on the Rebels Tall Fescue Grass Seed Blend product packaging.
Product Description
Tall fescue is valued for its adaptability to a wide range of climates and its tolerances for cold, heat, drought and shade. Ideal for the northern and transition zones, Pennington The Rebels Tall Fescue has represented the finest quality of tall fescue on the market for decades. This grass is tough. It has thick, deep, and dense roots that result in excellent drought and traffic tolerance. In areas of your yard that receive 4 to 6 hours of sunlight, plant it in early spring or early fall and see results in 8 to 16 days. This 7-pound bag covers up to 1,750 square feet for overseeding an existing lawn and 850 square feet for starting a new lawn from scratch. The Roots of the Rebels Brand dates back to 1979, when turf researchers at Rutgers University released a revolutionary new grass. Known as 'Rebel,' it was the very first example of what's now known as turf-type tall fescue. Compared to traditional tall fescue, Rebel offered lower growth, finer texture, darker color and denser turf — plus the drought tolerance that makes turf-type tall fescue a homeowner favorite. Generations later, with up to 40 percent more roots than ordinary grass, The Rebels Brand Extended Root seed varieties represent the best turf-type tall fescue on the market. With roots like those, it's only natural that The Rebels Brand carries the Pennington name.

When you till area that has maybe 10 weeds, what the tiller is doing is spreading over 1000 and planting the weeds seeds everywhere. Tilling is for breaking dirt up, when you till a weed you deposit seeds beneath the soil giving them a rich environment to grow. That is why you end up with more weeds than you ever had before. Weeds seeds and fescue seeds look very different I tried my hardest to find any other seed In my bag with no luck. I highly suggest spraying your favorite killer on the area rake the dead away, then sow your seeds. If your soil must be tilled, spray your favorite killer, then till, then wait a week for weeds to surface then spray again… then sow your seeds. I do not leave reviews I do not work for rebels grass seeds, I’m just here to tell you not everyone has a green thumb but anyones thumb can turn green. Also keep your seeds wet. All seeds for any plant need to germinate is water.. and warmth….no light ,no soil, they germinate within 4 days with no sun or soil inside a wet napkin ( try it). As you can see I had very good results these pics are the second cut. 150$ amazon lawnboy brand mower with a Matt I rigged behind to drag and lay the fescue down as I cut.
Good luck, this is a real review that will make your grass growing experience better with any seeds I’m not advocating for any brand, this is a seed planting lesson. I purchased another tall fescue to reseed, my lawn is beautiful but if u zoom in u can see one or 2 spots that need the reseed as expected with fescue on a new seeded lawn, this tall fescue does not spread like burm grass.

Could not be happier. Easy to broadcast by hand, germinates in just over a week and then grows strongly into a gorgeous lawn in about a month (here in the Central Valley of California in April).
I cultivated the soil to about 6" prior to planting, added some organic lawn food at the same time as I planted the seed, and then covered the seed in half an inch of peat moss and watered it daily on days when it did not rain. Excellent results. Easy process.
It’s not really the cost that bothers me about the product, it’s all the effort that has gone into growing grass with no results.
I live in Chicago suburbs where it is not very hot, and the grass has been planted in partial shade. I see no reason why grass seed shouldn’t grow- maybe that’s why it’s so cheap on Amazon.
Another annoying thing about this seed, is that Pennington coats it with A LOT of this powdered green dye. It’s strong. Anything that touches it or brushes by it is turned green. Reminds me of how golf courses dye the short grass on the greens areas with a strong green/blue dye. I’m not sure the reason they add the dye on the seed, but perhaps it’s adding to the growth inhibition. Idk. But I def won’t be buying this stuff again even if other seed costs twice as much!
NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
Zero germination. Not a single seed germinated at all. Cracked open a few seeds and there's nothing in them. Just empty husks.
Really glad I did a test area and didn't invest much money. It's clear I have to spend more for a better product.
I've been using it for years.
