still remembered by everyone, his death deeply affected not only the cast and his fans but also the franchise. The filming of the seventh installment was hit with this tragedy but his scenes were completed using CGI technology.
Although the creators of the series thought of canceling Furious 7, they later decided to go through with it in the wake of Walker’s passing and the movie became a massive box-office success, grossing over $1.5 billion in theaters globally.
Following his passing, the storyline of Brian O’Conner was rewritten to include a tribute to Walker. The film’s crew was tasked to produce around 350 additional shots of Walker,...

John Krasinski is successfully carving a special niche for himself, like Ben Affleck, by being a jack of all trades and a master of everything. The star has seamlessly forayed into the world of writing and directing, which has seen him gain a lot of critical acclaim, especially with his apocalyptic horror film series, A Quiet Place.

One would be forgiven for not knowing it, but a new exorcism movie starring Oscar-winner Russell Crowe hit theaters this past weekend. No, we're not talking about last year's "The Pope's Exorcist." Rather, we are talking about a brand new film from Vertical Entertainment simply titled "The Exorcism" that was, more or less, dumped after sitting on the shelf for several years. Unfortunately, the film is a flop in the early going by most metrics. However, it now holds a record for the folks at Vertical, representing the company's biggest opening weekend ever, amazingly enough.
Director Joshua John Miller's "The Exorcism" opened to $2.4 million, coming at number seven on the charts behind John Krasinski's "If" ($2.7 million), a movie in its sixth weekend in theaters that is already on VOD. Not exactly a blockbuster. That said, the number was big enough to overtake 2018's "Gotti" ($1.7 million) to become Vertical's biggest opener.

John Krasinski’s “If” (Paramount) needs strong post-theatrical results to make it a success. Initial results from PVOD ($19.99 rental), which reached #1 right away at both iTunes and Fandango, suggest it is headed in the right direction.
In the short term, it might be able to sustain that pace; its main competition will be this week’s release of the underperforming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” More critical is whether it can sustain multiple weeks at higher levels. With a $110 million before-marketing cost, $180 million in worldwide gross needs supplementing.
Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is sustaining its run. Netflix’s $20 million worldwide acquisition, after an above-average 10 days as #1 on its top 10 movie viewing chart, is still at #2. “Trigger Warning,” a far less-acclaimed Netflix original, is currently #1. The action/thriller title, which stars Jessica Alba and is the American debut for Indonesian director Mouly Surya, was filmed nearly three years ago.

No one saw this coming. “Inside Out 2” (Disney) fell only 35 percent in its second weekend. Following a great $154 million opening, huge initial weekdays, it’s added an estimated $100 million. That puts it at $355 million in only 10 days.
How big is that? Second only since Covid to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, which had December 25 and 26 in the first 10 days of its opening, eventually grossing $470 million in that time. It even edges out “Barbie” ($351 million) and bests the full run of “Oppenheimer.”
This is phenomenal. In many ways, this weekend is even more impressive than the strong debut. With less emphasis on premium screens and of course many lower-price tickets for kids, sales outpace any release since “No Way Home.” Kids also always elevate concessions, which makes the bounty for theaters even greater.
The total weekend gross will be around $152 million, an improvement of $41 million from last year and reducing the year-to-date shortfall to 21 percent.

The success of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” seems to have given the box office a much-needed jumpstart this weekend, helping a number of smaller releases. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After achieving the second-largest opening for an animated film, Disney and Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” had a negligible second weekend drop to bring in an estimated $100 million this weekend. That’s down just 35% from its opening weekend, but more importantly, it brings its domestic total to a whopping $355.2 million after just ten days. That is, by far, the biggest success we’ve seen at the box office since last July’s “Barbie,” as it also surpassed the $282.1 million made by “Dune: Part Two,” to become the highest-grossing movie of the year.
“Inside Out 2” added another $164.4 million overseas this weekend to bring its global total to $724.4 million in two weeks. That also passes the global total for “Dune,...

While Cailey Fleming delivers a scene-stealing performance in John Krasinski's If, many of you will likely know the actress best for her role as Judith in The Walking Dead.
That's not the only major franchise she's been part of, though, as Fleming previously played a young Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and made a surprise appearance as a younger Sylvie in Marvel Studios' Loki.
Talking to us about If - her first lead role in a feature - Fleming reflected on playing those iconic characters and revealed whether she'd be open to returning to them down the line.
"That’s a good question. I think I would definitely like to go back to those," she tells us in the video below. "That would be really cool. I loved both of those even though I played such a small part in them. I would love to do it again.

In an early scene of Mad Max: Fury Road, the warrior called Furiosa (Charlize Theron in that film) stands in a shadowless patch of barren desert alongside several women who have been sheltered from the heat, if not misery, all their lives. One of them laments about a flesh wound she just suffered as they watch their last ride out of the Wasteland vanish into the horizon. “It hurts,” she whispers. “Out here everything hurts,” Furiosa responds. “Now pick up what you can and run.”
Fans and admirers of George Miller’s Mad Max films can probably relate to that feeling these days. In an act that still defies the rules of convention applied to aging artists—and certainly those prescribed by Quentin Tarantino—Miller has labored away at building his beautiful nightmare vision of our post-apocalyptic future for nearly 50 years. And in that time, a case can be made...

The box office needed a hero, and that hero was Pixar. The storied animation house returned to the big screen this past weekend with its first sequel since 2019 in the form of "Inside Out 2." While tracking indicated that director Kelsey Mann's film was going to be a hit, the film ended up shattering expectations to instantly become one of the biggest hits of 2024. Not to get too ahead of ourselves here, but it now has a real shot at finishing the year as one of the three highest-grossing movies globally — if not the single biggest.
"Inside Out 2" opened to an estimated $155 million domestically to go with $140 million internationally, making for a whopping $295 million global start. That makes it not only the largest global opening of 2024, but it now ranks as the biggest global opening ever for an animated film. While Pixar's "Incredibles 2" had a higher domestic...

John Krasinski has had bit of a lopsided directing career. His first two feature directorial efforts, "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" and "The Hollars," came and went with almost no real notice. Then Krasinski helmed the sci-fi horror film "A Quiet Place," which became a smash hit and got everyone's attention. He returned to helm the sequel "A Quiet Place Part Two," and then handed the franchise over to "Pig" filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, who is directing the upcoming prequel "A Quiet Place: Day One." While he might not have a "Quiet Place" film this year, Krasinski did direct another 2024 title: the family film "If" (you can read our review right here).
"If" opened to so-so box office numbers, but has held on surprisingly well. However, if you've avoided seeing it in theaters for whatever reason and are instead planning to watch the film at home, here's some good news: it's...

Paramount has now released details for the home releases of John Krasinski’s family film about imaginary friends. The movie had an underwhelming response from audience ticket sales as it was one of the unfortunate flops of the summer. Our own Chris Bumbray mentioned in his review, “In the end, If is nowhere near as bad as some of its detractors will say it is (people are already calling it the worst movie of the year), but it’s not that great, either. It’s an interesting misfire from a director who clearly has some major chops and a huge career ahead of him.”
Now, you’ll be able to judge for yourself as the Ryan Reynolds starrer comes home to open up your imagination. The press release reads, “Experience writer/director John Krasinski’s “heartwarming” and “hilarious” original adventure If when it arrives to buy or rent on Digital June 18, 2024 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

At last. A weekend to sincerely cheer.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney) would have been terrific at a $100 million opening weekend, but it soared to an estimated $155 million. Meantime, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony), would have been thought successful with a 50 percent drop in its second weekend. Instead, it is off 42 percent with $33 million after an opening weekend of $56.5 million.
In what was set up to be a do-or-die critical two-weekend period, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) exceeded expectations — and more importantly, at the same time. It’s hard to overestimate how much dread there was ahead of these two releases. Had either or both fell short of reasonable expectations, as did to many recent high-end releases before them, the despair would have reached new lows.
Instead, not only did both franchise titles come through, they also exceeded best hopes. That happened last nearly a year ago,...

Weekend Box Office: Inside Out 2 posts 2nd best animated opening; Bad Boys holds strong in 2nd place
After a rough start to the summer, we can finally say with some confidence that the box office slump is over – at least for the time being. Pixar’s sequel, Inside Out 2, blew away industry expectations (including ours) to post the second-biggest animated opening of all time, just behind The Incredibles 2, which opened with $182.6 million. With a $155 million domestic opening, it’s by far the biggest opening of the year and marks a strong return to form for Pixar Studios, who’ve suffered through a series of embarrassing flops since the pandemic decimated their release schedule. With an A CinemaScore rating, word-of-mouth on this one should be great, with it looking like it’ll do strong business over the next two weekends, with very little in the way of competition until Despicable Me 4 on the July 4th holiday weekend.

After many months of disappointing showings at the box office, June seems to have fully recovered with Pixar having its biggest hit since pre-pandemic. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Disney released Pixar’s sequel “Inside Out 2” into 4,400 theaters after it scored a terrific 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The voices of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black, were joined by new emotions voiced by Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri and Adèle Exarchopoulos, but the success of the original Oscar-winning movie in 2015 drove millions to theaters to be the first to experience the sequel.
“Inside Out 2” managed to rack up $13 million in Thursday previews, which was added into Friday for a $62 million opening day. Disney is estimating that the animated sequel will gross $155 million domestically over the Father’s Day weekend. Move over Anxiety, there’s a new dominant emotion at the box office: Joy!
Disney and Pixar’s expressive animated sequel “Inside Out 2” scored a mighty $155 million in its first weekend of release, overtaking “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year. It’s also the first movie since last July’s “Barbie” ($162 million) to debut above $100 million. Heading into the weekend, the follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” was projected to collect $80 million to $90 million.
The second “Inside Out 2” also connected at the international box office with $140 million, enough to surpass “Frozen 2” ($135 million) as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time. Turnout was especially strong across Latin America, where it landed the second-biggest opening of all time behind Disney’s Marvel epic “Avengers: Endgame.” Globally, the movie has grossed $295 million to notch...

Don’t be afraid to catch feelings. Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office opening day of the year so far, earning a spectacular $62 million across Friday and preview screenings from 4,440 locations. It will have no trouble blasting past the $82.5 million debut earned by “Dune: Part Two” to overtake it as the biggest domestic opening of 2024. It’ll also be the first release to notch a nine-figure domestic opening in nearly 11 months — the last one to get above $100 million was “Barbie” last summer.
It’s a welcome bounce back for Pixar Animation Studios, which has struggled at the box office in recent years after Disney sent films like “Turning Red,” “Soul” and “Luca” directly to Disney+ during the Covid pandemic, a decision that Pixar head (and the director of the original “Inside Out”) Pete Docter says “trained” audiences to watch the studio’s features on streaming.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is shaping up to be one of the year’s big success stories at the box office, with Deadline reporting that the sequel is posting huge early numbers. It’s currently on track for a $140 million weekend, which would make it the third biggest animated movie opening of all time, behind The Incredibles 2 (which opened with $182 million) and last year’s The Super Mario Bros Movie (which opened with $146 million). Heck, if the box office really heats up today and tomorrow, Inside Out 2 could even potentially outgross Super Mario, although the general vibe seems to be that it will fall just a bit short.
Whatever the case, this is quite the coup, not only for the struggling summer box office but also for Pixar, which has suffered from a series of catastrophic flops since the pandemic. For a while, it looked like the studio had lost its magic,...

It’s been a tough time for the movie business.
The 2023 actors and writers strikes brought production to a standstill, leaving studios with fewer films to release in theaters. That’s bad news for cinemas, which are struggling to dig out from the financial hole left by Covid shutdowns and laboring to get audiences to visit the multiplexes at the numbers they were before the pandemic. Add to that a series of commercial disappointments, such as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “The Fall Guy” and “If,” and the industry is off to a very rough start to the summer movie season, a time of year when the box office is supposed to be booming.
Michael O’Leary, the president of the National Association of Theater Owners, knows that the cinema operators he represents through his trade group have been through a lot. But he also believes that things are turning around,...

The weekend sees the release of Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Given the company’s dire track record as of late, many expect it to be the movie that puts the company back on top of the box office heap. Over at Box Office Pro, they predict the movie can open with anywhere from $85 to 115 million. While I’d love to see the box office get a much-needed kick in the pants, I think these predictions are too optimistic for a few reasons.
For one, PIxar’s track record in terms of openings has been pretty bad over the last few years. Lightyear, which everyone assumed would be a smash hit given that it’s a spin-off of the Toy Story movies, opened with $50 million, a number many considered disastrous. However, it got a lot worse, with Elemental opening to a terrible $29 million last summer, even though it legged out...

"There is something that imagination can never defeat." Netflix has revealed a new trailer for the animated movie The Imaginary, the second feature film by Studio Ponoc, the animation house in Japan that is pretty much the successor to Studio Ghibli. This film is even directed by one of the key animators on many Ghibli features, including Porco Rosso and Spirited Away, who has been working at Ponoc ever since Mary and the Witch's Flower. Rudger is a boy no one can see, imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures. When Rudger arrives alone at "The Town of Imaginaries" – where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work – he faces a mysterious threat. Directed by renowned animator Yoshiyuki Momose, The Imaginary is an unforgettable adventure of love, loss, and the healing power of imagination. The English-language voice cast includes Louie Rudge-Buchanan, Evie Kiszel, Hayley Atwell, Sky Katz, Jeremy Swift, Kal Penn,...

With the release of films like John Krasinski’s If, Blumhouse’s Imaginary, and even Ale de Jong’s 1991 comedy Drop Dead Fred, the power of imagination flows strongly throughout Hollywood. While each of the films mentioned above brings something different to the table, Yoshiyuki Momose’s latest animated feature, The Imaginary, hits differently. Studio Ponoc is proud to present The Imaginary trailer today, previewing an upcoming animated film to boggle the senses, stir emotions, and remind you of friends long forgotten.
Studio Ponoc‘s The Imaginary portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger, a boy no one can see imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures. But when Rudger, suddenly alone, arrives at The Town of Imaginaries, where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work, he faces a mysterious threat. 2024 has been a big year for movies about imaginary friends, between the Blumhouse horror film "Imaginary" and John Krasinski's live-action family film "If." Now, Netflix is getting in on the imagination-based fun with Studio Ponoc's "The Imaginary," which already looks to be one of the best animated films of the year. With breathtaking hand-drawn animation and a groundbreaking technique of animating light and shadow, "The Imaginary" looks stunning and seems to be introducing a whimsical, heartfelt, and emotionally charged story to back up the gorgeous visuals. Here's the official synopsis of the film, which is based on A.F. Harold and illustrator Emily Gravett's beloved and award-winning novel of the same name:
"Studio Ponoc's 'The Imaginary' portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger, a boy no one can see imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures.

Few people appreciate fashion and costumes quite like Kim Kardashian.
The beauty and fashion mogul, Hulu star, and lawyer-to-be is never too busy to pass up an opportunity to rock a new look she spent way too much money on.
In June 2024, Kim posted several photos of her on the town to see Janet Jackson.
The Skims founder’s outing included Khloe Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and the women she calls her “lifers.”
While enjoying her time with her loved ones, Kim called all of us broke once again by wearing one of Janet’s actual looks as she sang the singer’s iconic tunes.
That’s one way to show out for one of your favorite musicians and it’s something that an everyday fan could never pull off.
