The NWSL and Liga MX Femenil will have a summer tournament!

The newly minted summer cup is set to begin on July 19th.

The NWSL announced today that in partnership with Liga MX Femenil, there will be a summer tournament featuring all NWSL teams and the top six teams from Liga MX Femenil from last year.

The inter-league tournament is set to start on July 19th and the championship match is set to take place on the weekend of October 25th-27th.

The tournament, named the NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup, will be the first of its kind, but neither league has indicated if this will be an annual competition or a one off. The teams set to feature in the tournament are the NWSL teams plus Tigres UANL, Club América, Chivas de Guadalajara, Rayadas de Monterrey, Pachuca and Tijuana.

The summer tournament set up is as follows:

  • 30 Group stage matches (starting on July 19th), featuring five groups with four groups including three NWSL teams and one Liga MX Femenil team, and one froup with two from each league. Each team will play three matches within the group.
  • A semi-final round (around the week of August 4th)
  • Championsip match (October 25th-27th)

Speaking in the official release, NWSL Commissioner Jessia Berman noted that this was a “historic milestone for women’s soccer in North America,” and that the NWSL was “excited to partner with LIGA MX Femenil to create additional competitive opportunities for our athletes, unlock new rivalries, tap into our collective fanbases and continue our shared mission of raising the value, visibility and global standard of our sport.”

Also in the same release, Liga MX Femenil Director Mariana Gutierrez stated that this tournament was “a great achievement for women’s football in our region and around the world.”
