Shaina West on her ass-kicking new film Jade, Martial Arts movies, Mickey Rourke, Black Widow & more
Recently we sat down with Shaina West, who has appeared in Black Widow and The Woman King to talk about all things Jade. She leads the film alongside quite a cast, which includes Katherine McNamara, Mickey Rourke, and Mark Dacascos.
The movie is out now digital platforms. Linda Marric asks the questions.
Shaina West Jade Interview
Plot:
After the devastating death of her brother, Jade is determined never to pick up a gun again… but in a twist of fate she’s unwittingly drawn into a deadly world of gang warfare, as she becomes embroiled in a plot to bring down Interpol involving powerful businessman Tork (Mickey Rourke).
With grit, determination and second-to-none combat skills, aided by an old friend on the force, Reese (Mark Dacascos), our heroine must take on the criminals and do whatever it takes to bring them down, in this high-octane battle-filled feature.

Jade begins with an animated sequence telling us that Jade and her brother Brandon came to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico after their parents were murdered in London. Why or by whom they were killed isn’t explained. Nor is exactly how they ended up in a street gang, or how that led to Jade accidentally killing her brother, made clear. But whatever the reason, she’s sworn never to use a gun again.
Once the film turn to live action, we see Jade dropping in to see Layla who is not happy to see her. That might be because the baby she’s carrying will never know its father, thanks to Jade’s errant bullet.
As if that isn’t enough for her to deal with, she soon...

Let’s dream the crow black dream. I’m Niki Minter and this week on the Eric Draven files, we have The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. This is the first time we have a series that I feel lukewarm about. However, this is one that does have its fans and there’s a reason, aside from the upcoming reimagining, that we’re discussing it. This should be a fun time.
Okay, so, I caught Stairway on the Sci-Fi channel a few times here and there during its initial run. It caught my interest but never enough to start it from the beginning. What’s interesting about this is that it’s based on the 1994 movie adaptation which was pulled from James O’Barr’s original comic. Mark Dacascos would be the one and only person ever to fill the role once held by Brandon Lee. This is an interesting take, right?...

Take a look at the new horror feature “Return to Silent Hill”, based on the Konami “Silent Hill 2” video game, directed by Christophe Gans (“Brotherhood of The Wolf”), starring Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson, with a theatrical release date Tba:

There was talk that Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans’ new Silent Hill movie Return to Silent Hill, which is said to be “totally independent from the two previous movies,” would be having its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, but that’s not exactly what happened. What actually happened was that there was a private screening of the film for potential distributors. We don’t know how that went, but we are benefiting from the film’s search for distributors. The first image made its way online a couple weeks ago (that can be seen above), and now a teaser trailer has made its way online. You can check that out right here:

"Leave now! And tell your kind about me... Tell your kind a new God will soon rule!" Oh damn!! Holy hell this is awesome. A badass fan-film has debuted online called Logan the Wolf, made by a French stuntman / filmmaker / fight choreographer named Godefroy Ryckewaert. He's most recently worked as a fighter choreographer on The Witcher series, and also the upcoming The Crow remake. Set in a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, the 12-minute short film follows Logan as he navigates a hostile environment, facing both old and new enemies. The narrative focuses on Logan's struggle with the burden of his past. This looks like it's inspired by the underrated French action film Brotherhood of the Wolf. It reinvents Wolverine as if he were a fighter in a time with Vikings and fur-clad warriors. It's extremely violent & uber brutal, and is pretty much one giant 10 minute action sequence with kick ass stunt work from Ryckewaert's team.

In 1996 she was nominated for a 'César Award' for best supporting actress for her portrayal of 'Lisa' in "L'Appartement".
This was followed by roles in "Malèna" (2000), "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and "Irréversible" (2002).

All for one and … two for all?
In a bold move, French film studio Pathé bet nearly $80 million on an all-star, double-barreled adaptation of “The Three Musketeers,” gambling that interest would be high enough that director Martin Bourboulon could split Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling epic over two films, spaced half a year apart, and audiences would show up for both halves. The gamble paid off, as the first part — “The Three Musketeers – Part One: D’Artagnan,” released last April — was a huge hit, and appetites remain strong for the sequel, which opens in France on Dec. 13.
In the States, however, where “Kill Bill,” “The Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning” have paved the way for two-part blockbusters, that strategy seems less certain. A series of disappointing screen versions has tarnished the legend. It would be easy to eventize a double bill, marketed to fanboys and action-movie enthusiasts, in which all four...

The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!
Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Descent was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The decade comprised of the years 2000 to 2009 seems to be maligned by many horror fans as a bad period, a period where nothing good was released. Much like the decades before it when folks maligned the 1990s, 1980s, and now more recent movies, there was some bad stuff put out of course, but there were also a whole of good movies too. Some of them, like The Strangers in 2008, The House of the Devil in 2009, and Brotherhood of the Wolf in 2001 were excellent even. People often seem to paint the past in a better light and vilify the more recent eras when it comes to horror films. In 2005, plenty of horror films were released.

The Ghost with the Most, Beetlejuice, is finally getting a sequel to his 1988 classic, and Italian actress Monica Bellucci is in talks to join the cast. Cameras will roll later this month on Beetlejuice 2, with Michael Keaton, Catharine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Justin Theroux also starring.
Beetlejuice 2 haunts theaters on September 6, 2024, with Ortega playing Lydia Deetz’s daughter. Tim Burton directs from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of Netflix’s Wednesday series. Filming is going down this summer in London. Burton’s longtime collaborator, Danny Elfman, provides the score. Brad Pitt’s Plan B banner is producing the sequel.
Notoriously, Beetlejuice 2 was in limbo for years. Burton would only make the film if Keaton agreed to return, and Ryder would only play Lydia if Burton and Keaton were on board. With all three returning, work on the long-awaited sequel is underway.

Monica Bellucci, currently on screens in the comedy Mafia Mamma, is in negotiations to join the cast of bold-faced names in Beetlejuice 2.
Warner Bros. is in full-on casting mode as the feature goes before cameras this month, with Tim Burton, who directed the original movie that was released in 1988, back in the director’s chair.
Jenna Ortega is leading the cast with Michael Keaton reprising his role as the obnoxious ghost. Winona Ryder is also back, playing Ortega’s mother. Catherine O’Hara is also among the returnees, while Justin Theroux is a newcomer to the proceedings.
While plot details are being kept in the coffin, it is known that Bellucci will play Beetlejuice’s wife.
Warners announced Tuesday that the feature will be released Sept. 6, 2024, taking over the date from Marvel’s Blade, which last week shut down preproduction due to the writers strike.

Mark Dacascos has been around on our screens since 1989, playing mostly in films that required fighting skills which he has in spades. With over 80 parts in film, television, and even video games, the man has made his mark. His martial arts background is impressive, being the son of Al Dacascos, one of the founder of Wun Hop Kuen Do (Whkd) Kung Fu, he has been trained from a young age and it shows. Mark Dacascos is one of the most skilled fighters in the industry, something that shows through many of his roles. Here are our picks for the best Mark Dacascos movies.
Only the Strong (1993)
Early on in his career, but not exactly at the start, this film is one that helped put Dacascos on the map. Yes, he had done other work, but for most action film fans, this capoeira film really shows his talent as an actor and a martial artist.

As hard as he tries to leave this life behind him, John Wick just can't catch a break. You go on one rampage to avenge your dead puppy and the next thing you know, your face lights up on every assassin's wishlist. Given that he's made it all the way to" John Wick: Chapter 4," it's going to take a lot for someone to take Wick down. Michael Nyqvist, Riccardo Scamarcio, Common, Ruby Rose, and Asia Kate Dillon have all made some fun adversaries to Baba Yaga. But then we have Mark Dacascos as Zero, who really switches things up.
Most of Wick's enemies go after him because a sacred rule has been broken or it's just business, but Dacascos' Zero takes a different approach. In "John Wick: Chapter 3," after the hit order is put out for Wick, the Adjudicator (Dillon) recruits the hitman and his crew to put an end to him.

Frank Miller is set to create, write and executive produce a limited series adaptation of Hugo Pratt’s Corto Maltese graphic novels for StudioCanal.

“I first discovered Corto Maltese reading the books at Forbidden Planet in New York as a young man. Then on my travels, I studied and discovered an edition at a newsstand in Rome. Birthe Neumann as Karen Blixen with Thorkild Bjørnvig (Simon Bennebjerg) in The Pact, Bille August’s elegant take on creation and destruction.

In Bille August’s The Pact (Pagten), co-written with Christian Torpe and based on the memoir by Thorkild Bjørnvig, starring Birthe Neumann as Blixen, opposite Simon Bennebjerg as Bjørnvig, she tests her own devilishness, and yet remains always very human. Blixen’s Seven Gothic Tales and Out Of Africa, plus Sydney Pollack’s film version of the latter with Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, and Klaus Maria Brandauer may float in and out of our memory while watching the machinations of mutual manipulation unfold.

Paris-based sales agent WTFilms, which specializes in genre movies, is presenting Romain Quirot’s sophomore feature film, “Apache: Gang of Paris,” at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris.
The pic is an ambitious revenge movie set in early 20th century Paris, when rival gangs were wreaking havoc. The term apache was coined in Paris at the time, to describe street gangs. “It’s a modern stylish and raw revenge movie,” says WTFilms’ Gregory Chambet. “We hope it will offer a renewal of the French action thriller genre, as Christophe Gans did with ‘Brotherhood of the Wolves’.”
Quirot’s freshman pic, cosmic road movie “The Last Journey,” starring Jean Reno, won Best Film at Sitges in 2020.
WTFilms’ slate also includes Quentin Dupieux’s “Incredible but True,” that follows on from his Venice-playing giant fly comedy, “Mandibles,” that starred French comedy duo Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais.

"I hope I don't disappoint," Dan Laustsen said. He doesn't, on the big screen or in person. After years of hearing directors sing the praises of Laustsen, one of the great cinematographers working today, it was a pleasure finally speaking to the man himself. Especially about a film such as Guillermo del Toro's "Nightmare Alley," which, like Stan's (Bradley Cooper) cheap tricks, casts quite a spell on the audience.
Over the years, Laustsen has shot a variety of hypnotizing films, including "John Wick: Chapter Two," "Brotherhood of the Wolf," and two of del Toro's previous films, "The Shape of Water" and "Crimson Peak." Together, del Toro and...

Some movies can be easily summed up in a single-sentence summary. That’s always been the appeal of the “high concept” film – it’s driven by a plot that can be quickly understood and easily marketed: “Teenager goes back in time to fix up parents”; “Dinosaur zoo breaks and dinosaurs get loose.” There’s nothing wrong with this kind of movie – some of my all-time favorites fall into this camp – but it’s easy to see why Hollywood has leaned on the formula for the last 40 years or so. Other movies defy easy description, either because their plots are complicated or because they take a relatively simple premise and veer off in all kinds of different directions. One such movie is the 2001 film Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le pacte des loups), directed by Christophe Gans and new to Blu-ray via a Scream Factory Collector’s Edition. Sure, you could boil...

If this telling of The Beast by Kurt Sutter sounds familiar it should to those that have seen Brotherhood of the Wolf, a French movie that came out in 2001 and was actually quite interesting given that it was a bit of mystery as well as a martial arts exhibit as it starred Mark Dacascos, who’s best known for having starred on Iron Chef: America and in the latest John Wick movie. If anyone’s willing to doubt this then perform a quick Google search in order to verify the location and the time period that Sutter will be writing about,

When word got out that Metro Manila director Sean Ellis was premiering a film about werewolves at the 2021 Sundance Festival, it immediately became one of the most anticipated films for this year’s fest. Ellis had already proved himself a competent director, both with his BAFTA nominated film Metro Manila as well as his Oscar nominated short film debut Cashback, so the idea of him returning to the festival with his take on one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie monsters was bound to turn some heads.
It is almost unheard of for a monster film to be programmed in the premiere category at Sundance, as most often than not, these films tend to be sequestered to the rowdy and rambunctious crowds that stalk the festival at night. All early indicators showed that this was going to be a horror movie for the ages, and boy did it not disappoint.
