While pregnancy is touted as one of the most beautiful aspects of life, the journey toward the reward of a bouncing baby is not always smooth. Although considered one of the most "natural" things in the world, the act of pregnancy has symptoms that are strange, physically and emotionally draining, and even life-or-death. There's a user on TikTok referred to as "The Girl with the List" who keeps a list of currently over 300 ways pregnancy and childbirth can ravage your body and mind: making you sick, stretching your skin, feeling like sharp pains in your back, swelling your ankles, losing your hair, weakening your nails, and on and on.
There's something very unsettling about a whole other person growing and moving inside you, absorbing your nutrients, changing who you are inside and out, and then being expelled from your body — sometimes in a violent manner. It's no wonder the horror...

#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The writer and director of slasher-comedy Freaky are reuniting for a brand new time-traveling slasher movie titled Time Cut, with Christopher Landon producing and Michael Kennedy writing the script alongside Hanna Macpherson (“Into the Dark”). MacPherson also directs Time Cut, which has been described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.”
We’ve learned today that Time Cut is coming to Netflix in 2024!
In the upcoming slasher, “A teenage girl travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister.”
It sounds like this one is cut from the same cloth as Freaky, Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Knife and Totally Killer, part of a new breed of horror-comedy-slasher hybrids.
Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) star alongside Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor.

From Stu Macher in Scream to Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, Matthew Lillard is no stranger to iconic roles — but the fervent fanbase that accompanied his casting as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s came as a surprise. The wildly popular video game franchise yielded Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film of all-time.
The affable actor knew of the games but hadn’t played them prior to getting the role. “I got a call from my manager saying, ‘I’ve been working on this project for a while, and I’ve set up a meeting for you and the director, and if it goes well, the part’s yours.’ For me, every time that happens, the movie’s pretty shitty,” he chuckles.

Long-time character actor Camden Toy, best known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, more recently, the horror anthology series Into The Dark, has died. He was 68. According to a press release from Toy’s representatives, the actor passed away on Monday, December 11, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. His longtime partner, Bethany ‘Bea’ Henderson, opened up about his diagnosis earlier this month in a Facebook post, writing, “My heart is breaking as I watch my Love vanish before me!” “Many of our circle know that Camden has been battling with pancreatic cancer for 2 years. He was diagnosed in February last year after months of mysterious pain. For many reasons we were very hopeful for, at least, a longer and more fruitful time on planet Earth,” Henderson continued. She added, “Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve reached the end of the road with the doctor’s treatments.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Who Knows Why We Make the Memories We Do?
IMDb search results and the monolithic “critical consensus” can tell you what supposedly should come to mind when any given actor comes up in conversation. But every cinephile knows that for whatever reason performers become permanently linked to specific roles in our minds. It’s an indelible, personal assignment that can be sentimentally meaningful (Robin Williams will always be the “Aladdin” Genie in Disney adults’ hearts) — or inexplicable and circumstantial.

“Here is something that myself and the team at New Wave Entertainment tried to pull off back in 2008 as a bonus feature for the first Blu-ray release of An American Werewolf in London in September 2009,” Davis explains. “With the blessing of John Landis and Universal Home Entertainment, we attempted to restore Elmer Bernstein’s...

Sharon Van Etten shared a new single called “Close to You,” which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett for the official soundtrack to the upcoming Apple Original drama series The Buccaneers.
Equal parts eerie and alluring, “Close to You” sees Van Etten infuse her classic Americana-inspired rock with a heavy wash of dreamy reverb, cooing lines like: “I got a taste of being with you, don’t wanna waste more time,” “put on your best dress and get out of your head,” and “get away and I’ll stay close to you.”
The song was produced by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who also produced the entire soundtrack: “It was a truly incredible experience working with this group of uniquely talented artists,” she said in a press release. “Everyone brought their A-game and taught me something invaluable about the creative process. Witnessing these artists map each character’s journey through song was...

[This story contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s.]
Five Nights at Freddy’s filmmaker Emma Tammi has now set the opening weekend record of $80 million for a Blumhouse film, and she’s keenly aware that her journey to this point was an unlikely one.
Tammi started out as a documentary filmmaker, tackling such subjects as endurance running in Fair Chase (2014) and the 2016 Presidential Election in the Jason Blum-produced Election Day: Lens Across America (2017). From there, the producers of Fair Chase approached her about the supernatural horror film, The Wind (2018), after seeing the way she and co-director Alex Cullen captured New Mexico in their doc. They wanted Tammi to bring those same instincts to The Wind’s own New Mexico backdrop amidst the Old West.
The Wind ended up being well received, which signaled to Blum that Tammi could also be a viable genre director. He eventually thought of her for the long-in-development...

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” is finally here.
And the daunting task of scaring the pants off of people who have never heard of the property – and appealing to die-hard fans who have played every game – fell to director Emma Tammi, who had worked with Blumhouse on two movies in their “Into the Dark” Hulu series.
The movie stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike, a man who is down on his luck and caring for his young sister Abby (Piper Rubio). Soon he takes a job as a security guard for an abandoned pizzeria called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which has a sinister past and a small army of incredibly unsettling animatronic characters. (The characters were brought to life in the film thanks to the geniuses at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.) Soon enough Mike is looking into the mysteries of the past while trying to save his own skin in the present.

Even when “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was a video game, the franchise has always been watched more than it has been played. A tiny budget indie game released unceremoniously in 2014, the original point-and-click title’s gameplay loop amounts to little more than viewing security camera feeds, occasionally pressing a few buttons to turn on some lights and close some doors. But Scott Cawthon’s passion project, created after the developer cut his teeth on Christian-themed games (seriously), became a phenomenon through a barrage of reaction videos that spread on social media of players shrieking at the jump scares that give the otherwise quiet title some moderate spark.
In that context, the film adaptation’s simultaneous release in theaters and on Peacock, usually a sign of little confidence in a project, feels oddly fitting. Streaming replicates the solo terrors of playing through the game on your PC, while going to theaters...

Generally speaking, TV is a less frightening medium than film. (Broadcast news notwithstanding.) Part of that’s the serialized nature of the format; it can be difficult to get really scared wondering whether Scully and Mulder will make it out of any given “X-Files” nightmare when there are 18 or so installments left in the season and you know the show can’t go on without its star characters. It doesn’t help matters that network standards have also kept horror TV decidedly tamer than anything found in R-rated horror efforts for decades; you just can’t put a Rob Zombie or Eli Roth joint anywhere.
And yet, in spite of those disadvantages, the genre has positively flourished on television as of late, with plenty of creepy limited series and spooky serialized dramas bringing terror to the small screen. Audiences curious about what caused this phenomenon can thank “American Horror Story,...

“Write what you know” is a common piece of writing advice and something that came naturally to writer/director Gigi Saul Guerrero when drawing inspiration for her historical horror segment “God of Death” in the latest anthology installment V/H/S/85.
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
The filmmaker behind recent horror hits Bingo Hell, Into the Dark’s “Culture Shock,” and Satanic Hispanics joins an all-star lineup for V/H/S/85 that includes David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
Guerrero’s segment, “God of Death,” draws from Mexican mythology and the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985. For the filmmaker, the harrowing historical event that inspired her segment happened to be personal.
“As soon as they told me ’85, it just clicked to do the most famous traumatic event that happened in Mexico City, where I was born and raised,...

William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist turns 50 years old here in 2023, and the film’s raw power is felt as much today as it was all those decades ago. One of the most enduring images of the 1973 masterpiece is the face of the demon Pazuzu, played by Eileen Dietz.
The image flashes on the screen multiple times throughout The Exorcist, turning Dietz into something of a horror icon in her own right. All these years later, rare footage from those Pazuzu makeup tests has surfaced, and it’s been shared by Paul Davis on social media.

Actor Adam Faison took a break from marching outside Disney in Burbank on Wednesday to speak with Deadline, calling artificial intelligence one of his primary concerns for the future of his profession and the industry at large.
His trepidation was informed by an unnerving encounter with the technology that he had within the past year, before the launch of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and perhaps before AI was even breaking so prevalently into the public discourse. You’ll never look at a Chuck E. Cheese’s the same way again.
The new trailer for “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” based on the video game of the same name, is here and it’s ready to creep you out. You can watch it above.
In the movie, Josh Hutcherson plays a down-on-his-luck security guard who takes a job guarding a derelict family entertainment center called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza that has some old animatronics that spring to life and murder anyone who crosses their path.
If you are a child of the 1980s and have ever visited a Chuck E. Cheese or ShowBiz Pizza Place, then you are intimately aware of the intoxicating combination of subpar pizza and disquieting animatronic figures. The fact that in “Five Nights at Freddy’s” the characters are also murderous automatons seems like the only natural progression.

Phoebe Dynevor might have a new man in her life. The 27-year-old star is sparking dating rumors after she was recently seen holding hands with fellow 27-year-old actor Cameron Fuller in London, per photos shared by Daily Mail on April 10. They were accompanied by Cameron's father, producer Brad Fuller during the outing.
The pair were first spotted together in March when they were photographed leaving a New York City hotel, according to the publication. Reps for Dynevor and Cameron did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
The sighting comes nearly two years after Dynevor's high-profile fling with Pete Davidson. Dynevor is best known for playing Lady Daphne in Netflix's "Bridgerton," though she will not reprise her role in the forthcoming third season. Meanwhile, Cameron is known for films like 2014's "The Last Ship" and 2018's "Into the Dark."

You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.
Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.
While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

Roses are red. Violets are blue. We hate Valentine’s Day. How about you?
Ok, “hate” is an overstatement. At the very least, capitalism’s annual ode to the big L-o-v-e is an excellent excuse to revisit our favorite rom-coms and dramatic love stories. From “The Notebook” and “Moonlight” to “Notting Hill” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” the best movies about the highs and lows of finding The One can bring smiles to our faces and tears to our eyes. Arguably, it’s these films that make the most compelling arguments for a holiday wholly dedicated to flowers, greeting cards, and other displays of chocolate-dipped devotion.
Still, Valentine’s Day draws ire for its materialistic center and vaguely exclusionary culture. More than ever, singles, couples, and so-called “situationships” are foregoing the traditional dinner-for-two and enjoying Galentine’s, Palentine’s, and other counter culture celebrations on or around February 14. Whether you’re...

Valentine's Day means different things to different people. For some, it's a joyous celebration of the people in their lives. For others, it's a painful reminder of loves lost and broken hearts. Then, for the rest of us, it's a springboard for silly slashers about lovesick killers. Second only to Christmas, Valentine's Day might well be the most popular holiday in slasher flicks. The innate tension between treacly intimacy and gonzo gore is too good an opportunity to pass up, and for time immemorial, creatives have merged both love and fear in increasingly twisted ways.
Some recent editions to the horror canon, like "Bones and All" and "Spring," while not strictly speaking Valentine's Day-themed, are deeply romantic, reminding audiences of how perfectly the two disparate emotions can coalesce into something amazing. Here, we'll be looking at horror movies specifically about the most romantic day of the year. From old school slashers to creepy,...

Identical White Boys
After bouncing all over the place in November with episodes on Knives and Skin, Starship Troopers, Perfect Blue and Addams Family Values, we’re settling into a few weeks of themed ‘Winter Horror’ discussions. Last week was Joel Schumacher’s deliciously queer camp Batman & Robin and this week, we’re back in Rural Horror territory with the cannibal prequel origin story we didn’t know we wanted in Declan O’Brien‘s Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011).
In the film, a group of college kids embark on a ski/snowmobile weekend when they get lost in a white-out storm. Seeking shelter in a nearby sanitarium that was the site of a horrific massacre, the group finds themselves hunted by a trio of inbred cannibals: the Hillicker brothers.
As the group is picked off one by one, they struggle to survive both the elements, as well as the...
After bouncing all over the place in November with episodes on Knives and Skin, Starship Troopers, Perfect Blue and Addams Family Values, we’re settling into a few weeks of themed ‘Winter Horror’ discussions. When one door opens, Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard close it. The two actors have been cast in “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the Blumhouse feature film adaptation of the popular survival-horror game series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Like the original game, which was released in 2014 and immediately became a viral sensation, the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie will focus on a troubled security guard at a Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza venue. During his first night, the animatronic characters in the restaurant come alive, forcing the guard to outwit them if he hopes to survive a week of employment. In the video game, the guard’s survival methods mostly manifest in opening and closing security doors; presumably, the film will be a bit more action-packed.
It has not been announced who Hutcherson and Lillard will play; production on the film is set to commence in New Orleans in February. Emma Tammi, who...

Holy Ice Puns, Batman!
After ending November with the better-than-the-original sequel Addams Family Values and Jacques Tourneur’s queer-coded Cat People, we’re kicking off December with an annual discussion of a Batman film…only this time it’s queer filmmaker Joel Schumacher‘s much-maligned sequel: 1997’s Batman & Robin!
The film sees Batman (George Clooney) and his partner, Robin (Chris O’Donnell), attempting to the foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who wants to make Gotham into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), a plant-loving femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contends with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), joins the ranks of the city’s crime-fighters.

The creepy kid movie There’s Something Wrong with the Children is part of an eight movie deal that was made between Blumhouse and Epix (which is soon to be renamed MGM+), and now – thanks to the folks at Rue Morgue – we know when we’re going to have the chance to see it. Paramount Home Entertainment will be giving There’s Something Wrong with the Children a VOD and digital release on January 17th. It will then make its way over to MGM+ two months later, on March 17th.
Directed by Roxanne Benjamin (Body at Brighton Rock) from a screenplay written by T.J. Cimfel and David White (the 2015 home invasion movie Intruders), There’s Something Wrong with the Children has the following synopsis: Margaret and Ben take a weekend trip with longtime friends Ellie and Thomas and their two young children. Eventually, Ben begins to suspect something supernatural is...

Get Fucked Oliver
It was a busy November as Trace and I bounced from Jennifer Reeder’s female-centric text Knives and Skin to Paul Verhoeven’s anti-war satire Starship Troopers. Then we dipped over to Japan for Satoshi Kon’s gorgeously animated Perfect Blue before tackling Thanksgiving queerness in Addams Family Values, which proved, yet again, that straight folks get really upset when we explore Lgbtqia issues in popular texts!
In celebration of the final week of Noirvember, now we’re covering Val Lewton‘s 1942 Film Noir-informed psychosexual thriller Cat People. In the Jacques Tourneur-directed film, Irena (Simone Simon) is a Serbian immigrant living in New York with no friends or family. She is wooed by All-American Oliver (Kent Smith), but can’t consummate their marriage for fear of activating a killer curse that she believes will transform her into a panther and kill. Challenged by terrible therapist Dr.

Already missing Twitter trolling? Short on material to spark resentment since the midterm elections ended? Here’s a list that’ll get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. It’s not an exhaustive one, but if you really want to replicate the family feast experience, you can get liquored up and argue about it. There’s something here for every taste – even if your taste is on the “Dahmer” end of the spectrum.
“Home for the Holidays” (1995) Dylan McDermott and Holly Hunter liven up stuffy Cynthia Stevenson’s Thanksgiving in “Home for the Holidays” (Paramount)
More mischievous than mawkish, this minor masterpiece from director Jody Foster captures the spirit of family get-togethers and all their baggage. At her parents’ Baltimore home after losing her job and making out with her boss, Claudia (Holly Hunter) looks on as gay brother Tommy struggles to carve the turkey and launches it into the lap...

Into the Dark: Good Boy is a Blumhouse horror comedy directed by Tyler MacIntyre, starring Judy Greer. The ninth episode of the horror anthology series – Into the Dark.
A “terrifying” satire on Hulu about a not so adorable pooch.
Premise
Maggie is at a crux. She is fired from the job, undergoes hormone treatment to have her eggs extracted and frozen, is on the dating scene in search of Mr. Perfect, and while she awaits all the grand events in her life to happen, she recurs to mindfulness and to adopting a sweet emotional support pooch. The canine will not be as wonderful as she had expected, as she soon will realize. It will act out, channeling any anxiety she feels, and he will do so in horrifying ways.
