Linen bedding is a prime example that luxury doesn’t always mean pristine and high maintenance. Known for its relaxed, naturally crinkled nature, linen bedding just feels effortless, and that gives it an element of elegance that lifts it beyond your standard set of bed sheets. In most cases you needn’t worry about ironing or pressing it like you do egyptian cotton sheets, meaning you can just throw your sheets and duvet cover on the bed and take pleasure in how good they look in their natural state.
Looking great and being good for you and your sleep isn't even where linen bedding’s perks and advantages stop though. It’s also one of the most comfortable materials to sleep on. Sure, buy from the wrong brand and you’ll find it just feels scratchy, uncomfortable and full of creases, but opt for some of the best linen bedding and you’ll find it to feel softer and silkier than cotton. Just make sure to pair it with one of the best mattresses and the best bed frames.

How we chose the best linen bedding: GQ's review process
The team: Here at GQ, all of our Interiors guides are edited by Daphne Bugler, one of the team’s Senior Commerce Writers who has been working in the interiors space for the past three years and at GQ since 2019. Thanks to this time in the industry, she works closely with experts and is very well versed in what does, and doesn’t, make a good set of sheets. Having attended plenty of trade shows, and meeting regularly with most of the brands in this guide, we also have an in-depth insight into which collections and stores are worth shopping from in 2024.
The criteria: Linen bedding has some great benefits when you buy it from the right place; it's soft, it's easy to care for, and most importantly it is one of the best materials for temperature regulation. In order to find the best linen bedding for you to shop this year, we were looking for duvet covers and pillowcases that ticked all of these boxes, while also aiming to find linen that was actually soft, rather than scratchier and less comfortable to sleep with. And of course, aesthetic played a big part in our decision making too. Below, you'll find a range of colours and designs, all of which are set to elevate your bedroom set-up for the new year.
Is linen bedding a good idea?
Did we mention the fact you don’t need to iron it? That aside, there’s more to linen bedding than a high-end Instagram fad. Highly breathable, sustainable and moisture-wicking, these linen sheet sets are a great choice for hot sleepers in the summer but can be used year-round for better temperature regulation and airflow. Linen is fully biodegradable once it needs replacing and looks best when simply thrown back onto the bed after washing and drying with zero extra faff. If you prefer a pristine, flat-as-a-pancake duvet or very light bedding, however, you’d be better off choosing cotton sheets instead as linen tends to feel a touch heavier and will never look perfectly smooth.
Which bedding is best for summer?
For the warmer summer months, you'll want to make sure you find bedding which will keep you from overheating. While cotton is a good option, its linen's lightweight, breathable and cool-to-the-touch feel that has made it our favourite summer bedding solution. And even better, linen's naturally temperature-regulating properties mean it will work just as well to keep you warm in the winter too, so you won't need to worry about investing in a new bedding set for each season. Throw in the many further benefits of linen bedding (antimicrobial, temperature regulating, durable) and it's easily the best option.
What should I look for when buying linen bedding?
Be sure to get what you pay for. For maximum benefits, check the bedding is made from 100 per cent linen and look carefully at its weave and thread count. A very loose weave means the sheets won’t last as long and it’s worth paying extra for a top-quality finish. Don’t be put off if the sheets feel crisp to touch at first either, they will soften considerably once they’re washed. It’s also worth looking for pre-washed and pre-shrunk bedding to minimise future shrinkage and give you a head start on the snuggle factor.
