As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

Eric Appel's "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story," coming to the Roku Channel on November 4, 2022, tells the 20 true story of Alfred Matthew Yankovic, better known to the world as "Weird" Al Yankovic, as he rose to fame "inventing new lyrics for songs that already exist," as characters repeat often. The film covers the events of Yankovic's life from his beleaguered childhood and his first comedic recordings that he mailed into the Dr. Demento Show in the late '70s, to his record contracts and immediate quintuple platinum records in 1983 and 1984.
The film also posits that Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) was hated by his parents for his passion for comedy, and was busted for attending a very illegal polka party where accordions are treated like contraband reefer. In the world of "Weird," Yankovic improvised his song "Another One Rides the Bus" as a challenge at a well-moneyed industry party attended by Wolfman Jack (Jack Black), Elvira,...

Mark Twain said “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” That applies just as well to 1987’s Amazon Women on the Moon, John Landis’s unofficial sequel to Kentucky Fried Movie and the bastard child of Joe Dante and Jon Davison’s The Movie Orgy. Like those back-handed tributes to the disreputable entertainments of our youth, Amazon Women is a smorgasbord of comedy skits, some served up just right and others pretty half-baked—but a judicious use of the remote control and patience rewards; overall the result is a good-natured vacation for the mind with three or four laugh-out-loud vaudeville sequences and a couple of bona-fide short-form classics. The wave of video-documented big live stunts triggered by Felix Baumgartner’s space jump continues. Science Channel and Discovery Channel are teaming for an “Apollo Moment” for the millennial generation, televising a live moon landing. The networks have announced that they will be TV partners for Google Lunar Xprize, a $30 million competition for privately funded teams to land an unmanned craft on the moon by December 31, 2015. The networks will air a miniseries that will follow teams from around the world as they race to fulfill the mission requirements: to land a craft on the surface of the moon, travel 500 meters, and transmit live pictures and video back to Earth. That includes testing, lift-off, and live coverage of the winning lunar landing, which is estimated to take place in 2015. “More than half the world’s population has never had the opportunity to experience a live broadcast from the moon,” said Robert K. Arts network Ovation said during its upfront presentation today that it will premiere nine new original series this summer and fall. It also unveiled 16 more series in the works for 2014. The ramp-up will see 236 hours of original fare produced this year compared with 46 hours in 2012, which was double the amount in 2011. With this seismic shift in our programming focus, we are making the leap to become a full-service arts network — America’s only arts network”, said Robert Weiss, Ovation’s Chief Creative Officer, who made the announcements today. The majority of programming will be produced at the network’s new Ovation Studios in Santa Monica. The network also revealed a new tagline: Art Everywhere. Exclusive: Ovation laid off employees in its Santa Monica office Friday, a month after Time Warner dumped the arts channel from its lineup citing poor ratings and a less-than-compelling programming slate. Reps would not confirm the size of today’s staff cuts but sources say layoffs hit 20-25 employees — almost a fourth of its 95-person corps. Chief Creative Officer Robert Weiss confirms to Deadline that the layoffs are the first wave of a company-wide reorganization that will affect its La, Chicago, and New York offices as Ovation whittles its resources in order to relaunch stronger programming initiatives in 2013 and 2014, a must if the six-year-old cable arts outpost is going to survive the Time Warner blow-off. Ovation’s 2012 slate was light on original programming (A Chance To Dance, Motor City Rising) but Weiss says that razing the ground will allow Ovation to strategically rebuild its ranks, with promotions and key senior hires to come.

London, Jan 30: A stripper-turned-film maker has caught the attention of women viewers by putting a softer spin on typical pornography with a new genre of Edwardian-style romance porn.
According to ABC News, Nica Noelle, who uses seductive glances, story-lines of repressed passions, and softer shots of lovemaking, is being credited with turning "typical porn into pure art," the Daily Mail reported.
And like her latest erotic film, 'My Mother's Lover', with its padded-out narratives and deeper sense of emotion, is opening up pornography for a wider female market - one that has eluded male pornographers for decades.
Robert Weiss, founding director of The Sexual Recovery Institute, an outpatient sexual addiction treatment.

If ever a movie was made for the small screen, it was Amazon Women on the Moon. A sketch-comedy compilation spearheaded by John Landis and directed by not only him but also Joe Dante, Carl Gottlieb, Peter Horton and Robert K. Weiss, the 1987 film is a loving ode to the cinema's main rival, television, which it mocks with ribald affection. As a parody, it's a scattershot effort, lurching between its 21 skits, and yet courtesy of its connective tissue—a spoof of a 1950s sci-fi movie—it manages to capture an overarching sense of the silliness of so much late-night television. Be it infomercials, true-life reality TV shows, romantic dramas, or soft-core porn, no subject is safe, though it's a late sketch directed by Weiss dubbed "Video Pirates" that truly encapsulates the anarchic spirit of the endeavor. Several services were held around the area, including one at the town hall. At the St. Rose of Lima Church people packed the pews and spilled out the doors. While hymns and prayers could be heard from inside, outside people cried, hugged, and even laughed at times. Some participated in a prayer circle, silently holding hands before beginning to sing songs including "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night.

Produced before the onslaught of ‘Genre Movie’ spoof films, Scary Movie 3.5 combines it’s own (albeit light) plot with a plethora of episodic funny moments. Stupid comedy may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but truly nothing is proved sacred here, with the film spoofing virtually everything that had any popularity in the early 2000′s. Targeting everything from pop culture to blockbuster movies, Scary Movie 3.5 spoofs Signs, 8 Mile, The Ring, The Matrix, The Hours and The Sixth Sense which all have it ripped out of them, but the film remains cohesive in it’s own right.
All-star cameos also add to the comedy, including fantastic moments from Pamela Anderson, Jenny McCarthy, Denise Richards, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Queen Latifah and Leslie Nielson. However,...

The passing of Leslie Nielsen last year was a very sad day indeed. While many actors have tried to nail the same style of deadpan comic delivery, none have managed it quite as well as Nielsen. It’s often said that his defining performance is that of Dr.Rumack in Airplane! – of which he’ll always be remembered for a particular line involving a very serious Shirley. But for me, the role of Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun is the best performance by the comedy star.
The partnership of David & Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams – also known as Zaz – resulted in some of the greatest comedy movies of the 1980’s. Their first big screen production, John Landis’ Kentucky Fried Movie is an early example of their trademark zany humour – mixing crude sight gags with satire (most notably Bruce Lee films with a...

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...

Now, the phenomenon that is The Kentucky Fried Movie is back, this time as a special two-disc DVD release featuring a host of extras, including a feature-length interview with its co-creators, the Zucker brothers, plus brand new artwork by artist Graham Humphreys (The Evil Dead; A Nightmare on Elm Street). No living organism, be they man, beast, or plant, should ever be asked to watch this. Comedy is subjective; everyone has a different range of humor that elicits laughter. That said, this still requires the presence of comedy in some shape or form. Some films achieve it unintentionally, like anything starring Steven Seagall or super-low budget horror films with utterly absurd premises.
