Emma Hayes set to leave Chelsea and possibly become the next USWNT manager

Minutes after Chelsea’s emphatic win over Aston Villa in the FA WSL, the club announced that current manager Emma Hayes would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The club statement stated that Hayes would leave the club to “pursue a new opportunity outside of the WSL and club football.”.

Not too long after that statement was dropped, both Joseph Lowery of Backheeled and Jeff Kassouf of the Equalizer announced that sources close to the USWNT had informed them that Emma Hayes would be the new manager once Chelsea’s club season ended.

When names were being bandied about recently over who would take over the USWNT job, Hayes was never brought up as a serious consideration due to her seemingly strong ties to Chelsea. In fact, the three front runners seemed to be Tony Gustavsson (currently with Australia), Laura Harvey (currently with OL Reign) and Joe Montemurro (currently with Juventus).

Now, it seems as though Emma Hayes will be in charge of the USWNT going into the Olympics and further on.

Hayes has enjoyed success with Chelsea from the minute she began with the club and it seems as though USSF feel as though she can bring that success to the national team. After the poor showings at the Tokyo Olympics and the recent World Cup, the USWNT needed a change in perspective and bringing in someone like Hayes, who’s essentially an outsider to the system in North America, could be the change needed to return the USWNT back to its former glory.
