  • The Great Flood begins in southern Poland.
  • Mayo Clinic researchers warn that the dieting drug "fen-phen" can cause severe heart and lung damage.
  • NATO invites the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland to join the alliance in 1999.
  • The remains of Che Guevara are returned to Cuba for burial, alongside some of his comrades. Guevara and his comrades were executed on 9 October 1967 in Bolivia.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains 63.17 to close at 8,038.88. It is the Dow's first close above 8,000. The Dow has doubled its value in 30 months.
  • On her 200th birthday, the fully restored USS Constitution (aka "Old Ironsides") sets sail for the first time in 116 years.
  • The first genetically modified 3 parent baby is born.[1]
  • K. R. Narayanan is sworn in as India's 10th president and the first member of the Dalit caste to hold this office.
