“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

The last time (and only time) Aardman Animations made a sequel to one of its beloved stop-motion animated features, the result was "A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon," a pretty charming love letter to classic sci-fi cinema. So the bar is set even higher for "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," the long-awaited follow-up to "Chicken Run." The studio's 2000 riff on "The Great Escape" is still the highest-grossing stop-motion animated movie of all time and, for some animation enthusiasts, remains Aardman's crowning achievement, which is no minor feat. I mean, we're talking about the same studio that "28 Days Later" director Danny Boyle praised for creating "the best action sequence I've ever seen in a film" in "Wallace and Gromit -- The Wrong Trousers."
"Dawn of the Nugget" sees the feathered freedom fighter fowl formerly found flocking on Tweedy's Farm living out their dreams of paradise on a lovely island bird sanctuary.

Netflix has laid off 30 staffers from its Film Animation teams, IndieWire has confirmed.
Earlier this year, Netflix unveiled new leadership for its Animation Film team: vice president of Animation Film Content Karen Toliver and VP of Animation Film Production Traci Balthazor. Wednesday’s changes organize the animated-film production business under Balthazor, a person with knowledge of the plans told us. The 30 roles in question were no longer needed, the person said.
Netflix has had seven animated projects nominated for Oscars over the past five years, including a win for “If Anything Happens, I Love You” (Best Animated Short Film). The other nominated animated films include 2022 nominees “Robin Robin” (Best Animated Short) and “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Best Animated Feature), 2021’s “Over The Moon” (Best Animated Feature Film) and “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (Best Animated Feature), and 2020’s “I Lost My Body” (Best Animated Feature) and “Klaus” (Best...

Exclusive: We are hearing from sources that Cattywumpus, the Gore Verbinski-directed animated movie about outer space felines, will be getting shopped around town to other studios.
Verbinski, whose films have grossed 3.76 billion and who won an Oscar in 2012 for the Paramount animated movie Rango, had been working on his latest film at Netflix.
Such is the complex nature of animated film production, where quite often halfway through, stories and plans can pivot. There’s a history of that from movies such as Pixar’s Soul and Dinosaur and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Cattywumpus repped Verbinski’s second animated movie after the Johnny Depp-voiced Western Rango, which grossed 246 million at the worldwide box office.
Netflix, we understand, gave the creative team the option to go shop the movie elsewhere.
Netflix has seen promotions and changeovers in its animation executive suite over the summer.

UK animation studio Aardman (Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit) is teaming up with filmmaker Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) on a Bollywood-inspired feature.
The musical will tell the story of Bodhi, a young Indian elephant from the jungles of Kerala with an impossible dream – to be a Bollywood dancer.
Chadha will direct and is co-writing the script with Paul Mayeda Berges, under the banner of their production company Bend It Networks.
Chadha said: “Aardman is a Great British national treasure. I am honoured and excited to bring my unique British Asian vision to their acclaimed animation studio. Their work has so much heart, humour and affection, and we share a love of authentic and joyful underdog stories about memorable characters – so it really is a perfect match.”

The directors of Soul, the first Pixar film to feature an African-American protagonist, paid tribute to music and art teachers and jazz musicians after their Oscars win.
Pete Docter and Dana Murray won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature – continuing Pixar’s dominance in this category with 11 wins in the last 20 years.
“This film started as a love letter to jazz but we had no idea how much jazz would teach us about life. We don’t get to control what happens but we can, like a jazz musician turn whatever happens into something of value and beauty,” Docter said. “Our main character, Joe, is a music teacher and we want to thank music teachers and art teachers everywhere – you make the world a better place. My wish for all of us tonight is that we can follow the example of jazz musicians, wherever we are, whatever we have, we turn it into something beautiful.

Nomadland, as expected, was the big winner at Sunday’s 93rd Academy Awards, picking up trophies for Best Picture, Best Director for Chloé Zhao (the first woman of color to snag that honor) and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.
In the night’s biggest upset, Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for The Father, prevailing over the late Chadwick Boseman (who received a posthumous nod for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom).

That was a bit of a long engagement wasn’t it? In most years, the Oscars are a distant memory by mid-March, but here we are approaching the end of April, and only now are we learning who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences really think is the best.
Oscars 2021 are done, and with them we realize the strange year that was 2020 is perhaps finally in the rearview. Still, it doesn’t mean that year will leave without a few bitter surprises. Likely more than a few folks were disappointed by the shocking final moment of the night when Anthony Hopkins upset the late Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category. Unusually, the award was even presented as the final of the evening, and we’ve unpacked some of the implications of that here.
However, it should be said Hopkins is devastating in The Father, and there are...

The Oscar race for animated feature is between Pixar’s Black-led “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s hand-drawn Irish folktale, “Wolfwalkers” (co-produced by Apple Original Films). Both led Asifa-Hollywood’s prestigious Annie Awards, but the momentum is with “Soul.”
The other nominees include Pixar’s first fantasy, “Onward,” and two entries from Netflix: “Over the Moon,” the gorgeous musical fantasy about the Chinese Moon Goddess from Disney legend Glen Keane (Oscar winner for the “Dear Basketball” short), and Aardman’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.”
With director/chief creative officer Pete Docter at the helm, Pixar accomplished its most ambitious film yet by contrasting gritty New York City with the ethereal Great Before. “Soul” won Best Studio Animated Feature over one of its Oscar rival, “Onward,” as well as “The Croods: A New Age,” “The Willoughbys” and “Trolls: World Tour.” “Soul” also prevailed in six other races: character animation, editorial, music, special effects, storyboards and writing.
Likewise “Wolfwalkers” won Best Independent Feature over Oscar contender “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” plus “Calamity Jane,” “On-Gaku: Our Sound” and “Ride Your Wave.” “Wolfwalker” also walked away with the trophies for character design, direction, production design and voice.
Six of the last 10 Annie Awards champs have lined up with the Oscars: “Rango” (2012), “Frozen” (2014), “Inside Out” (2016), “Zootopia” (2017), “Coco” (2018) and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse...

Soul and Wolfwalkers were the big winners at the 48th annual Annie Awards for animation, which were doled out in a virtual ceremony tonight. The Disney/Pixar juggernaut strutted away with seven trophies, including Best Feature, while the “relatively small European movie” — as the filmmakers described it — snagged five wins, including Indie Feature.
After they battled it out all night, both will square off for the Academy Award next weekend against Onward, Over the Moon and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon — all three of which went home empty-handed tonight.
On the TV side, big winners included Hilda, which picked up three awards, and Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, which scooped a pair. Big Mouth took the writing prize, and — from a galaxy far, far away — The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars picked up one prize apiece.

“Mank” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on April 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” — plus “Mulan” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Tenet,” which won the fantasy prize at the Adg Awards on Saturday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “The Father,” was not in contention here.
The other Adg winners were the contemporary film “Da 5 Bloods” and the animated film “Soul.”
The Adg Awards were bestowed during a virtual ceremony on April 10. Ryan Murphy was feted with the Cinematic Imagery Award.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Photo: ‘A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’/Netflix One of the surprises of this year’s Oscar nominations came in the Best Animated Feature category. Aside from the obvious choices, the fifth slot was filled by an unlikely pick: ‘A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’. I say unlikely in that the Aardman Animations film debuted as a Netflix Original title a little over a year ago last February, and the Academy tends to favor more recent releases (and it was theatrically released in the UK...almost two years ago). And the months following its release saw more high-profile animated fare come out, like ‘Trolls World Tour’ and ‘The Croods: A New Age’ (which got the nomination in the equivalent category at this year’s Golden Globes). The 2021 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Wednesday, March 24 during a virtual ceremony. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around during its 31-year history, with 21 of their winners going onto prevail at the Academy Awards. That’s thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on seven titles: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami,” with the eighth Oscar nominee – “The Father” – missing from their Top 10.

Netflix amassed 35 Oscar nominations today, which is either the second or third most for a studio in the history of the awards depending on how you splice it.
For the streamer alone, its a record besting the 24 notched last year boosted by Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and 15 noms in 2019 when the studio had Roma as its frontrunner.
In Oscar history, United Artists holds the most noms with 45 for its 1940 slate (lauded in 1941). Following that, it’s Miramax with its 2002 slate at the 2003 Oscars which counted 40 nominations, but that figure comes with an asterisk. Nine of Miramax’s Oscar count that year came from its co-production of the femme drama The Hours which Paramount distributed theatrically. Back those nine away from that 40 count, equals 31 noms, and you could argue that Netflix had the second best Oscar nom showing today since UA in 1940.

The Oscar nominations were announced on Monday morning, March 15, and Gold Derby’s predictions were actually pretty strong. We correctly forecast 19 out of the 20 acting nominees, and all eight Best Picture nominees were among the top 10 in our odds. Today, director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae were recognized with their first Oscar nominations, claiming a slot in the Best Animated Feature category with Disney/Pixar’s Onward.

When the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced Monday, March 15, “Mank” came out on top with a leading 10 bids. But does size really matter considering last year’s nom leader “Joker,” which had 11 bids, still couldn’t beat six-time contender “Parasite” for Best Picture? Although “Mank”‘s haul is impressive, it is missed key nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay, which could hamper its chances to win the top prize.

In Ireland today, Wolfwalkers directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart are celebrating an Oscar nom for Best Animated Feature.
Placing distributor Apple TV+ in that race for the first time, the nom is a first for Moore’s longtime collaborator, Stewart. Moore, meanwhile, has just achieved a hat trick, having now scored Oscar nominations for each film in his ‘Irish Folklore Trilogy,’ which includes his two prior features, Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells.
For both Moore and Stewart, news of the nomination was a relief. “You don’t want to break the streak. I think everyone gave it 110%, all the crew that we worked with—our ‘wolf pack,’ as we call them,” said Moore. “So, I’m so happy that all their hard work has been recognized.”
“It’s a bit surreal,” added Stewart. “We were just praying for good news, and we got it.”

“That was so cool, man. You know, we got to work with such amazing people on this film, and [sound designer] Ren [Klyce] has been a real key contributor,” Docter said. “It’s nice to see him up there; he’s up against himself for Mank.”
While Docter has won two Animated Feature Oscars in the past, for Inside Out and Up, Murray was nominated in 2018 for the animated short Lou. Today’s nomination is her first in the Feature category. “It feels a little bit abstract. I’m trying to take it all in,” the producer said. “It’s very exciting.”

This morning, animation legend Glen Keane was up before the sun and learned that he’d scored his first Oscar nom for Best Animated Feature Film, for his debut feature — Netflix musical fantasy, Over the Moon.
“It’s pretty exciting. I tend to get up around four o’clock anyway, but this was something to get up at four o’clock for,” says the director. “I am just so thankful that [the Academy] recognized the beauty of this movie. It was such a labor of love.”
In conversation with Deadline, Keane shared his feeling that the message of his film is “the right one for this year: healing and love.”
“There’s a moment in the movie where Fei Fei says, ‘I just wish things could go back to the way they were,’ but we don’t go backwards, as we’re finding out,” he added. “We go forward, and it’s...

The time has come to find out the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards. While the 2021 Oscars ceremony was originally set for February 28, the Academy decided to delay the event to late April to accommodate the pandemic upending much of the theatrical release calendar in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars was extended from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal. The Oscars are also allowing films that debuted on streaming or PVOD platforms to compete for Oscars, so long as they originally planned for a theatrical release.

Bong also became the first Korean filmmaker to earn the Best Director prize. Many in the industry viewed the “Parasite” Oscar wins as a watershed moment for the Academy,...
